  • Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile: Zac Efron, Lily Collins, Joe Berlinger, Haley Joel Osment, Angela Sarafyan Interview
One of the many films to world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was director Joe Berlinger’s true crime drama Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The buzzed about film stars Zac Efron as the serial killer Ted Bundy and approaches Bundy’s story from the point of view of his longtime live-in girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins, during the years that he hid his crimes from her. John Malkovich stars as Judge Edward Cowart, who presided over the serial killer’s 1979 trial, and Jim Parsons plays Larry Simpson, the lead prosecutor in Bundy’s trial and the man who eventually put the grotesque serial killer behind bars. In addition, Kaya Scodelario looks like she’s disappeared in her role of Bundy’s mysterious ex-wife Carol Anne Boone. The film, written by Michael Werwie, also stars Haley Joel Osment.
Shortly before the world premiere I got to sit down with Zac Efron, Lily Collins, Haley Joel Osment, Angela Sarafyan and director Joe Berlinger at the Collider Studio located in the Kia Supper Suite in Park City. During the wide-ranging conversation, they talked about being able to premiere at Sundance, if Zac Efron debated taking on the role of a serial killer, balancing the line between fact and fiction when making a film based on a true story, which scenes they were nervous to shoot before filming began, how the film changed in the editing room, and more.

Some people doubt Zac will do this role justice. I do feel he's a good actor though - for example, watch him in 17 Again. He was really amazing in it.

No one can duplicate the Bundy eyes. Also, Zac looks like a young man; Bundy had lines in his forehead and wrinkles, and all that. Bundy looked more like a full grown man.

I think Zac’s casting as Ted was spot on. In the 70’s, many young women fell under Ted’s spell because of his charm, and used his looks to his advantage. They all rooted for him and actually believed he was innocent. Joe Berlinger found a well-known actor in our modern day that mirrored the same idea. Someone with good looks and a charming personality to manipulate the audience. It worked, as I found myself questioning his innocence the entire movie.

@@babykay96x he doesn’t look like Bundy. Ted looked a little like everyone, yet no one looks like Ted. You’re talking in broad generalities about how they’re both good-looking and can pull women, and stuff like that. Efron had to be made up to look like Bundy. Corin Nemic looked more like Bundy when he played him. Also efron looks ethnic and Ted didn’t.

@@jgonzales912 In that sense, agreed. No one can compare to Bundy.

@@babykay96x if you have not seen Charlie St. Cloud, I definitely recommend that movie. It got bad reviews, but I absolutely loved it and Efron in it. Just thought I’d mention. Always looking to advocate it, basically. Lol.
