Should You Buy A Car With High Mileage

- In this video, I answer a simple car question: should you buy a car with high mileage. If you are looking at buying a car with 150,000 miles, then there are a few things that you should be aware of before you purchase the car. Firstly, you should do a full inspection of the car because a car with high mileage can have some serious problems (or not). Secondly, you should think about how long you want the car to last. I go over those two factors, as well as many more, in the video!

I watched this video about a year ago and decided to get a Toyota Camry 2012 215,000 miles. That is the best decision I made, I am still enjoying this car like it's new without depreciation and the best car ever.
If I buy a car with high mileage, it's going to be a Toyota.
@@GoLongAmerica I’m buying a 2002 Toyota Camry tomorrow for $4k with 220k miles. Car looks great on inside and outside. I bet it’ll last to 300k+ miles easy
@@Kosherstyles24 I'm thinking about buying a 2019 Rav4 hybrid with 105k miles. My strategy for finding a good high mileage vehicle is to look at the carfax/history report. If the previous owner did every required oil change, then it's a car worth buying. If they can't show me that, then I wouldn't buy it.
I paid $15000 for a 1999 suzuki swift with 400000 km. sure it's a bit rusted, and the engine takes 10 or 20 cranks to get kicking, and the exhaust manifold isn't connected so it sounds like a monster truck, and the brakes take a good kicking to stop, and the windshield is cracked, and the tires are bald, and the suspension bounces like crazy, and the roof leaks, and the body is covered in dents and rust but it turns heads I'll tell ya. money well spent.
@@chrishayes5755 I bet girls start ripping their panties off when they see you in that thing.
Well said. Most cars can lost well over 300k miles if well taken care of. It's only after 150k miles, 'small' things like the seat motor going out but that can be easily repaired.
I suggest when buying any used car, go take it in for a pre purchase inspection
James Nguyen how do u do this
Sossa Valencia I think you can just get a mechanic to check it out
Hey this guy makes a lot of sense and brings a new edge to the boring stuff we all been used to he is very enthusiastic.
I'm a dealer and a mechanic and sold & drove about 3000 in the course of 25 years & 90% of people are wrong because I 100% will chose a good running high mile car because you are saving money in case it breaks down. And your low mile low quality car can still break down after you already overpay for it. MY ADVISE : buy a good condition quality high mile car (eg.toyota honda) over any low mile NISSAN, CHEVY, FORD, DODGE, KIA and many others cars (exept chevy and other trucks and older nissan models prior 2000
High mileage Porshe though?
Thank you for this great advise!👌🏽
I've got a 2007 Nissan quest with 181,000 miles on it and runs like a champ.
lonestr1 give it about 20k more miles and see if it still does
Never seen a Nissan with 200k
Ive got myself 92 celica
With 206000 miles
lonestr1 I got rid of my 07 Ford 500 187k
Now I got a 2011 Ford Taurus 102k on it.
What about a dogged that has 206k should I buy
I have done plenty of research and there's plenty of it out there. The notion that an engine can only last so many miles may be a myth unless we're talking over 500K miles. According to experts, there are 2 things that will kill an engine: oil starvation and overheating.
I/we have owned a few high mileage units around here:
VW Jetta with over 300K miles then the transmission kicked the bucket.
VW Passat TDI with a bit over 300K miles an accident put that car out of its misery, our insurance gave us $8500.00 pay off, according to the insurance adjuster the car had a lot of life left.
Currently, own BMW 528e with 280K miles still running like a champ, BMW e38 with 250K miles still going strong and to top it off they run, feel and look pretty nice.
My Chevy Malibu is a 2004 and has 156k miles. Is that decent for it's age and how much longer do you think it could last. ? I take proper maintenance on it. You sound good at cars that's why I'm asking. Thanks
Well said. Not many people know about what you said.
I don’t believe It

if you buy a high mileage car just buy it at a cheap enought price to plan on making some large repairs ( like having a car emergency fund in place so you are ready with repair funds $$$
when it happens)

You can buy a hell cat, trailer the thing to a track and beat the hell out of it, and trailer it back home for a year straight. Its gonna have super low mileage, but it's been through the ringer lol.
On the other hand, you can buy the same car, and baby the thing to 200k miles. Other than wear items (tires, brakes, belts, fluids etc), the high mileage car will be in much better condition provided there is no rust.
Basically, you can not tell the condition of a car by mileage alone. If you assuming everything with low mileage is perfect, you are in for a hell of a surprise down the road.
High mileage is not a reliable predictor for how long a car is going to last if you ask me. Cars with high mileage can have spend most of its miles on the highway. A car with only half the mileage could be used in the city for stop, start driving. A better predictor could be the wear and tear of the car. For example the steering wheel is that worn or not. The door rubbers, chairs, safety belts, all that indicate lots of start and stopping.
CitroenRasp dideveed what is considered to be high mileage?
so wtf is you saying
@@micaellezama2832 over 120,000 miles
I agree. You need to look at all the evidence the car has to determine if the mileage is mostly city or highway.
If it’s a well taken care of Toyota or Honda ,it’s great to get a high mileage car. If it’s a gm,Ford, bmw,Volvo,Mercedes ,or Kia ,don’t waste your money.
Robert Green Agree, if you get a Honda, get manual trans, their auto are a bit weak. But these two brands are the toughest, not sure about the new ones.
Robert Green what about Subaru
What about chevy?
What about Hyundai, Mazda or Suzuki ?
Robert Green what about an Nissan?
Ever since i turned 16 ive thought of you as my droving instructor to a degree haha hope youre doing well man finally getting my own car at 20 and im really excited!
Best advice I would say is getting a credit card and saving up unless parents are helping and cosigning
200k milages aint that much tho. Not imo, im in Germany and ive seen cars with way over 500k miles. Even got myself a Hyundai i30 CRDI 2013 stock engine and clutch with 380k miles, runs like a champ and been daily driving it for almost 2 years without any problems. Good maintenance with QUALITY oil and youre good. Dont blame the car blame bad owners
Well said thanks.
I took a gamble. I bought a Chevy Silverado 1500 with 214,000 miles on it. The owner got a rebuilt transmission in it. I have a 3 year or 100,000 mile warranty on the transmission. It just passed inspection. I also paid for an oil change and flush. It runs good. Thinking about forking out money for a tune up as well. My work commute is fairly close. Probably roughly 4 miles round trip so that helps. Plus I bought it to haul some mulch and soil for our garden. I am happy with this buy so far! Wish me luck!
The thing is if you buy high mileage car, most of its main components may have well already been changed and that is the reason why it's high mileage!
That's what I want to know... Is there a sweet spot.
This dude got knowledge but his intro “hey everybodyyyyyyyy” it’s soo annoying

Well one most people don't have a mechanic on a leash to go car shopping with them .2. Most private seller know what condition their vehicle are in and its secret problem are. Which a non mechanic shopper doesn't notice unless it's obvious...Most private sellers will NOT let a mechanic shop check their vehicles out because of that reason..More expensive vehicles over $10k might let a mechanic look at it..
Underrated comment. Thanks for sharing
If it’s been maintained properly then mileage doesn’t matter, can also get a great deal if it has over 200k on the clock, proof that I have: my moms 87 cavalier with 208k miles bought new by grandparents (rusted away years ago) my brothers 1998 ram 1500 240k miles two owner original engine second trans rebuild lol

Well I bought a high millage Mitsubishi eclipse 2001 with almost 250000 miles. It was at an auction near the bordear with Tijuana where I was staying so I neede a car for Easy moving and pragmatism and wasnt looking for a beauty however I liked It a lot at first sight!!!! While nobody at the placer seemed to carne much for It. Probably because of such millage!! But I did and got It. From then on I drove It a lot back and forth in Tijuana and in san Diego, I went to las Vegas twice, to LA, I drove It through Baja California with its paradisiac landscapes and enigmatic deserts It was reliable and he become my unseparable friend!!
When i prayed first, I got great use out of vehicles 😊; when i rushed into one...😢 ...i am 73 and have had maybe 15 vehicles over the life.
I bought a 2005 jeep liberty at 51,000 miles it lasted about 12 years. I had to repair slot of leaks. The heater didn't work slot of times if it wasn't one thing it was another. In the end the head basket went. It was at 193,000 by then.
best cars that are high mileage are ex police or a sales reps that has been long distance journeys, not thrashing it over short trips.
IMHO, the most important thing to do when choosing a high mileage car, is to check the history report and check that all maintenance and oil changes have been done. If there no maintenance record, I wouldn't buy the car.

What if you buy a car with high mileage, and change the car engine, is it not better?
waiting for the reply to this as well
What if someone just wanted a weekend car or something that isn’t a daily driver ? Then you can maybe stretch it out more than a few years. It depends how long the person intends to keep it I suppose.
i like how you answered your own question lol
Just take the car for a test drive , see if is not leaking any type of fluis , check the suspension, and that everything works, when you test drive the var you car feel if the motor has power if the transmission shift smooth etc, look the engine bay if parts look good or they are old ask for what maintenance has been done to the car since the person has owned , cars are always a money lost , id you get it brand new you wont have issues but the car is devaluing wvey single year , and you are paying hundres of dollars every monthe for the car payment plus full cover insurance, and eventually is gonna reach 100k miles and you have paid off the var it be the time to start putting money in maintenance, or sell it and get a brand new car and start with a new car payments ,
It all depends on how much of that mileage is highway. A former salesman car is good, a former police. Getting a used car from a good car rental place in a place where you have to drive a long distance from point A to point B maybe also be a good idea.
My dad’s 1998 Ford Ranger just hit 226,000 and it’s still going.

My friend bought a used 2013 Honda civic from dealership with 98,000 miles on it for $10,000 and paid $800 for registration and taxes. Since then he is spending money on the car every month. He changed engine mounts one month, next month he changed VTEC solenoid, MAP sensor, cleaned MAF sensor. next month he said transmission not shifting smooth he changed transmission oil 3 times 3 quarts every time, transmission solenoids, then he changed tensioner, serpentine belt, then water pump, Changed brakes, rotors, he did valve adjustments, now he said timing jumped by 2 teeth. HELL of a time. Waste of time. Buy brand new, use for 90000 miles sell and get new one. No used car.

The honesty truth in my opinion is, "more maintenance or less maintenance at first!"
Be that new car or used car with high miles, even over 200k.
If you buy used cars, are you willing to keep paying more for maintenances, even major repairs.
In my eyes, cars are not a good investment return.
Unless, it's really part of your business or work expense, even though is meant to get you from point A to point B. That's just how I see it, though.
Either way, whether your saving a few bucks or not, people should always look at cars in many different point of view, too. I feel.
If you buy it cheap enough, its ok if it breaks and if it does not ....
