I have been to both and enjoyed both for different reasons.
DR= if you're on a budgeet. All inclusive resort, beautiful beaches, best for R&R. Be very mindful of your surroundings in the DR. I got approached at the airport. A coworker of mine had rented a jeep with his boys and were pulled over by a cop for money. I didn't really feel safe leaving the resort area. However, it was a much needed rejuvenating vacation. Also, it's a lot cheaper.
PR=if you have a bigger budget, choose this island. DR was a much needed relaxing, beautiful vacation. However, PR was memories made. Renting a car is a must! It's easier to get around the island since it's smaller and has better roads. Never felt unsafe. The amount of fun we had. Both islands have greatnightlife, but i prefer to dance Salsa, so i liked PR's night life more. Both have beautiful beaches, but Puerto Rico had crazy waves when i went in March 😂😂😂 water sports are definitely better in PR due to it being the surfing capitol of the caribbean. The water slides, cliff jumps, and tarzan swing were exhilarating in ElYunque rainforest. I went swimming in the bio bay at Lajas, and it is probably the most magical experience of my life.
Overall, it depends on what type of vacation you want. Both have beautiful beaches and nightlife. I say go to both when you can. But if you have to choose. R&R and all inclusive resort packages, then choose DR. Remember, Punta Cana is not the only resort area. I enjoyed puerto plata and Samana more. However, Punta Cana had the better beaches.
If you're looking more for history, culture, and adventure , I had so much fun, and it was really a life changing experience. From the beaches, exploring nature caves and ruins. The jibaros told me stories with songs. There was also a lot less prejudice in PR when it comes to skin color and class. Yes, PR is a US territory, so your money and phone will work there. Makes driving around way easier. However, believe me when i say it's another country when you arrive. The puerto ricans are very alive with their culture.
Either way, you are going to enjoy both Latino Caribbean beauties. While i enjoyed PR more, i will be going to DR next time because im just looking to relax for a 4 day weekend.

I've been to each island and both are great. Many similarities but also lots of differences. I'd say the main advantage to Puerto Rico is that U.S. travelers don't need a passport and the currency is the same. English is also widely spoken in PR as it is a U.S. territory. However, if you're a budget traveler I think the DR is better. Most tourists will find that their money can stretch a little longer in the DR, Puerto Rico is one of the more expensive islands in the Caribbean in regards to hotels & lodging. Punta Cana is a great place for relaxation but Santo Domingo has far better nightlife. Dining options are also more plentiful and diverse in the capital city, you can find a little bit of everything. There is lots of European and international influence in the cuisine, you can find MANY quality restaurants that offer Italian, French, Spanish, Oriental as well traditional local dishes. I would say the DR is best overall in terms of variety & travel options, there is something for virtually everyone and any kind of budget. It's a highly popular destination for millionaires and celebrities who seek luxury, as well as common travelers with a smaller budget.

In Dominican Republic I still have a lot to explore this time I'm going to Las terrenas, since I'm from the north I tend to go to Puerto Plata a lot to hop over to Santiago and visit my family. I have been to Santo Domingo and Bavaro I will like to visit Santo Domingo again in the far futuro.

I have been to both island and both are great, but the better of the two for me is Puerto rico, everything is so much easy in the sense of internet, and getting around the island. In Dominican Republic you have to purchase a small wifi or internet square box to get internet and if you go over the megabytes that it gives you have to pay for more. While in PR internet around the island is free. Lechoneras in PR are way more organized and the food for me is way much delicious than DR. PR night life is great fun although in DR they party non stop and i love that. Also in terms of safety Puerto Rico is more safe than Dominican republic. Yes it's true that Puerto Rico is way more expensive than Dominican republic but it also lives up to it's name la island del encanto.

If you want a cheap vacation in the Caribbean the option is DR but if you really want to enjoy a good vacation in the Caribbean the best option in every way the best option is PR. The island of Puerto Rico has a magical charm in its sunsets that is wonderful and you only feel it being there. As a Floridian, I've been to Puerto Rico once in 2008 and although most claimed to speak both English and Spanish, they couldn't understand me well in neither language, probably because of my accent being different, so it seemed like a huge language barrier that I had in Puerto Rico. However more recently, I've been to Mexico at least a few times in 2019, 2020, 2021, and this year and actually, I've felt like I really don't have any language barrier in Mexico because although most people in Mexico don't know any English, they do however understand me well in Spanish. Admittingy, I didn't know as much Spanish back in 2008 as I do now. Also in my opinion, I've also found that the people in Mexico are generally more friendlier than in PR. If course one advantage that Puerto Rico has over Mexico if that PR doesn't require a passport nor does it require you to go through immigration if you are a US citizen while Mexico dose since PR is a US territory and Mexico is a whole other country. Also in PR, you don't have to convert currency while in Mexico you do.

Puerto Rico is better economically. That means it's very hard to get complications in anything regarding your trip. It is like vacationing in Florida. You can go wherever , it is Americanized culturally. There is a pub or a bar in every corner of the island. There are typical food in every corner of the island. And there are also Walmarts kamarts Sears best buys , Chili's Applebee's MacDonald's and bks Sam's and Costco's on every corner. A Walgreens and CVS on every corner. it's the most Americanized carribean island you can find that still has their own carribean flavor.
The only problem with Puerto Rico (Wich is the reason locals travel elsewhere) it does not have that all inclusive package resorts. Yes the resorts are more luxury, and food is very inexpensive all around the island so that might be the reason all inclusives are not needed.
Drinks are cheap at ever corner bar or pub, the most expensive restaurants are still cheap in restaurants prices standards. Think Chili's prices to their top restaurants.
The only thing expensive in Puerto Rico are hotels, other than that it's all budget.
If you go to Puerto Rico, go and eat at "Raíces" it's the most Puerto Rican food sit down restaurant you could find. But their menus items can be found all over the island in every corner for half the price.. just go to the local cafeteria or bakery at lunch hours, you will get and entire Puerto Rican meal for 7 buck tops.

The prices here can change dramatically depending on where you are ... the excursions have to be negotiated until you have a better offer. If you go out of the hotel you will realize that it is not as cheap as you think ... get your money from wherever you come from...ATM charges there are ridiculous. The pools are closed at 6 pm in the resorts and they do not recommend leaving after sunset... it is advisable to take a package and continue with the hotel plans .... if you like a pool, beach, food and drink in the same place ... it is your destination ... Puerto Rico is a bit different as you can move independently day and night and do different antivities yourself...create or not I think it seemed like the cheapest food in P.R. and better and many more things and places to go... both are beautiful and unique beaches
