- After John Tavares opted to sign with the Maple Leafs instead of remaining an Islander, a matchup between Toronto and New York on Thursday, February 28th, 2019 became must watch TV. It would be Tavares' return to New York.

The team honored his wishes at the trade deadline, then he quickly ran to Toronto leaving the Isles with what could have been picks and or players for their best asset.

The isles offered him the max contract leading up to when he became a UFA. Plus isles fans don’t blame him for leave. They blame his for the way he went about it.
The reason people are upset is because he told management not to trade him at the deadline and get a possibly franchise changing hall because he wanted to finish his career as an Isle. He then signed a contract with the Leafs that was lower than what the Isles offered him. He pretty much tanked their rebuild and forced them to sign a lot of players that in the short term makes them competitive but in the long term could anchor them dramatically, especially with the blooming inflation of contracts nowadays

As to the point of management, while that may be true JT had a massive press conference where he told the fans that he wanted to stay and he had plans to be an Isle for life. And as for the cup, the Sharks are a better team than the leafs and he would have had a better shot with them, so that argument doesn't hold water anyways. Just as he has every right to go where he wants the fans have every right to boo him for lying to them.
Tavares gave the islanders the best 9 years of his nhl career and he was thanked with bad defense worse goaltending and the final straw was doing NOTHING at the trade deadline last year. If he stayed he would have to have his head examined.
I agree Tavares owed that franchise nothing but they did nothing at the deadline bc he asked to not be traded (hence why they’re chanting “please don’t trade me). He then leaves in the off-season and the Isles get nothing from it. That last bit is the part I understand is hard swallow and kind of a dick move on his part. To tell you the truth I saw that at the game and agree it's sad when that happened. But, the tribute video was about 1 minute and 30 seconds or so long, so I couldn't include the whole thing in this video. If JT said he wanted to be traded you would be mad at him. If JT said he wanted to test the waters of free agency you would be mad at him. After that, I have no sympathy nor will I for islanders fans anymore. They've made it clear they don't need anyone. They have a number one team in metro, surly they won't be knocked out of the playoffs. The cup is theirs. It's the way that he left and the fact that he cost them draft picks that has the fans so mad. hey 'ya'll' it wasn't for 'making a mistake' it was for putting no effort at all in to the game. Gardiner is a joke of a player that was fucking -5 in game 7 against boston. It's like he doesnt try. He so so many mistakes every fucking game that's insulting. And for a franchise that has been so unsuccessful for so long in yet STILL charges by far the most money for tickets, merchandise, tv broadcasts, etc. fans have every right to complain. You don't have to spend 500 dollars for a ticket to a home game just to see your team lose for the 50th year in a row.

This isn't a common occurrence, yet the reason this happened is because Tavares claimed he wanted to stay and play for the Islanders, but instead of allowing himself to be traded (A big part of this falls on the teams management as well, who were all sacked the same Summer anyway) he played out his contract and left the team with nothing.
Usually when a player of his calibre reaches the end of his contract before becoming an Unrestricted Free Agent they either re sign with the club or accept a trade to allow their club some compensation usually in the way of future considerations such as draft picks and young prospects.
I realise this comment is a bit late, but I hope this helps you better understand why he was boo'd instead of cheered.

They booed him because, all season he lied and made promises that he didn’t keep. If he was honest about wanting to leave and play for his home town than every single islanders fan would want him to leave and be happy. But when he came out and said he wanted to stay and win the cup with the isles, but then proceeded to leave, that’s what really pissed them off.
He pretty much gave his everything to the Islanders, almost a point per game, Charity work... and they boo him. Classless. I hope the Islanders get smoked in the first round.

Right Side Up okay. Say after this season, Toronto starts missing playoffs. They are struggling. They are looking for players to help them, and nobody seems to want to be traded. Then all of a sudden, Auston Mathews decides to leave. Toronto doesn’t get any thing for him, making a bad team even worse. Wouldn’t that make you mad? Your team is trying to rebuild, and is almost done. Then your star player leaves? He could have left mid season with a trade but nope.
