Marner deserves a big salary and he'll get it. If it's in Toronto, we're screwed. If it's elsewhere, we're screwed. So how was Tavares a good signing? JT was good for the Leafs, but others were sacrificed in the process. We needed defence and some tougher guys who can play, not $11.5M on Tavares.

    Leafs are in cap hell for one simple reason, they are paying young star players super star money. Players are paid for potential and not their performance. Leaf players are overpaid when you look at their playoff performance. Tavares, Mathews and Marner are not super stars, they have achieved nothing in the playoffs.

    • @davidmccalla3609

      With that logic McDavid isn't a superstar either since he's done nothing in the playoffs

    • @gordonbgraham
      @gordonbgraham Před 5 lety

      Tavares scored 47 goals in his first season with the Leafs. Who says they can't keep their core group of forwards? Marner will sign...there IS enough space for him. Dubas has masterfully secured the core and will continue to augment them with moving pieces over the next few seasons to give them a chance to compete. In the meantime, contracts are going up. Trouba just signed for 8M. He's not a top paring D. He's a number 3 guy at best. Kevin Hayes just signed for 7M. He's a 40pt guy. The Leafs signed Kerfoot @3.5M. Kerfoot has put up 40pts in each of his first two seasons. The Leafs needed a player like Hjarlmarson? How about Tyson Barrie? And when Barrie moves on after next year, along with Ceci and Muzzin, that will open up 12M to sign a UFA D, like David Savard or Pietrangelo who will both be available next July. Sandin and Lilijgren will both be ready to move up after another year of top minutes in the AHL to hone their game. Dubas is thinking 2 to 3 years ahead all the time. The core is secured, all the rest are moving pieces meant to give the core a chance to compete every year. I'd say Dubas is doing a masterful job.

    Yeah guys money is hard 🤣
    I love Dangle, Tavares is great, I wanted him in Montreal. It's not about "not knowing a Superstar", it's about $11 million. They'd still be in cap problems at $83 million, another 1.5 makes a small difference. All of these "counter-arguments" are complete, absolute red herrings designed specifically to ignore the actual talking point, which is, two 11-mil players, a 7-mil player, and another probable 10-plus-mil player, ALL UP FRONT, is not sustainable if you want to win, and signing Tavares is part of what made that a reality.
    That's not even saying they were wrong to do it. That's another red herring. It's saying that doing that is a large reason why they are where they are with the cap, TODAY. It's also not saying that it can't be fixed. It very much can be fixed. There's a number of ways to fix it, some of which they've already done.
    It's actually quite easy to talk about something when you pay attention to what the other side is saying. 👍

He is on a great deal contract for the Leafs, but now the Leafs cant afford anything else. What's gonna happen next year when the Leafs have only 2 defenseman signed and can't afford anything more than league minimum? AGAIN this is not at all Tavares's fault he played great, took a discount and was just shy of a 50 goal season, not his fault. It's the NHL's fault for having a hard cap.

I love Steve Dangle, but he's not even offering an explanation as to why they're having Cap problems other than calling the guy an idiot and blaming the league.
    How do you have these contracts and NOT end up in Cap Hell?
    John Tavares - $10 mil cap hit
    Auston Matthews - $11.5 mil cap hit
    William Nylander - $6.9 mil cap hit
    Mitch Marner - projected $10.5-11 mil cap hit
    This is for 4 forwards. Almost half the salary cap. 4 forwards. Meanwhile, their AHL bottom pair defensemen are going to get railroaded come playoff time and they'll be playing Reilly 35 minutes a game.

    John Tavares was not necessary signing. He had a big year in terms of points but most of that would have been picked up by others if he wasn't around (Kadri, Brown and others were sacrificed). You just can't have all these top salary guys on one team. The Leafs won't go anywhere - cap hell + outdated, stubborn coach. Babcock continues to play Marleau when he was ineffective and has better weapons on the bench. Wtf?
    A month later Marleau wants out - and it takes A 1ST ROUND PICK to get did of him. WTF!! Going nowhere.

    • @gordonbgraham
      @gordonbgraham Před 5 lety

    • @DF-hu1jx
      @DF-hu1jx Před 5 lety

      We'll see, but I'm not so sure. Having half your cap space tied up in 4 or 5 players will strangle them and there is no cheaper talent on the Maries ready to step up this year aside from Bracco who Babcock won't play regardless. Sandin & Lily aren't ready yet. I watched the Marlies play off run and they had trouble with top players from other teams. I suspect the team will take a step back this year.

    • @gordonbgraham
      @gordonbgraham Před 5 lety

      Trouba just got paid 8M. He's a number 3 D at best. Kevin Hayes just got 7M. He's a 40pt 3rd line centre. Salaries have gone up. What the Leafs are facing now, every team will be facing within the next few seasons. All teams will have to secure a core with half the cap and augment their roster with serviceable vets on PTOs, like the Leafs did with Ennis this year and Edmonton did with Chaisson. Like they've done with Spezza, as well as find decent players in Europe, which there are more of since the gap has closed considerably over the past 10 years (Finland just won the WC with not a single NHLer in their lineup against teams stacked with NHL stars). While continuing to draft and develop players who will step in to fill out the roster. Look for big names to be moved in the final years of shorter contracts, so that teams can continue to stock the system with young talent via picks. There's a reason no team has offered a contract that would cost them 4, 1st round picks. No, Sandin and Lilijgren aren't ready yet, that's why Muzzin, Ceci and Barrie were brought in as placeholders. One of them should be ready by next year, in a 31 team league they will be able to handle 3 pairing duties. In the meantime the 12M that opens up with Barrie, Muzzin and Ceci moving on, the Leafs can sign a UFA D and or move one of Nylander, Kapanen or Johnsson for a guy like David Savard or Brett Pesce, a solid stay at home D. The NHL has changed. A solid core with moving parts around it will be the norm from here on in. Dubas and Pridham are ahead of the game. Pridham wrote the parameters of the CBA. Dubas is handling it masterfully.

I mean I'm not a Leafs fan, however the truth is that Shanahan damn well knew he would be in this position if he signed Tavares yet he did it anyway.... Look, had he NOT signed Tavares Marner would be signed and the Leafs would have lost NO ONE.... Now look at what the Leafs have had to do because Shanahan thought it was a good idea to sign Tavares.... Look, Tavares is a special player but was he worth this whole fiasco?? was he worth losing all of these players and Marner holding out??..... I mean I hope Leafs fans understand that there is a very good chance that Nylander is traded to get Marner signed.... Not only that but there is a chance Marner's rights are traded....... And I told Leafs fans this was going to happen last summer but they were so drunk off of Tavares juice that they were oblivious to this or actually believed that all their RFA's were going to take "discounts" because you know "Toronto".... LOL yea right, Marner wants to get paid - he deserves to get paid and anyone that think's Marner is greedy is an asshat .... What about Tavares and the 50 million ++ he's already made, and the 80 million the Leafs owe him??? yet Marner is the greedy one?.... And NO, I wont blame Tavares for this situation -- all that dude did was sign a contract.... It's 100% Shanahan...

    The leafs have 11.1 after they LTIR Horton. Marner is not worth 10 plus. I hope he gets offer sheeted for a ridiculous amount, so Dubas cant match. Why would he match at the lowest end of the 4 firsts at 10.65 roughly. I wouldn't match. 11.1 in capspace 7 firsts over 4 years and you trade for a slick 7-8 million dollar playmaker and include Ceci in the deal, giving you enough to get a Top RHD. This could all be fixed and the leafs would be so much better if a team is that stupid. 1 good year because Tavaras is your Center and he wants Tavaras and Matthew's money. You will lose this debate if you think Marner is worth Kucherov money. You will also lose this debate if you think that both Tavaras and especially Matthew's isnt much better or deserve what they got.

    I don’t think it’s JT’s contract that’s the problem, it’s Matthews.

    For the last 4 seasons I often wondered “How does Toronto have all this money to be buying up half the league?” Well now I see it’s time to pay the reaper’s due.

    When the Boston series went south in the last 2 games, Tavares was the only Leaf player to push right up until the end. Arguably the best player on your team can not be a reason a team is tight against the cap. When you're tight against the cap, you start by getting rid of your bottom 6 players and bottom pairing D-men. You get rid of almost any other player on your team in order to keep a player like John Tavares. So if you have a chance to acquire John Tavares, but it means you have to lose a player like William Nylander, or Nazem Kadri, you would pack their bags immediately. Personally, if I could sign Tavares, but have to lose Patrick Laine, or Jack Eichel, I would have to strongly consider it.
