How To Dial in the Gaggia Classic Pro - economically with a hand Grinder.

  • In this video, we do an experiment. We dial in the Gaggia Classic Pro for espresso, using the 1Zpresso Jx-Pro for the first time, with bean brand new to me: the Höga Kusten Harrar. In this experiment, I go through 4 trials, trying to find the sweet spot for a proper 1:2 ratio of espresso to yield in around 25 seconds. I also use distilled water with an additive from Third Wave Water, which allows the coffee to shine, and also prolongs the longevity of the machine.

    You are very calm for someone who got it right the first time then went all the way from 16 back to 14 unnecessarily

      Yes well, the first shot was really screwed up with the poor seal between the PF and the brew group. Shots 2 and 3 were also not sealed well enough. I finally got the PF locked in well enough in shot 4.
      Let it be a lesson I guess, that not all aftermarket parts are created equal. That PF gives me trouble, but the OEM PF fits perfect and doesn't leak. Maybe I should revisit and redo the video at some point.

      Hey Tom!
      Faced the same challenges as you when I first tried the JX-Pro.
      Then I realised one ‘click’ / number actually means 4 clicks.
      So, if for the espresso the grind size guide indicates a range from 12-16 clicks, it actually means 12-16 multiplied by 4. So 48 to 64 clicks in total.
      In other words, when you look at 1zpresso’s grind size guide, it indicates over 1 full rotation (so over 40 clicks) to reach the espresso grind size. 48 clicks to be precise.
      Give it a go, took me a while to figure it out.

    I get to see somebody else's workflow with the GCP & the JX-pro, this is my set, too. I love the one minute effort it takes to grind, enough to get the blood to flow, not enough to break a sweat, (but I move a lot slower than this in the morning.)

    Great video
    I am currently using a 1ZPresso K-Pro. You will definitely get a workout on the lighter roasted beans. Using medium to darker roast is actually a breeze with these grinders

    That machine really need some gasket sealing. Am hoping you could make comparison about dedica and breville baskets and portafilters if they are compatible together. As always nice video 👍

      Hi Rezart, actually I think the issue is that this is an aftermarket PF that does not fit perfectly. So it really has to be locked into place much harder.
      The machine has probably only seen 200 extractions...

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner there is gaggia PFs with 6.6mm fins and some with 7. you have to use the ones with 7mm, the other ones are for older machines. maybe that helps.

    What a great video! I have a few questions for you though:
    1. Have you installed the OPV spring in the Gaggia to mitigate the pressure?
    2. Are you controlling the temperature on the Gaggia?
    3. Are you doing a pre-infusion?

      Well, the Profitec is going to be more temperature stable, since it has a PID.

    I'm still dialing in a JMax on a Gaggia pro. I grind sideways so I can hopefully control how many beans are in the grinder. Makes it a lot easier but still a workout.

    Hi Tom, I'm completely new to Espressos. What powder did you add to the water at the beginning of the video, before pouring the water into the machine? What does it do?

      Hi there! I was just demonstrating a product by a company called third wave water. Water comes with certain minerals in it. Some of those minerals are harmful to the machine, such as if you have too much calcium. That is what causes scale. If you use the product shown in the video, and put it in distilled water, it will both make a tasty drink, and be gentle on your machine.
      You can also use a Britta filter, to filter out the majority of the scaling minerals.

    Another excellent video. I have had the 1Zpresso Pro and Max. Max is designed for espresso with faster (less effort) cutting burrs, and magnetic grind catcher and is superior in every way for me, you still need your gym membership 😀.
    It has hundreds of external click adjustments which makes dialling in very accurate and easy, particularly useful if you have a machine like the Dedica where other adjustments are more limited.
    I wonder if 1Zpresso would send you one to review?

      @@wakeawaken430 My comments relate to the comparison between the Pro and Max. Faster cutting burrs reduce the effort as does the longer crank on the Max. It's not rocket science.

    Hallo Tom, alles klar? Viele gruess aus England. (bin ein Insel Affe :) ) I enjoyed that, esp as I have Gaggia Classic 2019 but I installed a 9 bar spring. I used Timemore c3 at 7 clicks for espresso 16g in/32 out and takes 31-33 seconds without pre-infusion seconds, but, and BUT! it took much trial and error, believe me.
    I now want a Niche duo, and fed up with hand grinding.
    I will keep learning from you.

      Oh yes, the Niche will be a treat over the JX Pro. I also find hand grinding pretty cumbersome. But, they're good for traveling, or as a first purchase before dumping a lot of money into equipment. Cheers!

    Hey Tom, your Gaggia is using the 9 bar spring, right?
    And side note: I have a Kingrinder K6 (1Zpresso's poor but very closely related cousin) and I have to say that grinding with it is actually quite easy, even for light roast beans on espresso settings.

    Habe vor einem Jahr 65€ in eine Umkehrosmoseanlage investiert. Einfach an den Wasserhahn anschließen, fertig. Die Bezüge sind viel besser und das Entkalken der Maschine kann man auch vernachlässigen!

    3:09 Today I received a 1Z JE-PLUS coffee grinder, and having misunderstood the instructions, I set it to 60 clicks instead of 6 circles. I filled in the light roast and it was even heavier than at this point in the video)

    From the label on the bottle, you used distilled water for technical purposes, which contains traces of heavy metals - not sure if you want that in your coffee - and therefore body. Please be careful and use FOOD grade distilled water, so you don’t get traces of heavy metals (atleast from the water) in your coffee. Have a nice day 😄

    Just subscribed to your channel. I own a Delonghi Dedica EC685 and I like to upgrade to one of these, 1) Gaggia Classic Pro 2) Dedica Ec885 3) Arte. I narrow it down to 1 and 3 and I am inclined towards 3, the Arte. Both are priced roughly the same in my country with the Gaggia a little more expensive(10% more). Let me know what you think. Make it brief it's fine with me, thanks.
    BTW I also own a fairly good grinder already.

      Hi there! Which market are you in? If you already own a good grinder, then you don't need the Arte, with the integrated one. In that case I would go for the GCP. The EC885 is nice too, and I find it more ergonomic than the GCP, but the GCP has the potential to make the best espresso of these 3. Cheers!

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner thanks. looks like you cannot "fine tune" the Arte to get the best coffee. I find the Arte has a pressure gauge is easier to "fine tune" the grain size at the same time looking at the pressure gauge whereas the EC885 there is no pressure gauge, hence working in the dark(too many tries) to get a good-tasting coffee.
      GCP is already too old design and too manual and has to fiddle too much(dozoing, grain size etc) to obtain an "optimal" coffee taste.

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner Yes, It is lovely grinder. You feel the Italian taste. However, It needs at leasr 2 mod. to make it perfect grinder. Niche zero a full package grinder. No need for modification. Just grind and shot.

      The default spring is close to 12 bar. I installed the 9 bar spring.

      @@Ziz1L For a beginner, no it's not significant. But it does make a difference, and it does make the shots a little more tolerant, since the flow is not as high. But this machine works VERY well out of the box, too. Cheers!

    Do you mean going from point zero to one full rotation plus four major clicks, when you say 14 clicks? (14*4=56, which is equal to 10*4 + 4*4)

      Actually, it doesn't misbehave with the original PF. The aftermarket PF doesn't fit as well. This machine is still almost new...

    I’ve been grinding for well over 4 minutes on 14 clicks. Something isn’t right. I’m not weak by any means lol

      Huh, that's weird. Could it be that maybe your grinder needs to be calibrated? Otherwise, check for rotation, to make sure the burrs are aligned properly. See here: czcams.com/video/9aCaKFkG-r4/video.html

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner turns out it’s actually 40 clicks to get a full rotation. So, to get ‘14 clicks’ you actually have to rotate to 56 clicks. This still didn’t work for me, probably due to the terrible portafilter that comes with the Gaggia Classic Pro :( need to buy a bottomless portafilter!
