Agree with everything you said, we don't need it if it gets in the way of the sequel or don't get something substantial.
That being said, the clock started in November 2023 after the Nintendo Switch release. So it's only been 8 months max imo. Putting the one year mark late 2024, to Q2 2025 for 1.5yrs since the final release of HL.
I think it could just be that they don't need the whole team on pre-production, so a Directors cut is a good way to keep staff on-hand and still working on things in the engine and world.

I want to point out that the directors cut of both Ghosts of Tsushima and death stranding was the jump to next gen. Since Hogwarts is already on current gen, and if there isn’t a decent sized dlc, I wouldn’t really see the point in it.
I'm hoping a few hour long mission that could be a bridge between HL and HL2 🤞
Considering the amount of cut content there appeared to be in the game, it may be they are now trying to implement some of that with a director's cut? That is, if the rumor proves to be true.
We probably won't get a full companion system like what modders stumbled on, but maybe expand on some characters storylines if they had some concepts for them already (Amit seems a likely candidate), or add a small new area to the map.
So would it be an ad on (so people who already have hogwarts legacy essentially just buy a dlc pack) or would we have to buy the game all over again?
I hope with this Hogwarts legacy director's cut they finally add quittage because they keep mentioning it when we play the game

If everythings on the disk with no forced downloads then il get a directors cut day 1
I would much rather they focused on the next title instead of doing more for HL. I don't feel like the game needs more.

All I know is fucking day one for me. lol, specialy if it's got tons of stuff that was missed and removed. or cut. hell look at persona 5 royal. that game is pretty much person 5 the directors cut. and I fucking loved that.
If it doesn’t have new stuff sprinkled in through hogwarts and stuff or new dlc areas or more feminine clothes for girls and just more cooler clothes in general or just more new stuff to make it worth buying then im not interested. A few cosmetics don’t justify buying it again. I think most will agree. I doubt whole team working on it if they are. They got people working on hogwarts 2 for sure. You can sprinkle some new stuff through base game if anything in hogwarts legacy

I mean Hogwarts Legacy was my favorite game of 2023, but I probably won’t get this unless it comes with some DLC like a new storyline. I already own the game.

They are making a directors cut because they realise how shitty their summer update was. If you can even call it an update
Stop re releases remakes, remasters, directors cut, bonus edition it gets OLD. These companies just want guaranteed profit and it’s annoying no risk no reward
