I Made Leaf Shoes out of REAL Leaves!

- What else do you do with giant leaf leather than make a pair of leaf shoes? I've wanted to experiment with different plant leathers to see how they compare to the types of leathers that work well for shoes. It took a long time to finally source some of the raw material, but with an elven photoshoot coming up, it seemed like the perfect time!
I had to be a bit creative with this design and process, however, as leaf leather is much more fragile and unforgiving than regular leathers. So not every style or last shape would do well. Shoemaking is usually a tough process that puts a lot of stress on the materials in order to get a clean shape. In the end, it was more like making a paper shoe than a leather one!

Those shoes are ultimate faerie goals. 🧚♀️ They look so beautiful. I wish the leaf leather was more durable because I would want to wear them everywhere.
Yes!
Yes, me too! Would like to see the pics of the shooting, too!
When you think Nicole's channel can't get more autumn vibes than it already is...
*Rachel Maksy voice* ALLLLLLLL THE AUTUMNNNNN!!!!!!!🍁🍁🍂🍂🍁🍁🍂🍂
@@valeriekhall mkdsks totally!!!
Really? Her channel is more of a winter than an autumn, or?
@@ThingOfSome 😂 Rudolph
It sounds and looks like the leaf "leather" is more accurately, leaf "fabric". The shoe looks stunning and the tacking process was soooo clean! My goodness youre a truely talented craftsperson.
I think Nicole puts a lot of effort into making autumnal themed items to make up for the fact that fall last like an hour in Nevada.
Me thinking because I’m proficient at making espadrilles so I could make shoes & then seeing the magnificent & difficult skill that goes into Nicole’s shoes… If nothing else I’m determined to learn. I just may be limping around in something that will get me tons of the “What’s are those?!” remarks until I develop that much skill. 😉
Here I thought you were going out picking up leaves and gluing them together into shoes. Never knew of things like leave leather. One of the reasons I watch channels like yours. Always keep learning.
I saw a post online about Mary Pickford, someone commented that in almost all pictures of her and other people of that era, their feet bulge out of the top of their shoes. I would love a video about why it seems their shoes didn't fit properly, if that was common at the time period or if those pictures were wearing decorative shoes just for the photoshoots and real shoes would fit better.
I'd be very interested to know more about this as well.
I have a feeling that small feet were probably associated with femininity so they crammed their large stompers into ballet type slipper that were far too small for them. Nicole does have a video on how the Victorian shoe makers could use optical illusion to make their customers large feet look tiny and delicate czcams.com/video/Sj9oVEK5isg/video.html so small feet were clearly a 'thing' back then and the notion seems to have leaked into the Edwardian era as well.
Probably just like most shoes are made to give you bunyuns and not fit your toes well even to this day. Our feet are supposed to widest at the toes. Just look at images of baby feet.
I can't be-leaf how well these turned out. 🥳
Wow, such craftsmanship. My mind is boggled at how perfectly the leaf patterns match between the two shoes.
The vein details on the leaves are so stunning in the closeups!! Trying to replicate all those tiny, symmetrical veins on real leather would be so painstakingly hard, but the end result of shoes that look like your gorgeous creation here, but that can last years, would be sooooo worth it!
😻😻😻 That’s so cool 😎. I would be tempted to make a pair out of regular leather using dye to make the veins. Or make leaf spats to go over a taller pair of laced shoes or boots 😻
Yes. Too cool to be just one temporary thing.
I have made birch bark shoes. They used to measure how far a place was on how many birch bark shoes needed to make the journey.
I am very jealous of these shoes perfect for fairy cosplay, a fantasy renfaire costume etc. But also your nails look awesome, my nailbeds are super short so even when my nails extend past my finger edge, they still look like M&Ms. Long nailbed envy for real
Thank you for dealing with “vegan leather “. As a vegan, I’ve been wanting to know what you thought about the options currently out there. It’s a technology that is coming along… But isn’t 100% replacement. What it does it does really well and what it doesn’t do it just doesn’t do. Thank you!
Yes! I've always considered "vegan leather" as just green washing, since it must be made with some chemicals and plastics to actually behave like leather, especially the cheaper options. If you are vegan for environmental reasons, real leather is a way better option. After all, it is a remnant of an animal that is slaughtered for food, so why let it go to waste? And it will eventually dissolve back into the earth, unlike fake options.
@@ettaz Specifically because it is a byproduct of animal agriculture. It puts more money in the pockets of the meat industry and reenforces the demand for animal products.
@@ettazsadly it is not often remnants, as meat cows are raised differently than leather cows (if memory serves)
Nonetheless, still biodegrades n the like, which is yay bueno
@@Alex-ki1yr even as a retail consumer you can get a whole hide of leather for $200 or less. So I don't think it can make any economic sense to raise cows only for leather.
@@Alex-ki1yr My understanding is that there are cows raised just for leather, an example being calf leather for luxury brands as the demand for veal is low but that is not the case for the majority of leather. Depending on how specific you want to be with your definitions most leather is either a by-product or, maybe more accurately, a co-product. Essentially the whole livestock industry is viable because there are multiple products and the total money from those products make it worth it, the term by-product suggests the income from leather is more of a bonus whereas co-product makes it clearer that the income is still an important part of keeping the industry profitable. Because of this people have the idea that if you reduce the demand for leather you'll also reduce the viability of farming meat as you remove a source of income that makes it profitable. Personally I don't see this as being a likely situation and feel that in such situations they would most likely just resort to other extreme cost saving measures likely keeping the animals in worse conditions and continue farming them for meat but that's just my cynical mind.
They look like fairy shoes! It's a shame that the leaf leather can't withstand stress.
I hope you can find some occasion to wear them. But they'd look awesome as a bookcase decoration too.
Oh, these cane out absolutely *stunning*. You look like your about to perform in a fairie ballet!
Fascinating video! I've never heard of "leaf leather" so this whole thing was a new experience from start to finish. The completed shoes turned out to be so beautiful
these are definitely irl magical boots of elvenkind
Making an outer layer of a dress with leaf leather/fabric would be SO COOL for a cosplay or an autumn/faerie themed outfit
As soon as I saw the website with the leaf leather, I thought of @rachelmaksy ! I think she needs a dress or skirt of these !
I think that leaf leather is pretty neat! Even with the woven fabric backing, it crinkles and folds in a really unique way
Your love of shoemaking comes through in voice, care and action. These forest elf leaf shoes are perfect for elvan romps through the woods. Hope Bailey ❤ them.
These shoes are beautiful and getting to see how you made them really puts into perspective how much work you put into it. Thanks for always making such great videos
Giant leaf leather shoes plus Winifred Sanderson costume equals more Shenagians 👻👻👻
Unbelievable skill to work with such a difficult material and I love the elf vibes of the finished shoes xx
You never cease to amaze me with your wonderful creations. They came out so lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful shoes. It looks like they would dye the backing a matching color to minimize any scuffs or surface scratches and eliminate any edge issues. Thanks.
I love your shoe content! I'd be walking around with plastic bags on my feet when it comes to that photo shoot. Do not want these beauties damaged!
I've never even heard of leaf leather! There are so many fun materials I just have no idea exist wow
Its just beautiful, kinda look like ballet shoes for forest creatures. Thank u for sharing it with us!
That are so cute!!! I have a yearning for leaf leather in my crafting stash, but I'm banned from going into any new crafts! I love your work, these shoes are so good, making use of a non-ideal material and making it work. You are a very clever lady!
Beautiful!!!!! I also loved the autumnal color pallet you rocked in this video with your outfit, makeup and hair color ❤. Am looking forward to seeing what the leaf shoes will be worn with.
Absolutely beautiful and I hope we get to see the pictures of you wearing your elfin outfit and your leaf shoes. ❤
Amazing craftswomanship! It will be interesting to find out how long the shoes last before falling apart. Well done, Nicole!
Oh wow, those are cute! I'm wondering if Scotch-guarding them would help keep them a little more abrasion resistance.
Beautiful, finished shoe! 'Relief cuts'--a new term and concept for me. I love watching you construct shoes. What a great skill.
All the effort you put into smoothing really paid off - the toes of the shoes look so graceful!
These make me want pointe shoes made out of leaf leather - i'm sure they wouldn't last very long, but can you imagine how pretty they would be?
That is such a whimsical pair of shoes! 🥰
(...even if it is only marginally stronger than paper shoes, but hey! 🙈👀)
I didn't know leaf-leather was a thing - very interesting. No doubt you already thought about this and with your experience understand whether it would work - but the shoe store sells this water protection spray - would that work with this type of material or stain it. Very pretty shoes, and actually made out of a real leaf - you're going to be the most on-point elf eva 😊
Oooooo elf/fairy shoes! I'm all in on these!
Why do all your videos just massage my brain right where I need it?
These are so cute! I absolutely love these and might try make some myself!
Thank you for covering the animal leather VS "vegan" leather discussion. All my leather shoes have lasted ages (and most were thrifted!) and are so much easier to repair.
Brilliant! Looking forward seeing a cute outfit combined with these super cute shoes!
It's awesome how I see this right as I'm thinking of making an autumn leaf cape and skirt
I love that you explored this option!
The finished shoes kind of have ballet slipper vibes to me for some reason. Perhaps it is the lacing. They are so pretty 🥰
What kind of leaf is this? It looks to me like it comes from the elephant leaf Caladium plant.
Absolutely magical!!!
How fabulous! What a wonderful skill to have!
Kombucha scobe can be made into a "leather" of sorts. One thing that I would like everyone to consider is this though. There are lots of old leather things that can be made into shoes and other items you do not have to buy new leather if that bothers you
I truly adore these shoe making process videos, especially in regards to your style and aesthetic. This one in particular is making my fairy-obsessed childhood heart so happy! 🍁🍂🧚♂️✨
Nicole, What a very fun looking shoe. Loved to see you make and explain the process.
Cheers
These are super cute!
Even though they won't hold up long term, they are awesome and look so cool. Topic piece for sure!
Very cute and unique design!
wow they are absolutely gorgeous 😍
Wow.Well done! I really enjoyed your video!What a patience you have.❤❤❤❤
Just amazing. Adore watching your process. You’re so talented.
What a thing to add to your skills on a resume...shoemaker! I honestly didn't know how complicated shoe making was and I always enjoy your show making videos.
These are gorgeous!
Just. WOW!
They are magnificent!!!
Nicole,
I love watching you create! You are so incredibly talented. I love how you explain how, what and why you do what you do. I feel so excited and inspired every time I watch and re watch your video's!! Bravo, and thank you.
With joy,
Audri
Love these!!!
Beautiful work, as always ❤
Those look so cool! I love a leather substitute which isn't just 90% plastic, and these leaves have given me ideas about pokerworking leaf veins into similarly coloured brown leather for my own projects!
Astounding, beautiful, exquisite work!
They are amazing to look at.
Magical!! I swear these are something an elf druid would wear in a fantasy game or movie. They came out amazingly, and I both love and am heartbroken at how much time and energy went into something that will be so temporary. Still, a very enjoyable video and such a great end result 🍂
Omg. Leaf boots! Im perishing, they are so.cute.
Soooo awesome! Great job! 👍🏻
This is incredible!
Wow! I really appreciate you showing this difficult process, it's really cool! Beautiful shoes!
This was such a intresting video ! Thank you for sharing the process in so many details :D
Wow! Leaf shoes. GREAT JOB! 😊
Exquisite! and such a creative design.
Love to see the result of that Elf fotoshoot!
All I did was watch and I am absolutely exhausted. Well done ! 😂😂😂
Dang cute! Perfect elf shoes!
You are amazing! You're the Magic Lady!!!!!!!
How incredibly impractical and amazing!
Ah leaf shoes is a nice addition for fall everything.
These are stunningly beautiful. 🧡🍃🍂💚
Simply amazing keep up the great work 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Stunning
Nicole over here showing elves why they should keep some cows around for LEATHER!!
This was really fun to watch and the end result looks great
Lovely Leaf shoes!
Very impressive tour de force!
Omg, they turned out so completely lovely!
This leaf leather seams more like a novelty than anything else to me, but I have high hopes for mushroom leather still.
These are amazing!
Very insightful and lovely idea. Just subscribed.
Those shoes are gorgeous❤
This is Amazing. Very beautiful😀 you have some skills!🙌
so cute!!!
These are STUNNING 😍 They fulfill all my fairycore dreams!
Your level of patience and skill at making shoes is amazing! These are lovely! They are so delicate, though... I think I'll stick to using leather 😄
I am surprised you didn't leave the toe pointed to simplify the construction and make it easier to follow the natural leaf shape, though. I also wonder if it would be easier/more secure to build these like a turn-shoe, but just don't turn it, if that makes sense. In other words, construct it similar to veldtschoen, but with a welt over the leaf material so the welt sandwiches the more delicate leaf between it and the sole material.
Either way, they are amazing and I'm grateful you shared the process!
The pointed shape is easy until you get to the part that needs to fold under- then it's far more bulk into a small space! Pointed toes are the hardest to make smooth.
How amazing to watch this come together. I love the shoes, however impractical.
Very cool!
