  • Late Summer / Early Fall here in San Diego and the weather is still incredible. You don't have to go far to find an exotic catch. In this video, Afran Abutin heads out to La Jolla, CA on the Hobie Pro Angler 14 in search big Calico Bass and Yellowtail. Luck was on his side and he found both.

    I think mint is almost always a killer color! I use Tady 45’s, Salas 7x, Kicker 25, JRI 7 or 4, preferably in some variation of mint! The fish seem to prefer something with a softer contrast than blue/white.

    If you ever encounter that dead fishfinder problem again, maybe look into Navionics. It’s basically a fishfinder on your phone where you can see a topographical map of the entire ocean and pin spots. You can also find structure on it as well. I believe it’s $10 a year for Navionics+ which includes those features.

      @@WARBAITS I was debating between the pro angler 14 and the compass. With the pro angler I get a lot more features and better stability which will help when throwing the iron, but with the compass I'm cutting off almost half the weight of the pro angler which is nice because I live in PV and would like to fish some of my local coves and most of them have steep trails to get down. Although the compass is still about 80 pounds which isn't ideal to be lugging up and down trails anyways so I'm leaning more towards the pro angler. Only thing holding me back really is the price difference.

    I love your videos! Thanks for the variety and review of your gear. I am wondering what length jig rod you use in the kayak. I generally only stand up in mine in bays or lakes, but would love to fish my United Composites 900 Monster, after I finish building it, for yellowtail and white sea bass. My Hobie Outfitter is wider and more stable than an Outback, but nothing like a PA. I’m just wondering how casting a long rod like that will work sitting down. If I have to cut 6 inches out of the but, I would consider that if necessary. I’d certainly like your advice, and your followers as well, on my concerns.
    Awesome variety and quality products on your website! I’ve got to start loading up.

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  Před 4 lety

      I would keep the rod 900 (9'). I can cast my 9er easily without standing up. Also, you may get on a boat and want that 9 foot length.
      With that being said, I bought my 8' (Calstar 6480) for the kayak or traveling. But I've taken my 9'3" on the kayak. It's definitely doable. The one thing I noticed with a longer rod on the kayak, I had to move my reel back towards the butt, so that the rod did not stick out from under my armpit and hit my sit. Also, gaffing a fish was a bit more challenging because there was so much rod out in front of the kayak.
      Keep me posted. Good luck!

    Hey Afrin. I've watched this video a bunch to digest all the info. One question I have is, what is it that makes north to south current particularly good for Calico fishing in La Jolla?

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  Před 3 lety +1

      I’m not entirely sure, I guess it’s just experience over the years. When ever the current is going south down the beach or pointed directly into the beach, kelp fishing is really good.
      If the current is going North it can be equally as good.
      If the current is going “out to sea” typically the fishing is bad for calico bass.
      You definitely want to find some current, it’s part of the puzzle. A little texture on the water, a bit off colored water and baits fish help also.

I was on a boat and a guy fishing a Kicked 25 light caught 8 yellows and the fishcount was 23 yellows. And those kickers had a tight kick to them. The tady 45 had a super wide kick and the yellows didn't care but I caught 7 bonito hahah.

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  Před 4 lety +1

      I'd say it has great action. It's not a super wide kick, but it's a very good kick. The Kicker Jigs are all made out of the same molds so they are all the same straight away. I have all the surface irons on the market, there really are not that many. I have a few really good swimming Tadys, A have a handful of really good Salas. Currently I'm fishing the Kickers, they seem to swim better.

    That is awesome, I live in Utah but have geared up a bit to fish out of San Diego on a charter for yellow's and tuna. Only got two half day trips in this year and it was too early in the yr. Where do you put in the water with your kayak? I like what your doing there!

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  Před 4 lety

      This is my first yellow on this kayak. I started kayak fishing for yellowtail in 2003. So I've had lots of time in La Jolla on the kayak. It's a lot of work but totally gratifying when it happens.

    Komodo 450 or tranx 500 for this type of fishing ?

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  Před 4 lety +2

      The Tranx 500 is a superior reel. But other reels work as well. Speed and line capacity are important for surface iron fishing.

    • @WARBAITS
      @WARBAITS  Před 4 lety

      @@johnsmith-xd9ej I like 80lb braid for the surface iron. This reel had 80 last season. I do think 65lb cast further because of the smaller diameter. Most likely I'll move back to 80lb braid next time I respool.
