Peanut butter brands pulled off shelves: Thezi Mabuza

  • Consumers possessing various peanut butter brands manufactured by House of Natural Butters are urged to return them to the point of purchase. The National Consumer Commission is conducting a nationwide assessment of South African peanut butter to establish whether they have been affected by aflatoxins, which can cause health complications. More peanut butter brands have been withdrawn from the shelves at Pick n Pay, alongside those sold at Dischem, Clicks, Faithful to Nature and other health shops. The commission has advised the public to immediately stop consuming these products and return them to the store they bought them from for a full refund, with or without proof of purchase. For more on this matter, we are joined virtually by the Acting Commissioner of the National Consumer Commission, Thezi Mabuza.

    Students who did molecular biology and microbiology are unemployed in SA, they are the ones who were supposed to do molecular testing and microbial identification before these products are released to public, but what can I say companies are no willing to give them a chance.❤❤

    • @Sipapate
      @Sipapate Před 3 měsíci +3

      @@sandyseale1 I farm a whole range of nuts from groundnuts, almonds, chestnut, macadamia and others. These things come from inadequacies in harvesting, processing for storage or packaging for resale. What this means is that the quality of peanuts across the whole industry was under par, screeners were untrained meaning that even the production line was compromised. Perhaps you could blame it on load shedding or something else but if the protocols were followed correctly you wouldn't be in this kind of a mess. Producing peanut butter is a very meticulous process, but it is also very simple, you can only overprocess it so much before you run into an issue with your product. Keep it simple and you will not have a problem

      The same way dischem sells you "healthy organic" peanut butter - but it is the exact same mass produced product with different label's. 😂😂🤣😂. Lot's of Sandton housewives, livid no doubt.
      To answer your question all products you buy in a general grocery store (and apparently health shops) are produced with a best effort recipe sampled randomly. You might just happen to get the crate that higher levels of certain compounds due to aging equipment and the like. i.e. all the ingredients weren't evenly stirred into the mixture so some bottles had too much of the feared chemicals.

    In today's world, there is a pervasive sense of skepticism towards the authenticity of products labeled as "natural" or "organic." It is disheartening to discover that many items marketed as such often contain ingredients that contradict these claims. The dissonance between what is advertised and what is actually present in these products can leave consumers feeling deceived. Returning to fundamental practices such as preparing meals from scratch and cultivating one's own produce emerges as an appealing solution. However, this inclination is often challenged by the demands of modern society, where convenience and speed often take precedence over the quality and integrity of the food we consume. It is crucial to recognize that in our pursuit of efficiency and material possessions, we must not overlook the importance of prioritizing our well-being and health.

    At what point does common sense by the consumer play a role though? It is impossible to completely control everything. This was found because the consumer's peanut butter looked off.. why aren't we being told what signs to look for so we can make sure it's not in ours. Sounds like an extreme way to handle this and a HUGE waste of food that is probably perfectly fine!
