Now you’ve taken a great history and done your exam, it’s time to order some labs and imaging to clench the diagnosis of SBO and start treating your patient.
Have you watched the video on How to Take a History and Exam in the Patient with SBO? citizensurgeon.co/SBOhistory
Small bowel obstruction is a critical topic in general surgery and if you’re a surgery resident or a medical student you will be called to the emergency room often to diagnose and treat this problem.
In this video today we’re going to build on the information we’ve learned in small bowel anatomy, small bowel physiology and the history and examination of small bowel obstruction. We’re going to get confident with interpreting labs and imaging in the patient with small bowel obstruction.
Important labs in small bowel obstruction include the CBC and BMP, how would expect these to change in a patient with SBO?
Plain films are important in the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction, what are the three films you would order?
What are the findings you would expect on plain films for SBO?
When would you get a CT of the abdomen in a patient with small bowel obstruction?

Watched some of this but of course I understand very little having no medical knowledge! However, I am in awe of the massive amount of material there is to learn and retain and which needs to be recalled in an instant when necessary. And you are only talking about one part of the body here! And then there are all the long complicated words! Just amazing!

Thanks so much for the feedback Nora! As we get further into any field, say classical music, the lingo gets more an more specific. Ostinato for instance 😊 had to look that one up!

    Amazing video Dr. Erik
    Thanks alot for your effort
I’d like to add radiological findings to supine abdomen radiography
It will give us valuable information regarding the level of small bowel obstruction by identification of dilated jejunum ( plicae circularis) in high small b. Obst. Or dilated ileum ( featureless bowel) and jejunum in low small bowel obstruction
Or even dilated colon in large bowel obstruction

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this with your husband, the only advice I can give and I do give my own patients is to write down all of your questions on a notepad, ask the nurses who is directing the care, and ask them all of your questions. May the days ahead bring comfort and answers to you both.

Do you have any home remedy solutions in regards to constipation or bowel obstruction? Last thing anyone wants to do is go to the hospital. Thank~

While I can’t give medical advice on this platform and I would recommend you see your family doc one common “home remedy” is to stay hydrated…dehydration is a common cause of constipation.
Here is a simple article on hydration and includes a water intake calculator…
