Should have added that part in the mounting the skin videos. I used furniture wax, probably not ideal but it was either that or coconut oil and i thought the oil a bit too thin.
I've never had to rehead as of yet. As for playing, Shea butter is great. I've also had excellent results using pure organic coconut oil as well. The kind that hardens into a solid. I find that either is a great way to keep the skin moisturized. Particularly when you do most of your drumming in front of bonfires. The slow baking process can really dry out the skin.
Great videos, really helpful! I have a question, I just ordered some raw linseed oil for my djembe on a recommendation, will that work as well as shea butter?
i think it's a good idea to oil the entire djembe with such an oil, this avoids the entire drum forming cracks. However around the rim i think it's a better idea to add something a bit thicker as a lube to help stop the skin from grabbing from friction and potentially ripping. I also sanded the rim because it had only been finished with rough shaping tools.
