    Jeff Lynn a true creative artist! 🎧🎶. A genius

    India, what I HELLA appreciate about you, is that you totally get the vibe and over all jest of this song. Back in the day, long distance calls were only connected by operators (long distant operator) even though it was a phone company scam, because it costed them no more to place long distant calls than local city and state calls, but they convinced the nation that it was more costly. Point being, he was talking mainly in an imaginary conversation with the lover who never picked up the TELEPHONE LINE , and also to the long distant operator, who he hoped would "let it ring a little longer, longer, longer, as he just sat tight , through the shadows of the night, (willing to) let it ring forever more". Jeff Lynne, often considered the 'fifth BEATLE' because he wrote and sounded so much like them and Lynne also worked with George Harrison (of the Beatles) producing high quality music. He and George Harrison and several others including Tom Petty and Bob Dylan formed a mega group called The Travelling Wilburys. Jeff Lynne was the soul and center and musical genius behind Electric Light Orchestra. The Fifth BEATLE if there ever was one. My opinion of course. ELO has several excellent albums, by the way. All worthy of a listen.

    I was barely 18, getting over my first love. We didn't have cell phones back then, I lived in a barracks and the only way to make a call was to go down the hall to the pay phone. And hope the person you were calling was at home. Reaching him was hit or miss, and gradually it was always "miss". I love this song but its always been bittersweet.

    This song came out when I was 9 years old. I remember the first time I heard it on the radio. I was sitting in the backseat of my brother 65 Nova station wagon while he picked up his girlfriend. Our dad had just passed away at 43 from a heart attack brought on by kidney failure and I was still reeling in sorrow from that. I just sat in the backseat with the car idling trying not to cry so when my brother returned I wouldn’t be seen with tears in my eyes even though this song was wreaking me. Not so much the words, but the melancholy notes and progressions of the music with Jeff Lynn’s voice pleading for a resolve to his breaking heart. To this day I still lose it to that memory of the little boy I once was. Music… Thank God for it…

    They sound so much like the Beatles here!!!! John Lennon praised the group, calling them the "sons of the Beatles".

    • @kenosull
      @kenosull Před 3 lety

      With the greatest respect to the Beatles (second greatest band in history), I find that statement a little condescending seeing as E.L.O. were far superior in many ways. For starters, the Beatles only existed for about eight years whilst E.L.O. were together for at least twice as long. Also, the Beatles evolved from a guitar band in their early years to the genius work of Sergeant Pepper whereas E.L.O. hit the ground running with massive orchestral arrangements as early as their first album. Paradoxically, E.L.O. DEvolved into a pure pop band by the time they got to their later stuff such as Balance of Power (1986). So while a public endorsement from John Lennon is quite an honour, it doesn’t really do service to Jeff, Bev, Richard et al.

    • @kenosull
      @kenosull Před 3 lety +1

      Furthermore, Jeff’s post-E.L.O. work puts him in the pantheon of rock gods, having produced masterpieces for Tom Petty, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Roy Orbison etc. And he still commands the worldwide respect of everyone in the industry. Jeff has even revived E.L.O. as a touring band with a line-up of excellent session musicians so he’s going strong after more than half a century.

    • @vmaxgr
      @vmaxgr Před 3 lety +1

      @@kenosull i respect your opinion, i guess ELO must b at the very top of your list, but even tho Beatles are not in the top 10 list of fav bands, i MUST admit that they have influenced more artists than any other group in the history of modern music. It doesn't matter how many years they were active how many records they recorded, they along with Little Richards and The Kraftwerk are responsible for what music sounds like today, or at least how it used to sound when it was played by real musicians. MHO it wont change and i wont argue about it

    • @kenosull
      @kenosull Před 3 lety +1

      Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m a HUGE fan of the Beatles. Their music transcends the ages and in 200 years, they will be regarded in the same light as Beethoven and Mozart. I’m just forever annoyed by the condescending notion that John Lennon (may he rest in peace) was effectively patting Jeff Lynne on the head. 😀

    • @kenosull
      @kenosull Před 3 lety +1

      @vmaxgr I’m sure John had the highest regard for Jeff (we know for certain that the other three Beatles adored him) so I very much doubt John’s comment was intended to be patronising, much the same as his famous “bigger than Jesus” comment was taken out of context. It’s just the common perception that the Beatles were so far superior and that this perception is widely accepted without debate.

    This song makes me think about my mom, dad, and my other deceased family members. Even after over a decade, I still want to pick up the phone and call. This song always makes me cry. The album ZOOM is a great album from the 90s when Jeff Lynne put E.L.O. back together. Old songs and new ones.

    Try "Operator" by Jim Croce or "Sylvia's Mother" by Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show two great telephone songs.

    E.L.O Initials, not a word. John Lennon was interviewed in the mid-late 70's and was asked what he thought The Beatles would sound like if they were still together. His answer: Electric Light Orchestra.
    Have you listened to Strange Magic?

    This was my grandmas favourite ELO song, it reminded her of her husband and would make her cry. He died years ago and she said it was all the things she'd say to him if he'd pick up a phone

    I don't know how someone isn't in tears after listening to this. It's heartbreakingly beautiful. Just a minor nitpick, it's just each individual letter E.L.O. and not Elo.
