4 Reasons for Fasting

  • Why do we fast? Fr. Mike explains that it’s not about getting more love and attention from God. Fasting is about self-mastery, discernment, sacrifice, and being a co-redeemer with Jesus. In this video, Fr. Mike dives deeper into these four reasons, helping you make the most of your fasting this Lent.

    Father Mike, I was 100 pounds overweight and decided to do a 40 Day fast, with Jesus as my role model. I'm currently on Day 27 and while I am doing the fast primarily for health reasons, I find myself focused on my relationship with the Holy Spirit, Christ's time in the desert, and catching up on my Bible in a Year Podcast. Thank you for helping me keep my focus.

    This is one of the reasons I love being Catholic. When I was a protestant I didn't understand so many things about worship and fasting that make so much sense now that I'm Catholic. I think all of the things that Fr. Mike mentions in the video are things I've realized as I've started implementing the discipline of fasting into my life. For a long time I was a slave to my flesh, but once I started fasting I was able to take control in this area. I also want to say that prayer and fasting go together (which is probably a no-brainer). It was my discipline in praying the rosary that I think probably led to the discipline of fasting for me. The Rosary is actually something that has been a big witness for me when I have doubts. Praying the Rosary daily helped me to overcome personal sin in my life, which led to a deeper walk with God, which led to the desire to fast. I'm not perfect by any means and I give all Glory to God for the deliverance I see in my life. I'm so much happier and fulfilled since coming to the Catholic faith and incorporating these disciplines into my life.

      Dear Sister, I believe in One God the Father, His only Son Jesus, and His Spirit the Holy Spirit... does that makes me a Catholic or a Protestant... Will I go to a separate Heaven... or the Bible is different for me...
      Please dont get me wrong... But we focus on the 5% differences we have...
      I believe in... One Body of Christ... (Ephesians 4:4-16):- "4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."
      * please read Ephesians 4:2-3...

      That is a very good testimony! Thank you for sharing. I for one am still a protestant, but I like listening to the teachings of Catholics, like Father Mike, because of the rich history that add to my understanding of what it means to follow Christ. I could not become a Catholic because of some of the things that we disagree on, but I cherish the wisdom that I have heard from some in the Catholic church.

      Catholicism is a cult. I'm sure there are some who are Christians who happen to be Catholic. But praying to Saints, indulgences, teaching of purgatory, and the idol worship of Mother Mary are all deceptions. The Catholic church has been corrupted throughout the years as well. The new Pope is very misguided.

    Fasting is the most powerful prayer, trust me. Fasting can solve any problem.
    I knew a girl who struggled bulimia for years. I decided to pray and fast for her every friday eating only little bread and drinking water. She didn't knew that. I prayed for 7 fridays and later she told me she feels much much better. She never vomited since then (3 years already). God healed her totally. Actually, she is my girlfriend and she will never find out how she got better :)
    I'm not saying this to boast, just to give testimony how great fasting truly is. Sorry for bad English :P

    • @dominikpavelic5339
      @dominikpavelic5339 Před 7 lety +18

      Why not? I'm not saying I stopped her, I prayed and God healed her. Jesus said there is a kind of demons that can be cast out only by fasting and prayer, so if fasting can cast out demons, how can it not heal someone? If you don't believe in God, I understand why you think those 2 aren't related, but if you believe, then how come you don't believe God heals. This is not the only thing that got solved by fasting, there are more examples in my life. E.g. my brother lived in sin with his girlfriend and I fasted and prayed. That exact day he sent me a message: he and his girlfriend are going tomorrow on a confession. They live in sin no more. :)

      Fasting can't solve every problem. A close friend of my family fasted and prayed for me for days when I was extremely ill last year. I made it through but I am still very ill. It seems some people are meant to suffer illness because it is God's will. I am learning to accept this even though I still do everything I can to heal - I won't give up - I know I am supposed to experience this life of pain for some higher spiritual reason.

      The devil can sneak in and take the power of good deeds. Just like Fr said, don't boast about fasting, don't think about weight loss, or don't think about how much more God will love you, because fasting will lose its sacrificial worship and offering. The devil knows how to dissolve soul saving sacrifices. Be vigilant, pray and fast in private.

    Revisiting this video today and it got me thinking. There was a time after I first watched this video when it was posted that I incorporated the heroic minute into my daily morning routine. Wake up on the first alarm as a form of sacrifice and obedience. Then after a while, my dedication to this practice started to wane and I began feeling guilt for not following through, day after day, leading me to continually start off my day feeling like I've already done wrong. A lie of the evil one of course, bc as I watch this back, it never occurred to me that if its negatively affecting my relationship with God, maybe I should just not fast (or do the heroic minute), like Fr. Mike says at 0:37. OK lol but moreover, revisiting this made me think 'why did I feel guilty?' [Internal dialogue:] 'Because the missed opportunity to do good.' 'If a missed opportunity can make you feel so guilty, what about a sin itself?? Directly doing harm--how much guilt that should then lead to contrition should u be feeling for that??' Anyways, your video helped me to re-orient my perception of my sins, as I can often brush them off like 'its not that big of a deal', but it is, so thank you. I hope this comment doesn't lead people to feel guilty, but to always repent and rejoice! 🙏🙏🙏❤️Praise God!!!!

    Fr. Mike, thank you for opening our eyes to the spiritual benefits of fasting. I find it so difficult to fast but after I heard you now, I don't think it is going to be difficult any more! You are an inspiration. This video was so motivating and I hope you get more and more views so that you can bring so many more to share in Jesus' suffering. Pray for me and my family that we may be more holy each day and to keep us in good health. Praise the Lord. Alleluia.

God is great! He let me find this video to tell me that I was doing something good in not sleeping past my alarm. Thank you so Fr. Mike for all of your videos I truly love all of them!!!

    I love being Catholic, when I was in Germany I called home on Sunday, when I did I could discuss the days Gospel reading, it’s the same in EVERY Catholic Church, other religions like Baptist preachers pick out any reading they want, and give THEIR meaning, Catholic Priest are telling you the Truth as learned while they studied in the Seminary🙏

    True... you don't need to fast only friends foods, you can let go of a bad habit or something you like... Im Chaldean Catholic and I have never fast the whole 50 days.. only like first week and last week of lent.. but this year for some reason I think I can do it! Not necessary fast till 12 o'clock and then eat but from things that I like and I started to read the holy bible every day which made me happy.. Hope I can do it for 50 days and give my everything to god not to ask him for anything, but just to thank him for everything he did for me...

      Fasting is a sacrifice, so it is offering up something GOOD - like sleep, like food - for a higher good (God's grace). We can't offer up an evil thing. So something that's a bad habit - if it is intrinsically evil - cannot be 'fasted from'. It can only be repented of, confessed, and repudiated completely. But fasting will help you with the discipline necessary to give up the bad habits.

    Thankyou for JPII's thoughts on Paul's "making up for what is lacking in Christ's sacrifice." I have always had trouble with this because I always thought JC's sacrifice was perfectly complete. I can almost always fast for 24 hrs on Fridays (regardless of the Liturgical Season), and what that does for me is to spend that time thinking about JC. All good.

    I am so glad I stumbled in to you and Bishop Robert Barron! I am a cradle Catholic who had terrible religious education,. My parents sent me to CCE/Sunday school assuming I was getting religious education, but by the time I was in Jr. High I was getting lessons on everything but religion. As an adult (68 yrs. old) I have always know a lot was missing and I stunned my parents when they found out how little I was taught. I did't realize as a kid I needed to tell them I was learning about football, current events etc. I thought that was what I was supposed to be getting,. I stumbled across the two of you durning COVID and WOW I have learned so much. I have had questions answered and now I have lots more! This has been such a great experience. Thank you!!!!!
