I can’t comment on the clutch issues but if it needs a new clutch, then LOF is the best there is. I have the same model as you, possibly running a bit more power and the LOF + output shaft works a treat. I’d also recommend fitting their half shafts as well, which combine the standard half shaft and flange in one piece which will eliminate any backlash you may have. Give Luke a call, his customer service is legendary.

I’ve heard a lot about LOF, I’ll have to check them out

I had a similar issue getting in and out of gear with K.T. with the slave cylinder not doing its job properly. I had a silty like substance in the clutch fluid. To get her back home I put new fluid in the system, pumped the clutch to get some form of bleeding done with the intention of swapping the clutch fluid out, however she has been fine since!

very likely either master/slave cylinder as muck fluid is the indication of seals perishing in the master/slave cylinder

i believe its clutch master cylinder or springs on clutch have failed pumas are known for it which would make sense with the rattling you was hearing

Clutch spring rattle, spring may have fallen out, speak to Luke at LOF he will sought you out and will happily discuss the likely issues I have Lof clutch and M82 shaft up date on my Puma and Luke also supplied uprated spigot bearing which is basically the latest spigot bearing that Land Rover put in the last Pumas. How friendly is your garage because with gearbox out its easier to to get to parts of chasis not usually seen and good chance to paint some protection on it if required.

Thanks for the steer! I'll have to reach out to the guys at LOF for recommendations on what to swap out. Great point around using to opportunity to apply some chassis protection too!

If the fluid is dirty then it’s the cylinders breaking down. I have the exact model with the exact problem two years ago. LOF is your solution but I suspect you’re gonna get them sponsored anyways. If not already…😏

My puma 2.2 is currently at an Indy workshop with *exactly* the same symptoms. Will watch updates with interest. 150k kms.

I also had problems with my tuned 300tdi 90 and 110 killing the clutch(even the 130 version) now running LOF clutches and no more problems.

I had a similar issue At around 100k miles with my puma 90 the clutch slave cylinder failed and left me stranded but managed to limp it home So had that changed and a new OE clutch too whilst the gear box was dropped. It’s been fine since

Reassuring to know that you've had no problems after swapping out to LOF kit!

Had the same problem with my Isuzu ... it was clutch master cylinder or was it the baby clutch cylinder that was shot. Was a simple fix. Theoretically would be the same for your defender

Dirty fluid could indicate a bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder.

It happened to my 1961 Citroen id19. Clutch pressure plate had split in half so I could not change gear. Or clutch fork is damaged pin must gone through . But I would thought puma should have had modified fork 🍴. But like others say master cylinder or slave cylinder seals 🦭 are gone. Always start from simpler option first .

Thanks for the comment! Hopefully the garage will take this approach too and identify the real cause rather than replacing everything

I drove an older company SWB which rotted at the rear chassis. It was replaced by a brand new LWB again (Transit engines model), a company vehicle which was meticulously maintained. However it was shockingly unreliable to the extent it was disposed of. Totally unacceptable bearing in mind the cost. Unbelievably, people are asking stupid money for 2nd hand ones. If it’s your own money, please forget misguided brand loyalty’s and don’t do it. I know it’s a boring statement, just go the Toyota Landcruiser route.
