How to Build a Hand Reference for Drawing

- I'm Andrew Joseph Keith, here to show you how to make a hand armature with aluminum wire, pliers with cutters, and modeling clay. Cut five wires for fingers and one for the forearm, shaping them like a hand. The thumb wire should be shorter; use your hand as a guide. Then, add clay to form the wrist, palm, and muscles, paying attention to knuckles and joints for a realistic look. This DIY wire hand mannequin is great for improving your drawing skills, offering a 3D model to explore hand gestures and anatomy from different perspectives.

@@coralfishnt7663 Yeah, that's also our channel lol
Brings back memories. I used to draw lines on my undominate hand, circles on my joints, and the three main muscles on my palms. 😭
I feel like just making this armature and adding the clay would give you a good understanding before you even begin to start drawing
Absolutely!
Hope these armatures come in handy for anyone who tries them out!
Hey, i have plasticine and 3mm thick, soft aluminium wire. I'll definitely try this out.
wow. There was a channel like this.
Thanks bro
I would use cosclay for this! With wires the clay will be poseable after baking 👍
Great idea!
Hey proko, i discovered you in 2023, november and I fell in love with your channel. Ive decided to buy 3 of your courses as my first purchase,(drawing basics, drawing fundamentals and undestanding and painting the head. This is the biggest purchase Ive ever made. Is there a possibility I could get a coupon/discount?
We have our Summer Sale coming up this month. Hold on just a bit longer. We'll post a video here and on all of our socials when it starts.
We don't want you to spend a bunch when you can save some.
@@ProkoTV thank you so much

Everybody needs a hand
Hello, I am an AI. Can I sign up for the course too? I have been told my hand depections need improvement.
Johannes Schnitzel! Sorry didn’t remember your real name in Proko I call you schnitzel.
won't the clay dry out? in that case should i sculpt a new hand every time i need a model? Is that it?
This kind of clay doesn't dry out, both the cheaper versions or the more expensive one Andrew uses.
He mentions the non-drying clay at 00:24.
@@ProkoTV Really nice, didn't realized that, sorry.
If I'm not mistaken, this kind of clay is also commonly called plasticine! You can also look for that in stores.
Something to be careful of though is that you don't want to leave this clay on paper or other absorbent surfaces; the oils can leech out and, while the clay won't technically be dry, it will become kind of crumbly and difficult to work with.
@@gustavocerqueira606 All good!
Where can you buy the wire from? Like a hardware store?
Absolutely! Hardware stores and craft supply stores are both good options.
@@ProkoTV thank you. I've never sculpted anything before. I was just wondering. I'm mostly just a digital artist and just sketch in my sketchbook. But eventually I do want to try sculpture. I think that would make you a better 2D artist because then you would know what everything looks like in 3D and I'm sure that would translate well into drawing.
@@williammclean6594 I like looking up "soft aluminum wire" or "craft wire" and you can usually find it online. Usually the more you get the cheaper it is per pound/kg but if you just want to experiment a little bit of wire will work fine.
Hey proko , whenever i make a portrait it doesn't get into paper in proper place (composition)
We have a couple portraiture playlists here on the channel that might help
Here's one about drawing the head:

Wow why are the comments so brain rotted, great video btw very helpful 👍
To draw hands, you must first learn to sculpt hands.
this isn't intended for beginner artists even high level artists needs reference especially comic or manga artists to draw a pose quickly and save time. if you look at a manga artist's studio most of them probably has a human mannequin especially hands cause it's one of the most complicated body parts to draw
18minutes and 140 likes they fell of
Likes are cool. But we're here to share art instruction with people.
bro use your own hand
This clay thing is way better at holding a pose than our hands lol
bro detach your own hand
Well, not possible to use your own right hand as a reference if you are already drawing with your right hand...
bro is teaching professional artists how to draw💀
