  • When Adolf Hitler entered the world stage as a fledgling politician in the 1920s and 30s, the German people were amazed at his energy and dynamic speeches. Some called him “mesmerizing” and “magnetic.” But what was the key to his success? Hosted by Colin D. Heaton. The Forgotten History Channel is a 10th Legion Pictures Production.

Hitlers decision to invade Russia... in hindsight was a huge strategic error. I read a book called the myth of German villiany by Benton Bradbury and it completely changed my view of both world wars and what really lead to ww1 which was the war of 1872. Quite an interesting book...

While I don't wholly support the Icebreaker theory in that the Soviet Union was getting ready to invade Europe in 1941, they were probably going to finish off Finland first, but I think war was inevitable between the Soviet Union and Germany. If you actually take the time to listen, or at least read a transcript of the covert recording of Hitler and Mannerheim, you absolutely get a feeling that the Soviet Union had been gearing up for war for 20 years.
Hitler's biggest strategic mistake was declaring war on the United States, although he was talked into it by Grand Admiral Erich Raeder who felt the navy was fighting with one hand tied behind his back, of course Raeder was responsible for one disaster after the other so I personally think it's fitting that he should get the credit for the biggest disaster of them all.
There is an interesting counter-factual though, if the Soviet Union had begun its counter-offensive a week earlier, or if the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor a week later, would Hitler have been so bold to declare open war on the United States? Because this is one of those small hinges that history turns on. Before the Soviet Union's counter-offensive the strategic picture for the Germans is actually pretty great, the Soviet Union seems to be on the brink of collapse, after which the huge manpower and raw material reserves will be opened up to Germany.
In hindsight we know this to be false but I'm talking about the contemporary German perspective, the start of December 1941 is looking like Christmas for Germany.

@@abrahamedelstein4806 You make great points, but even if Hitler had not declared war on the US FDR would have still pushed forward. He believed along with Churchill that Germany was the greater threat and he wanted war with Hitler, and Churchill needed the help. I also firmly believe that Stalin wanted another crack at Finland also, but if he did it again in late 1940-41 that would have left his southern flank open to a German attack should Hitler come to the rescue. Great post.

Don’t know if my impression is correct, it seems when a new drug is invented, and perceived to be effective, helpful, boon to society, any side effects are ignored by most. I’ve read back in the 1960’s, when LSD was invented, and distributed on the black market, little was known about it and no laws regulated it.

I watched a short clip of Hitler at an outdoor stadium a few months ago. Whilst happy, he was clearly animatedly so, sat down, surrounded by officials, he was positively bouncing up and down on his seat, he could not keep still. He was very clearly 'on something', possibly multiples of different substances.
Unsure when the video was taken, I think very early on in the war? Perhaps within the first six months of Operation Barbossa?
If a politician acted like that today, they would immediately be called out, thank goodness.

I totally relate to this. I was prescribed Adderall, one of the more powerful stimulants used for attention deficit. Many children and adults take this and other stimulants like Ritalin. They are kind of like Pharmaceutical grade meth, but not as powerful or dangerous as meth. Just like the soldiers in this video, I had lots of energy and drive but in the long run it burnt me out big time. I had to leave my complicated job which is why I was taking it. I slept a lot of the next 2 years. I use the analogy that using stimulants is like putting jet fuel in a car, it may go a lot faster, but at some point it will burn up the engine. I am one of many people that believe Trump takes stimulants. Given his age and his schedule and animated speeches it is very likely pushing him. It's no secret that it was/is given to our US fighter pilots on long missions. The newer stimulant- like drugs provigil and nuvigil are now the first choice for fighter aircraft.

This piece does help us understand the errors made in German tactics and the explanation for example of Hitler sleeping through the early stage of D day makes sense. Imagine the frustration of the Panzer commanders being forced to comply with the order to stand down while aware of the invasion. Also the lack of planning with Operation Barbarossa, not just with supply lines but the timing. When high command must have realised their forces would be facing the legendary Russian winter and the Russians, natives and used to savage cold, but also equipped with clothing required, they must have been concerned to say the least. That they penetrated as far as they did is a credit to the ordinary German soldiers.
So the idea Hitler and others in the High Command were utterly addicted to speed, and for over a decade, really does fill in the blanks. An excellent piece as usual.

I've seen it happen with people when they get involved with drugs. On the other hand I've seen people lives getting better when they stop with drugs, as well as drinking.

The British also encouraged Hitler to believe this through various covert means. Then he moved his forces in such a way as to further convince the Soviets of his plans. at that time. drugs were new and they didn't have the time to invest in such trials. they needed to get stuff done, like...try to take over the world... and so they paid little attention to the side effects on their soldiers or even to themselves. Life was brutal back then for most people

I had a heated debate with friends over 25 years ago that the reason Dunkirk took place was because the troops had run out of steam because they overused amphetamines. Looks like I’m not the only one that can make that argument.😊

The worst war mistakes, were allowing Operation Dynamo to be so successful, declaring war on the US over Japan's actions, and invading Russia. It is hard to know if a person should be happy that he became such a huge junky, or if it helped him become even more of a monster.

As messed up as it is, issuing Pervitin to German troops was an ingenious way to even the odds against superior forces. Remember: the Wehrmacht only had about 3-5 years to completely rearm IN SECRET against the British AND the French, whom both had massive economies of their own combined with their colonial industries abroad. The British & the French each had 20+ years of a well trained, equipped and financed standing armies, while the Germans had a reformed army that just sprung up as a political force under the table and off the books. They needed a way to even the odds against two substantially larger forces than they were, and to do so issued their troops Pervitin, and as a result managed to capture Paris & defeat the strongest land military on the planet at that time, in less than 6 months.

This is a concerning and, in a way, a disturbing subject. I'm glad, Mr. Heaton, that you've devoted attention to it. Most summaries of Germany during the 1920s and 1930s discuss (albeit, often in cursory fashion) Weimar Germany's economic crises, The Nazi Party's mysteriously rapid ascendance, and--as the 1930s ground on--persecution of German Jews and of German Communists and Social-Democrats. That the Wehrmacht pumped its warriors up on a powerful stimulant like Pervitin--and that Hitler became hooked on it--is news (to me).

Personally, in my opinion, due to several factors, Germany still would not have won that war in the east. First, Germany was not mechanized enough to cover that much terrain, and 3/4 of their transport was horse drawn. Second, they did not have the industrial capacity to compete with the U.S. once they entered the war. Three, North Africa drained precious resources (as did the Balkans) from the Eastern Front that could not be replaced. Fourth, once Stalin relocated all the industrial factories beyond the Ural Mountains, Germany had no way to bomb them and interrupt production. Fifth, Germany did not have the population to replace losses in the field. Sixth, Hitler, once he fired von Brauchitsch and took over the OKW personally, his bad decisions only increased the momentum of failure, as he had no check and balance. Thanks for watching.

Imagine how different it may have turned out if he wasn’t loaded. Fascinating to think of that was his undoing, intentionally or even more shockingly catastrophic if not and the doctor genuine believed this would help his leader and the army. Wild
