- Tea Leaf Salad (Lahpet Thoke) is the national dish of Myanmar. A friend gave us a package of ingredients for making it (without instructions), so we looked up recipes on the web and gave it a shot. We don't know if it's authentic, but it tasted great. Scroll down to read our recipe. #recipes #AsianFood
Lahpet means “green tea” and thoke means “salad”. These days Lahpet Thoke is served at the end of the meal, but in ancient times it was eaten after an agreement was hammered out by warring parties -- a sort of truce meal.

Lahpet Thoke - Eating BURMESE TEA LEAF Salad on the Streets of Yangon, Myanmar! from Mark Weins

Recipe
Lahpet Thoke, Green Tea Salad
Serves 8
Fresh ingredients:
10-12 Napa cabbage leaves, or other crisp greens
1 bunch cilantro
6-8 scallions
1 small white or yellow onion
3-4 garlic cloves
1 2” piece ginger root
2-3 serrano or jalapeno peppers
Pinch salt
In the Yuzana Box:
Fermented tea leaves
Roasted fried garlic
Baked sesame
Baked peanuts
Fried butterfly peas
Fried chick peas
Fresh chili garlic peanut oil
Utensils for preparation:
Sharp knife
Cutting board
Mortar and pestle (optional)
7 small bowls for ingredients
1 large bowl of mixing salad
Unbox the two bags of tea leaves and dry ingredients. Rinse the tea leaves and drain off extra liquid. Some people add lime juice to the tea leaves and soak them for a day. We were confused by multiple recipes and soaked ours in plain water overnight, but we now see that we didn’t need to do this.
Put the tea leaves in a bowl, and pour the bag of dried legumes, spices and seeds into another bowl.
Mince the ginger and garlic finely, or use a mortar and pestle to smash them into a paste. Put in a bowl and add the juice of one lime, plus the pinch of salt. Mix thoroughly.
Slice the cabbage into small ribbons and then chop coarsely. Put in a bowl.
Chop the small onion and the scallions, put in a bowl.
Quarter the tomatoes and slice quarters thinly, put in a bowl.
Chop cilantro and peppers finely, put in a bowl.
Arrange all 7 bowls around the larger mixing bowl. Spoon in salad ingredients from each bowl, proportions geared to your particular taste. Mix thoroughly (hands work best for this) and spoon a mound onto an individual serving plate. Enjoy the intriguing and slightly addictive taste and get the buzz from the caffeine in the tea leaves.

@@kevinvientianelaosShould not rinse the tea.Have it as it is.
I eat this twice a week in Thailand. I watched one time to see their recipe and they use this brand. My favorite salad so good.
if you soak in the water , the taste will change and no need cilantro and ginger also. the missing one is dry prawn.
The package you had doesn't need further preparation on tea leaves , it was already prepared with oil and all.good work.
Yes, we know that now! 😀
The crunching sound made me super hungry for that salad.
You would love it. It's like a snack and a salad in one.
I love this salad at a local restaurant so I bought this exact package to try to make myself. Glad to have you go first
I love how respectful you guys are! I just bought my own kit on Shoppee (it’s similar to amazon) and thank god i had a Myanmar friend that I could ask questions to. I can’t wait to try it! Thanks for this video. I’m sure you would love the other asian foods as well since most of their food are spicy and so full of flavour❤️
We still feel sheepish we didn't know how to prepare it properly. 😀And yes, we love all types of Asian food!
7 Pot Club no worries! Don’t beat yourself up over it. You don’t know better until you know better.
Anyways, now you have a Malaysian friend. If you guys ever need to cook Malaysian cuisine (a very multicultural country- our main races are Chinese, Indian and Malay but we have more cultures here) , you can always reach out to me via Instagram @aufabetagamma or email aufajoe@gmail.com. Cheers!
My heart broke when you wash, rinse and clean the tea leaf with water. You lost all the flavors with it. Its ready to eat. You only need to mix them. Or you can separate them and add fresh veggies like garlic, cabbage, tomatoes and chili to add more flavors l, and its the best if you have jasmine tea to drink with it
Nice! Will definitely have to look for this. Thanks for sharing
You bet Mark!
TRUST ME ITS HEAVEN IN YOUR MOUTH
Thanks for sharing that, Rob. It looked delicious!
Ah..my mouth was watering ☺️🤤
love from NE India.
Thanks! ❤️🌶
Always excited for another video
Thanks James!
I just found this for sale in Thailand. I gave it a try. First I made it straight out of the package. It was very spicy. The second time I ran hot water through the tea and it was better.
Mainly three tastes such as original, sour, sour and spicy.
Wow that looked so different. I think you did great job making it 👌. I'm glad nothing got broken 👍
Thanks Paivi! It was really delicious. Soon we will visit a Burmese restaurant and find out what it is really supposed to taste like.
Just changed my Thanksgiving dinner menu
Maybe you could stuff the turkey with it.
Look delicious
oh no you washed the leaves. it is already prepared. you do not have to wash it. oh well you live and you learn. Thanks for respecting the language and culture!
You're so right, live and learn!
Thanks you
Oh. You dont hv to rinse it as it is already added ingredients. You just need to add vegetables and mix them all.
You don't have to wash pickle tea leaf. Just put 2 or 3 table spoon of tea leaf.
Yeah, we didn't understand that. Live and learn!
😍
Is it available in Vancouver Canada? Looking for lahphet thok for a while..
I would check Asian grocery stores.
I'm from Myanmar
Hello from Minnesota!
I am myanmar
Original recipe:
That box(no wash of tea leaves)
Dry small shrimps
Tomatoes(slice thinly or chopped)
Cabbage( same)
Green or red chillies for extra spicy
Put more oil if the salad is too dry.
Fish sauce if the salad taste too light. Or if preferred.
U eat this with more chillies or garlics whole on the side too.
Also the bitterness is supposed to be the taste of the tea leaf. Another alternative tea leaf flavour is spicy and sour.
Thanks for all the info! We really didn't know what we were doing, but we'll try it again and do better next time.
I'm from burmese
The package should have come with instructions how to prepare it like most food packages do. Can't assume only Burmese people will eat it.
Mo no no.. it is ready to mix, addi g lime juice , tomatoes, and cabbage
No need to rinse ..
Just add, diced tomatoes, cabbage (or lettuce if you dobt like cabbage), lime juice, grinded dried shrimp, and if desired, sliced/diced fresh garlic and diced thai chillies.

Burmese laphet toke
Ummmm........UMMMMMMMMM....Srsly You never Needed to rinse them in water lol. Many of packaged Teal Leaf Salad box from Myanmar comes already preped. How can you know? Simple. Oily= alrdy fermented and preped for eating. All you need to do is mixed the two packages together and add some sliced Tomato. and ofc anything you think that will make a good combination with it. Sry for bad English.xD but srly you lose nearly all flavours if you rinse the alrdy prepared tealeaves . And i know you claimed it's not traditional thing. but. you only messed up a single step xD.
I know. We misunderstood something we read and now we know better. Live and learn! Thanks for watching! 😀
Thanks for information because my husband brought me some packs and I don't know where to start but I read your comment now I will enjoy my favorite salad mwahhhh
@@7PotClub I believe the recipe/instruction you got was probably for unseasoned tea leaves. The steps you did with ginger and garlic, those are for seasoning when the leaves are pickled but not seasoned. Back in the days, my mom would buy the unseasoned leaves and then mixed them up with ginger, garlic, lime juice, and chilies (all pounded). There are several types and several ways to eat it. I hope you will be able to try a couple more ways of eating it in the future. :)
Yes, we learned a lot! Looking forward to visiting more Burmese restaurants and trying different versions to get inspiration for making our own.
Hahhah washing the tea leaf what a wrong way to make
Thanks, Jacob. We know! We just leave this video up so more people can make fun of us. 😀We have learned our lesson!
