- Burmese food is something totally unique- a flavor profile shaped by an ancient history with roots connecting the empire to powerful culinary neighbors like China, India, and Siam, but with indigenous techniques and ingredients that make this cuisine all its own.
Somehow, in twelve years cooking and eating in Asia, it never occurred to me how strange it was that I didn't know anything about Burmese food. I never questioned why Thai, Vietnamese, and Malaysian food could be found anywhere, but the largest geographic country in mainland Southeast Asia- a place with a 4000-year history and an outsized influence on the continent- was invisible. But then I tried my first Burmese meal, and all of a sudden, a million questions needed answering.
This video is an attempt to answer- maybe not all of those questions, but at least...say...two or three? What are some of the iconic dishes in Myanmar? How did Burmese food take shape? And why have I never encountered it before?
We're diving into the Bangkok Burmese refugee diaspora to get as deep as we can into Thailand's hidden Myanmar subculture in a culinary adventure on OTR.

I am an American and when I lived in Los Angeles, I became friends with a Burmese man. He made me a meal once - I admit I embarrassed myself at how much I ate. I've never tasted anything like that meal before or since, and would dearly love to have been at the table shown in this video, as well.
This was very well-done. Thank you for giving such a clear explanation on why Burmese food hasn't broken through to the West like most all of the other countries in the same region. Very well-done; thanks again.

I am from an Indian state(Manipur) bordering Myanmar and I have tried some of their dishes and i can say that Burmese foods are exactly my type, very flavourful and more vegetable based. And I always make sure I bring back home some packaged Burmese foods specially the ingredients for la phet tho.
One thing we didn't have time to get to in this video is the Burmese vegan community in Bangkok. There are a small handful of Burmese vegan places/delivery outlets, mostly from the regions bordering India. Awesome stuff.

@@sanglunn He is most probably a native of Manipur. But there are some refugees which are nomadic tribes between Myanmar and Manipur and they roam the undemarcated jungle in the regions. They're the Kuki-Chin tribes. They're struggling to make their own identity by bringing many sub-tribe under main umbrella and form a new country.
I am a Myanmar student. I also would like to thank you for spreading the traditions of Myanmar and showing the real situation of our country. We would like everyone to know what is Myanmar and what is happening here. This is such an amazing video about our country. Watching from Australia. This brought a tear to my eye as a first generation Burmese- Australian. I just made a batch of Mohinga which I shared with my friends two days ago as I too wish that Burmese cuisine should gain the recognition it deserves. As a kid growing up in Myanmar and having moved to the States, I always wondered what stopped Myanmar and Burmese cuisine from breaking through like Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and many other southern and south east asian cuisines have in the West. I felt that the focus on savory over sweet would have translated really well to western pallets and this video does an amazing job detailing why Burma effectively fell off the map
I am from Myanmar and I cried three times while watching this. Thanks a million for recognizing and appreciating our Myanmar cuisine and for creating this incredible video. I can't even describe how much I'm proud of these foods. Like Chef GooGoo said, I also really want those three recipes to be famous all over the world. (Lat phet thoke, Shan Noodles and Mon-hin-ga) These are my favourite top three. Their taste is so balanced and really delicious and the constituents are incredibly nutritional. I wish the world people could taste them frequently.

As a person from Myanmar, I can say we were never hiding, whether in plain sight or otherwise. We just didn't try too hard to "stand out" like other countries who spend a good deal of money on marketing for tourism and foreign direct investment, etc. Thanks for making this video - you just helped us "stand out" a bit.
“We didn’t try too hard”? You wouldnt make it even if u try. You know why? First you don’t have the right attitude. I know you were talking about thailand mentioning the investment thing. We wouldnt make it if our cuisine were not that great. Second point is hospitality, burmese ppl dont smile and have zero to none service mind. Third, the cleanliness, even from burmese restaurant in the east village of manhattan to the local squat down si kyat down in latha most of the food in myanmar were being prepared in such a not hygienic conditions and almost alway served cold, not because it meant to serve that way but you guys dont even care to heat it up. You know why i know all of this I used to live in yangon and travelled across the country for a few years i know how often Burmeses eat and love thai food so dont pretend like your food didnt make it just because others try harder than you. Thats pathetic. Be proud of urself and next time be a good representation of ur own country. Oh btw most of the well known burmese cuisine were heavily influence by yunnan chinese, thai, and indian for example ong noh khaosoi the word khao means rice in thai and khao soi means noodle so make no mistake about that. Plus u might already know that shan ppl are closely related to thai ppl as they are tai yai ppl. I really appreciate how myanmar workers help us grow economically and i hope myanamr get back to normal asap.

Our first Burmese meal was a week ago here in Chiang Mai and it was exactly the same dishes as yours! And life changing. Such amazing unique flavours. We're off to Bangkok tomorrow so will have to check out some of the places you recommended. Maybe we'll see you around :).

I’m just an average American living in a culturally diverse city, and I am grateful that it has afforded me the opportunity to experience a wide range of cuisines and cultures. Fermented tea leaf salad is pretty well known here, and it’s incredibly addictive and delicious. You don’t always have to travel to every corner of the world to experience new foods, but you do need to be open minded and willing to try unfamiliar foods and flavors.

As a *Burmese* , I'm so glad you create this video and put the history behind food. Literally, everything related to Burmese are not recognized because of everything had and have been happening. It's indeed sad.
There are more than 130 ethic groups in Myanmar and we obviously have many kinds of food cuisines. Even mohinga has different versions in different areas. I like the Shan cuisine best. Currently craving for some Shan noodles❤

Such a beautiful video that I watched today. As a Burmese, I do also have same opinion like Ma Phyu or Guu Guu. I love to promote Burmese Foods as they are diverse and unique. We have different kinds of food for different meals as burmese people eat different food for different meals. I mean the food that we eat for each meal is different. For example, in the morning, we have variety of breakfast food such as Monhinga, sticky rice, fried rice and some Indian foods and tea but for lunch, we mostly eat rice and variety of curries. Dinner is also different based on each person's preference. I hope every people have a chance to try the real taste of Myanmar soon.
A great video to introduce Burmese cuisine to those who are not familiar with. Burmese cuisine has increasingly gain popularity in the US over the last 10 to 15 years, particularly the mohinga fish chowder with rice noodles paired with the ‘bothee kyaw’ and ‘kyethun kyaw’ opo gourd and sliced onion tempura fritters, and the laphet thoke fermented green tea leaf salad. My wife is from Myanmar and I have visited the country four times, and from my wife have learned to cook some Burmese dishes, such as the Burmese curries which were influenced by the Indian bhuna curries. I spent 2 months travelling around Thailand last year and my favourite meal of those 2 months was in a Burmese restaurant in Chiang Rai! All the Burmese food was incredible

As a Burmese myself (from the lower part of the country), I have never tried Shan warm tofu. Seeing you enjoying it so much makes me also craves for it. Now I'm officially on a mission to look for the best Shan restaurant in my area.

I had my first ever Burmese meal (a take on the coconut chicken noodles) in a meal delivery box in the UK called gousto, and I can't stop thinking about it ever since. I've since booked to go to a Burmese restaurant in London called Lahpet (the only one I can find) and ordered the "Burma superstar" cookbook. Would love to try more.
I've heard of that place in London- I think it's one of the restaurants where Goo Goo did an event.

Myanmar is a country full of traditional cultures and foods. However, Myanmar's politics is complicated. Some of Asian cultures of Vietnam and Thailand even came from Myanmar. Appreciate everything that encourages our country's informations. Just looking makes me hungry.

I'm very fortunate that both of the places where I most recently lived have been within walking distance of Burmese restaurants. Their cuisine is truly a hidden gem, blends the heartiness of Chinese cuisine with the spices of South and Southeast Asian cuisines.

I like the content and am glad to see someone interested in Myanmar food. In Myanmar, fermented Chinese cabbage is meant for Warm Tofu which is a common side dish in most Shan food. Moke Hnin Ngar normally eats with roasted chili powder, lime juice, and coriander.

Almost 15 years ago the first place I lived on my own was Gaithersburg, Maryland. There was a burmese restaurant there and I very clearly remember the pickled tea leaf salad. I ate it as often as I could which to be fair wasn't often because I was broke. I don't think I've seen a burmese restaurant in the US since but I have always wanted to learn more about it.
As a Burmese living abroad, your video made me to miss my home country Burma. Thank you so much for your video. I’m currently in UAE and there are few Burmese restaurants in Dubai anyhow comparing with other SEA restaurants, almost no one knows Burmese food. Thai and kabayan are really popular here. Whenever I try to explain what Burmese foods look like, I’m answered that it is like Chinese food. This is the most emotional part for me 😅. However this video can help me to explain how tasty and unique our Burmese food is.

I watched and I subscribed. Not because it is about Myanmar foods, just because Chefs told the truths about foods they had tried. Anyway, there are a lot to try because there are eight major ethnic groups in Myanmar. Each has its own culture, language and foods. So, I hope you can try and enjoy those foods some days. I'm not Burmese, just a guy hailing from city of Johor Bahru ( Malaysia) across neighbouring Singapore... Would have love to visit Yangon a couple of years ago... but then we knew what events happened since then..... There's a place in Singapore.... known as Peninsular Plaza ( dubbed Little Myanmar ) ..where there are many shops, restaurants and most businesses run by people from Myanmar..... I have tried the food before.... Mohinga, and as a foodie... I have to admit.... Food from Myanmar or Cambodia... which i have tried as well.. A little bit under the radar....Thanks for creating this vlog..... Glad I came across this .... Keep up the good work mate!!
Speaking of under the radar, Johor Baru doesn’t get any respect, and it’s a great place for food! Been there before and enjoyed it.
Absolutely fantastic video! It really touched my heart. Myanmar food is truly a must try. I really love the way the video is set up. And it includes not just food but portraying history, lifestyle and culture. Myanmar shouldn't be forgotten.
Love this! Just found out about you from Gary Butler's channel. + Just saw him eating fermented tea salad in his latest, just before seeing yours! Can't wait to go through your back log. Plenty of great "Thai Yai" (Myanmar) cuisine places in Chiang Mai. Look around the north of the moat. Goo-Goo is a hero(in)! + we can now see where "Khao Soi" really comes from!

I really need to get back to Chiang Mai...there's so much great stuff right in front of you (khao soi, khanom jeen...) that it's hard in a 3- or 4-day trip to really dive in to the outskirts of town and see everything the area has to offer. I need to get back up there, it's been too long.
Did you mean 'Thai Yai' from Myanmar? I want to correct that one as 'Tai'(Shan).But it kinda depend on speaking tone different.BTW 'Khao' mean 'Rice' and 'Soi' mean 'Slice' by translate by our language!
Burmese and Thai-yai Khoasoi version is a different from Thai version my friend a lot of people believed that this Thai food was created while got the influenced from the "Ho" people from chinese since the ancient time, in the past Thai people called this food "Kuay-teaw-Ho" which means noodle "Ho" style but nowadays Thai people called "Khaosoi"(wikipedia).
Tofu nway is Shan people’s delicacy and everyday breakfast. Everyone from Shan state has their own little corner stall for tofu nway and noodles. Tofu nway is originally from yunan province and brought it by Dai people to shan state. Till now most of the stalls in northern shan state still making it the same way like the original region , still using dry green peas ,while the rest of the country uses chickpeas.
Oh a small correction; Dai people are also Shan people. Shan people call themselves Tai and Dai is a chinese corruption of the word.

burma is in the middles of those three countries so we have both our authentic dishes plus a fusion of food from all these countries and thank u so much for touching the situation in myanmar, couldnt thank u enough for that, people only knew about ukraine and we are still in the dark, receiving not much support like elsewhere
