    I'm 13 but I was diagnosed with Tourette's at around 10.
I have trigger words and phrases (when someone says Atlanta I have to say Hot Lanta). I have a type of screeching sound that most people say sounds more like a teapot, and because of this sound my old school teacher told me I need to knock it off and be quiet. This, along with other students following in what she said, had me crying most days. Now I homeschool and am surrounded by very supportive family and friends. We actually think it pretty cool! Thank you for sharing this information with people! Hopefully more people will start to understand that it is uncontrollable and sometimes uncomfortable, but it's nothing for anyone to be ashamed of!

Oh my god. Never tell your trigger words to anybody. I dont suffer from that but I sure as hell would just chant Atlanta if I knew I'd 100% get a response. Just the thought of it is hilarious. Please dont divulge that on the Internet.

I have Tourette’s syndrome actually but what’s weird is that my Tourette’s only starts acting up when I have too much of a stimulant (like caffeine or sugar) the I was able to find out about it is because when I was in kindergarten my doctor put me on this stuff to help me with my ADD (yes I have ADD too) and for seemingly no reason I started twisting my arms constantly, and the teacher did nothing, it actually took three days before my family actually saw what was happening. Thankfully I was off that medication a day later and my Tourette’s hasn’t acted up since

Mine was induced by anxiety more than anything else. I struggle with anxiety and depression, and have been since I was a little kid, but it doesn't manifest that way anymore. A huge part of it improving was getting really into music and wanting to learn all the lyrics to very complicated rap songs. The more confidence I had in my ability to speak, the less I stuttered. I still have a very mild one, but most people don't notice. I also hear that speech pathologists help with stutters as well, although I never went to one myself.
For those of you curious about my age, I'm 20. I still talk about the bullying I had when I was a little kid with my therapist. Stutter is mostly gone, but I have a host of other problems, mainly because of the way I've been treated by others.

I have a pretty severe case of Tourette’s. Since I can remember, I’ve always had mild chills that’d pop up unexpectedly, but I wasn’t cold or scared or anything. This persisted for a while until I entered high school and I saw things like kicking, biting, falling over, etc. My parents were super confused and, obviously, concerned, so they set up an appointment with a psychiatrist for me. Funnily enough, a week before the appointment, my friends were joking about some character called the “Tourette’s guy” who’d swear at random intervals, but I kinda shrugged it off. Once I had my appointment, the doctor said she suspected I had Tourette’s. It all went down the drain from there. My tics got so bad that I had to be put into online school, which sent me down into a spiral of loneliness and, eventually, depression. I was prescribed tons of meds over the year just to see what would actually work. Some of them made my life a nightmare, like the one that made my anxiety skyrocket or the one that lowered my blood pressure so much that I couldn’t get up at times, and others had little to no effect. I was sent to two mental hospitals, the first of which had some staff that totally disrespected me (e.g. yelling at me for throwing things,) and the second of which was where I was at the pinnacle of depravity. However, that one seemed to get me slightly back on my feet, especially because of the amount of social interaction I had compared to next to none. I returned to regular schooling sophomore year, which still showed some effects of my disorders- I would often have to go home early because of my tics, I was highly unmotivated, I was stressed by the amount of content I missed and had to make up, and I got associated with some bad people. However, I continued to get treatment via therapy and meds, and with the help of supportive family and friends alongside those two things, I saw enormous improvement junior year. I still had to go home from time to time, and I had a pretty bad tic fit that resulted in the people my German class (minus the teacher of course) avoiding me at all costs, but I rekindled old friendships and made new ones and eventually minimized tics. I’m now a senior, and my tics only ever come out when mentioned or when I’m really stressed or anxious. My life may be a bit behind what it could’ve been, but I feel like I’m pretty much back on track, whereas I thought it was hopeless freshman year. I’m happy that I had all the support and resources to get better, but I realized that there must be tons of people out there that haven’t had that. One day I hope that I’ll be able to help those people lower their tics and feel loved and supported. I suck at actually concluding anything, so I’ll leave with a message:
    Don’t ever give up.

I was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome when I was thirteen, however, I have never had tics before then so the people around me were very confused. A couple of months before I had shown symptoms of Tourettes, I had been watching videos about it and my family thought I was copying them. It was so hard to explain to them that I couldn't help it but no one believed me and there are some family members who don't but as long as some people believe me that's ok. School is terrible, I am being made fun of for something I cannot control and people always tell me to keep still or quiet but I have not told anyone because I don't want them to know. I now have the "great" nicknames of "twitchy" and "seizure girl" (Because apparently when I have multiple tics at once it looks like a seizure according to people at school) Anyways that's my story blehhh.

I’ve had a few tic outbursts lately, it happens out of nowhere! Even my parents thought I was joking, they don’t care that I’m always blinking and head flopping. Sometimes when I write poems or draw it seems to calm down, it also doesn’t affect me when I’m extremely calm yet it does act up when I get mad or embarrassed. It depends on what mood I’m in. I hate it when people think I’m just faking and trying to get attention, that’s the total opposite of what I want I’m an introvert I don’t want strangers laughing at me. I do believe I have Tourette’s because I have a few motor tics and a lot of vocal tics, but my parents don’t take me to the doctor to see if I actually have Tourette’s or it’s just a nervous tic.

    • @snazzyferret4971
      @snazzyferret4971 Před 5 lety

It doesent seem like you have tourette's. In order to have it, you must have vocal AND motor tics for over a year. These could just be muscle spasms, or a simple tic dissorder. As long as you dont develope any more tics, I dont think its necessary to see a doctor, unless they begin causing unbearable pain.

@@audreydoyle5268 yeah I dont know how I skipped over that unless they edited it or maybe I'm just dumb lol. But yes, you are correct. Reading it now, this is alot like my experience so it could definetly be tourettes. I know a few people who had motor and vocal tics for a while, but eventually one or the other faded out and it turned out to be just a tic disorder. That's usually why I say that could be a solution before they jump to conclusions that they have tourrettes lol.

As someone with moderate Tourette's that involves copralalia, I wish people knew that I HATE my inappropriate tics. I didn't start having them until two years after I started having tics, and I was so glad that I didn't have it and assumed I never would. It's so stressful because most people overhear me and don't know who I am, so they assume that I'm okay with the words I'm saying. The first time I said the N-word in public- in the lobby of my school no less- was preceded 10 minutes of trying desperately not to, and followed by a small panic attack, even though the friends I was talking with tried to reassure me that they weren't upset with me. I still try not to say it in front of my friends, and I apologise every time, because I feel guilty about it. I'm terrified of something going wrong when I meet people.
I also want people to know that as much as I hate copralalia, it's not the worst tic I have. The worst tics I've ever had compel me to punch and slap my own chest, face, and head, or to bite the inside of my mouth really hard. Others compel me to twist my body into painful positions, or to rapidly repeat a movement dozens of times or for several minutes. I've been known to give myself whiplash from jerking my neck so hard. Still others compel me to go completely still. It's not very common anymore, but when I was 14 or 15 it wasn't unusual for me to suddenly have the need to stand or sit completely still with my head tilted all the way back, or even lie on the floor unmoving- unable to even move my mouth to speak. It doesn't sound so bad until you have work you need to get done, or you're walking in public, or you're on the side of the road. Then it's dangerous. Which is why I'm glad I don't have it much.
Moderate and severe cases of Tourette's aren't funny. It's not my excuse to say what I want or get out of things. I'm lucky to be doing better now than I was a few years ago, but believe me when I say that at its worst, it was a living nightmare.

Helping Hand I don't think I'd ever go for DBS. It's an invasive procedures that isn't guaranteed to work, and I don't feel my case warrants that. Besides, I haven't really explored many medications, which I'd want to try first.
My mom doesn't believe my Tourette's is real, so in order to avoid making her angry, I sort of taught myself the techniques they teach you in CBIT so that I could have more control. Substitution, competing actions, and a few other tricks of my own, like breathing techniques, visualization, and Deep Pressure Therapy. Also, I have a fidget cube that I love. It all works pretty well. I've suppressed all my tics for well over an hour in the past, though at that point I'm really uncomfortable and it's impossible to focus on anything else.
The copralalia is still an issue right now, but the tics that cause me actual pain aren't nearly as common as they used to be. Every now and again I might hit myself, but it's kind of just a random thing every couple months or so that doesn't last very long. The ones where I go still barely happen at all. I've had maybe one or two in the past 6 months.
It's nice to find people who get it.

My nephew started having lots of verbal tics when he was 7-8 yrs old. It was really bad. He would yell swear words during class and at home at his parents. He spent a week at my house during the summer since his parents were busy and needed a break. Looking back on it I was a really bad aunt. He'd yell swear words or just make loud vocalizations repeatedly, and though I knew he didn't do it on purpose, it got too much for me to handle. I started to scold him and I feel so bad for it now. One occasion he was looking out an open window and started yelling profanity at our neighbors. I was so angry I pushed him aside and scolded him. I feel terrible about it now :(

There aren't many specialists in our area that deals with Tourette but we did manage to get on a 4 month waitlist to see someone for it. They pretty much just said "We'll wait to see if he grows out of it" and he did for the most part.
It's easier said than done, dealing with a loved one who has Tourettes. Very easy to get frustrated and overwhelmed, even if you think of yourself as a patient person. Its not as easy as one would think. I can empathize with families who have a hard time dealing with Tourette since I have dealt with it myself.

Teanna Hairston oh my god, calm down. Just because she got overwhelmed, which is incredibly easy to do, that doesn’t make her a bad person. She’s realized her mistakes and she even admitted to those mistakes in her original comment. You shouldn’t be so quick to judge, as your comment is extremely hypocritical and selfish.

How would you feel if your nephew started spitting out uncontrollable curse words? It’s not nearly as simple as you’re making it out to be.

I have Tourette syndrome. If I have not exercised hard enough for a long time my tics are allot worse. The shoulder shrugging en vocal tics are honestly minor things. Tourette syndrome affects personality in a huge way especially when people don't accept you. And for someone like myself with the syndrome to feel like we are just good enough to be thrown into the dumpster are really painful. Normally I see how girls really like me allot, but once I start opening up my syndrome starts to affect my personality and I very quickly see how they don't accept me. Best way to describe it is the tics are like itches. If you don't scratch the itch it will keep on itching till you scratch it and when you do scratch it, it gives relief. The same happens for me in me in my personality when it comes to liking or loving someone. I keep on feeling like I need to get the affection and very soon it gives the impression that I am needy or clingy. Only a person having tourette syndrome can fully understand the struggles.

I haven’t been diagnosed with tourette syndrome yet, but I had tics for years now. My common tics are head jerking, facial movements (Only if I am not occupied with something and in a distress state), and eye rolling. It does not repeat itself continuously for an exaggerated amount of time and I can manage to control the urge of having tics. I’m 21 and I’m just worried by the fact that it can get worse (Please, I hope not). The only thing that helps me right now is relaxing myself and not putting too much bad stress into my mind.
I didn’t have to worry about my tics whenever I’m at school mainly because I am preoccupied with a lot of things and my brain is focusing on all sort of school stuff, but since we are on an epidemic, school has been cancelled that is why I think I am noticing my tics more.
I am practicing myself to be in control. I guess if I let it be then it can get worse. I hope to those people similar to my experience, we can all get through this with a positive mind and heart. Always look forward to happiness and positivity. 😌💕

I am 17 years old, and my Tourette Syndrome was a thing that was diagnosed back in 2017, but really took off during the fall of 2019. Some of my first tics were a grunting noise and shoulder shrugging. I've had 2 that have been harmful to me since I've been diagnosed. One was where I would breath in and out very rapidly, as if hyperventilating, and the other one was where I would jab my elbow backwards very hard, and it started to pull on my muscles in my shoulder, which, if they were broken, would be almost impossible to repair. Luckily, I didn't care about what people thought about me, and it would of been fine, but that's where my anxiety comes in.
I tell you, Tourette Syndrome and Anxiety are super effective in making you fear everything to the point you don't want to be near anyone for as long as you can. My anxiety told me that everyone was watching me, and I was constantly out of class to escape. The anxiety made me worried, which made me tic more, which then made me worry even more, and when you add Depression and ADHD along with the fact that I barely slept because of my insomnia, it was a vicious cycle that I never could see myself escaping. Thankfully, I had parents that were there to support me, as well as people at school. Other than my tourette syndrome, I was a fairly quiet kid that just did what they were told and didn't argue, and I was generally liked by my teachers. Today, I only have three tics that happen often, all of which have no preemptive feelings to, so they can not be treated. Luckily, none of them are harmful. That's my story with Tourette Syndrome, and although this video is almost 3 years old now, I just thought that now would be as good of a time as ever to tell about it, since I don't think that this is something that will go away with time, and may be something I have while being an adult.

    1. I want to say thank you for covering Tourette syndrome it really means a lot to me
    2. I feel like it should have been impotent to mention that Tourette syndrome is categorize by 2 or more motor and 1 or more vocal tics. If you only have motor then it could be chronic motor tic disorder, and vice versa with vocal. Another important thing to mention is that some people with tourette's have Echophilia (I could have spelt that wrong sorry) that causes people to repeat and copy other people.
    3. This ep really means a lot to me due to lack of people talking about Tourette syndrome. It can be hard doing things and going places with Tourette and a lot of times I find its easier if more awareness is spread. There are days were I hate being out in public because I yell random things like 'No No No! Fish!' 'No zucchini for Beethoven' and other strange things while my head jerks or another motor tic has it's way. I often get my vocal tics compare to the sound of a dog if they aren't words and my motor tics can leave me unable to walk because my legs will start kicking or give out on me. (I'm normally on meds so for most parts I can get around my day with people noticing I have Tourette's but every now and again I still have bad tic days)it also sucks that every time at the beginning of a school year I had to explain I have Tourette syndrome. Having more awareness and clearing up negative stigma would allow me not to have to worry about trying to explain to every new person I met 'hey I have Tourette.' So again thank you for spreading a bit more awareness.

These comments make me smile, knowing how many others also deal with some form of this is comforting. I'm 27 and have been dealing with simple tics since i was 5 years old (long time). Have never been diagnosed. First it was tensing my neck and tilting my head up. Then it was scrunching my nose. Then it became blinking excessively. Now it's a relentless twitching in my left eye, accompanied by opening and closing my throat. All of these lasted years before morphing into something else. Some years better than others. There was a time when I felt I had finally gotten rid of them. Still dealing with it. For anyone out there who's young and still figuring this out, self medicating does NOT work. Don't try to doctor it yourself. Reach out and ask for help/support.

I have Tourettes, but I know a lot of people have it worse. For me, I only get ticks in my head/face. I used to have a painful tic where I turn my head really fast. I get a lot of vocal tics and those are slightly harder to control. The last kind of tic I get is in my throat (since tourettes can literally be the uncontrollable movement of ANY muscle) and that tic I have I don't know how, but it causes my sinuses to drain and it's really annoying bc it makes my throat burn and then I drink like 2-3 gallons of water a day. In my case, it is fairly manageble compared to other cases and I'm thankful for that, I also want to say that each tic isn't controllable at all. Tic's aren't like "tremurs" (IDK if I'm pronouncing that right but that thing people have with parkinson's disease) It's more like if someone threw a baseball at your face, your gonna move whether you want to or not.

I used to have Tourette Syndrome for over 13 years. I consider myself to be extremely lucky, because all my symptoms did eventually disappear. Something that still frustrates me to this day, is that most people only associate Tourette Syndrome with people who are uncontrollably swearing. I had self-harming tics, that made me bite small flesh chunks out of my lips, which was really painful. Most people started to see me as a cripple, once I told them, that I have Tourette Syndrome. Telling people about my disease never helped me, it only made things worse for me. Most kids in my school laughed about my tics, which destroyed my self-esteem and my self-respect. I began to see myself as "not normal“ and started to isolate myself from society, which made school life even more tough for me. Even though I don‘t have Tourette symptoms anymore, I still struggle to rebuild my life. After all these years of being bullied and mistreated, I find it extremely difficult to meet new people, because I don‘t feel comfortable around people anymore.

I just explained to them what was wrong and helped them understand I’m just the same as anyone else. I am 20 now and i still take medication to help control my tics. I can say for sure though since i was a child my symptoms have improved massively. I can now feel when i want to move and hold it back for the most part. Without my medicine I have mostly head jerking. Sometimes i bark but hey it’s not all that bad. I have had a supportive and caring family throughout my life and I’m glad they helped me through any stress and depression from being bullied growing up.

I am a part of the rare group where I won't grow out of it and have tried all the possible medications. Because of that, I am left with the implanting of a brain device for a chance at normalcy. Hi all. I was diagnosed with TS back in '91 when things (at least in my area) were poorly understood. I have seen a lot of change in the general acceptance of TS over the years and hopefully it will continue to become less of an isolating factor. It's a challenge, no simple way around the fact. I do know that it made me who I am today through trial by fire, and I'm not all the way sure I'd take it back. For those currently dealing with the disorder, either personally or surrounding a loved one, take care and let the patience build over time for all the ups and downs that come with it. It's been 30 years so far for me, and I work alongside it daily, but having people to talk to about it sure does help.

Tourettes made my early and pre teen years hell, ticks were crappy and the surrounding conditions that came with it made it very hard to fit in. But as I've gotten older its faded and I feel like I'm better for it, I've learnt to be more sympathetic to those with disabilities and also it has Inca roundabout way given me a very positive outlook on life

  • @Jadys_

I was diagnosed with Tourettes at about 12 years old and I found that people around me being informed was a huge deal. I had both motoric and vocal tics (No words, mainly noises like chirping, growling, etc) but no-one knew why it was happening, myself included so I was an easy target for bullying since I was the weird kid. But once i got my diagnosis, my mother signed us up with the Norwegian Tourettes union (Not sure if that's the correct term) and they sent us information brochures and such to be handed out to teachers, etc. Once the people around me became aware of why I was doing the things I was doing, the bullying pretty much stopped.
If any parents of a kid with Tourettes reads this comment, get the people around your kid informed. It will make your kid's life so much easier. And if you have a union for it in your country like we do here, sign up. When I was about 16 they arranged a weekend for teens with Tourettes and if you don't know anyone around you who has Tourettes, it's a huge deal for a kid to be able to go and meet other people with the same condition.

I am pretty sure I’ll have mine for the rest of my life. If you know somebody with tourette’s, the BEST thing you can do for them is tell them it’s okay to do their tics around you and your family. I go too far just to avoid doing my tics because I never did my tics around my girlfriend’s family, but now it has been three years and my tics are worse than before. And I’m kinda scared to go to school because I don’t know if the other kids are going to make fun of me for it or not….sometimes in the past when my tics would come out all the other kids would say: “what are you doing?”or “can you stop it’s weird” and I would say “o-oh it’s just my Tourette’s/tics” and soon they would say: “what even is Tourette’s?”or “what are tics?” And…..I would always say: “I don’t know”……and most times when it’s night and I’m at home I start to think about my Tourette’s and……it gives me an tiny….anxiety attack…but soon my cat Marley 🐈‍⬛ would come up to me as I’m crying and soon……I feel better ❤️‍🩹 and most times when I’m with her or my two other pets I feel……connected ❤️ kind of like…our souls are connected in a way…..and now I mostly have tics like: shaking my foot, sniffling a lot, or holding all my muscles……most of my life I’ve wondered: “why?….why was i born this way?” But sometimes to help with my tics I draw or sing! ❤️ 🎶 🖌 and my fav singer is Billie Eilish ❤️ me seeing how for that she got to where she is it…maid me feel…..stronger and to help Control my tics I have to take a pill in the morning and in the Afternoon Anyways that’s my story bye ✌️

I have Tourrette Syndrome. For those who don’t know why we do it, let me try and explain it in a way. Do you feel like you have an urge to scratch an itchy area? Yeah thats what we feel! I have both vocal and motor tics. So its like, I have the urge to grunt or i have the urge to shrug my shoulders. Its actually something that makes me look like an idiot or a clown. So I often try and stop myself from doing the tics. I try so hard but I just can’t stop it! Okay so. Try and not blink for 1 hour. Do you have the urge to blink? Yeah. Its something that us,the people who are diagnosed with tourrettes, have. So. My only thing to say is, if u have tourrette syndrome and u dont wanna be embarrased, dont force yourself to not do the tic. If people start telling you to stop it because its annoying, tell them “do you have a strong urge to scratch an itchy area? Yeah! You Do! I have tourrette syndrome. It something that makes me have the urge to do or say something weird. It’s something that I have to deal with okay! I always get comments like what you said to me. You may not know how it feels like. Just know that me and other people with tourrette syndrome have to go through this our entire lives,” Anyways I’m Just 12 Years Old. Hopefully people without tourrette syndrome who are reading this will know what we have to go through. So please try and understand that some of us have tourrettes. I got Tourette's in the fourth grade so I was around 7 1/2 and 8 and at the time I thought it was normal since my tics were so rare. When I entered high school they started showing up more often and when I started sec 3 (or 9th grade) they got so bad to the point where I developed 5 new tics. The reason for this is because when I started high school I started getting a lot of panic attacks and was very anxious all the time. My mother and I talked to our doctor and referred us to a psychologist who said I has severe generalized anxiety and severe social anxiety, PTSD and 1 or 2 more that he couldn't quite pin down. So when my tics started to increase in severity I looked up why I kept twitching and most of the results I got were that I suffered from substance abuse or had too much caffeine but yk I'm 14 and have never had any of those problems. I never mentioned this before to my family because they don't really believe in mental illness and always told me that it was all in my head and the fact that my anxiety subconsciously held back all the tics I had in public and I basically exploded when I was alone. And for those who may be wondering my motor tics consist of: head, shoulder, hands, arms, back and neck twitching that can happen by themselves, with one another or all at the same time. I also get face pulling and I scrunch my nose or lift my lip. I only have 1 vocal tic and its a brrrrraaaaaaauuhh sounds while I twitch but it doesn't happen very often. Thanks for reading

All of this happens without me even realizing that I’m doing it until either someone points it out or I notice people giving me weird looks.
