Thank you very much for excellent advice! I already had my Sony MDR-1AM2 (more warm & bassy sound signature) for 6 months when I first saw your review.. Straight away bought the MSR7b - beautifully sounding headphones, nice & clear mid-range with extended treble but not harsh and enough bass.. Complements my Sony along the sound spectrum.. And both have 4.4mm balanced port & extra cable.. What unbeatable combination in USD250 price range!

Just got the MSR7 yesterday here in Australia for an amazing deal. $150AUD (equivalent to about $104USD) with an additional 2 years replacement warranty. Considering that the MSR7B isn't a drastic upgrade from the MSR7, and the price I paid, I think I got myself a steal. Absolutely love the clarity on them.

JB HiFi had all of their MSR7s on clearance for $249 (possibly because no one buys them, due to the popularity of the M50X). On top of that they had a 40% off on the ticketed price of all Audio Technica headphones, so the salesperson I spoke to said he can bring down the price for me to $150. I asked for an even better deal, but he couldn't bring the price down anymore, but could thrown in an extra 2yr replacement warranty. That's how I got it. When shopping at JB HiFi, always try to ask for a deal. They're quite lenient about it :)

I own a pair of the MSR7 for now almost two years and they`re my main driver on daily basis. The sound is suberb, | just love it. Whatever I throw at them...Liquid Tension Experiment`s Acid Rain...Porcupine Tree`s Even Less...A Perfect Circle`s Judith...Mastodon`s A Word To The Wise...it handles all those songs with a wide sound stage and a clearity I`ve never experienced before. I mean especially Acid Rain turns the sound of many cans in a muddy bass fest, robbing it of all the song`s detail.
But I think we all know what AT has delivered with the MSR7. The only pain with them I had, was the in the video mentioned plasticy noise while just even touching them. After some digging I just opened the cans (which is quite easy, you just need to be gentle with some of the plastic parts holding the wole system together) and put some silicone grease in there and this annoying sound is just gone...for more than 18 months. Sure, would`ve been better without the sound occuring in the first place, but it seems to be a design flaw with the original MSR7.

The reason the Audio Technica MSR-7 is not as popular as the M50 / M50X is (besides the fame and name the M50/x garnered a few years ago) because they're like double or at least 1.50x the price of the M50/x ($100-$130 VS $200 - $230) and because the MSR7 reveal even more than the M50/x. This means the MSR7 has an even flatter response which makes them less "fun" and more critical. This means the MSR7 is even better for audio production/editing but not necessarily always as good for your casual listener as very critical, high-end headphones can be quite fatiguing especially since you'll hear every little hiss, crackle, pop, and imperfection in your audio sources. The better headphones aren't always better for all scenarios and listener types. Many casual people may find the MSR7 to be flat, boring, fatiguing, and harsh because they're so damn good.

Go listen to a MSR7 yourself. It's not as critical sounding as you think. If anything, m50x have a peak at treble range. Btw if a headphone is harsh and fatiguing, it will never be flat.

    JRiver MC24
I A/B'd the MSR7 and MSR7b over the course of two weeks, wrapping up yesterday.
I know my opinion will likely be in the minority, but I had ample opportunity to test each headphone for extended periods of 3 hours or more as well as A/B them for compare and contrast.
First off, the obvious and glaring difference between the MSR7 and the MSR7b, and main selling feature, is that the "b" version has the balanced option (which I didn't test), ever so slightly better bass extension and slightly less treble at flat EQ than the previous version and just a tad better sound stage. That might be exactly what you want if you listen to flat EQ media consistently.
I personally like to conform the sound to my preference. A little more low bass volume and small tweaks to the high end depending on how the recording was mixed and mastered.
So with that said, the problem I have with the MSR7b is that when you EQ to taste, and drive it fairly hard with a headphone amplifier, it falters with audible distortion. The original MSR7 has no such problem,.
The original version has greater bass extension at higher volumes without distorting, and responds better to EQ before reaching audible distortion. The MSR7 can be driven louder and with more deep bass (40hz and below), yet still provide fantastic separation between the lows, mids and highs. The MSR7 is analytical, yet listenable for long periods of time and over multiple genres.
In my setup, a -2dB drop at 2khz takes any forwardness out of these reference quality monitor headphones that might otherwise be just a tad bit "bright" and revealing.
The best thing about the MSR7 (either version), and what makes them high-resolution and worthy of "reference" status, is that you'll hear maraca's, bells, triangles, high-hat ghost notes and the zing of crash and ride cymbals you didn't even know were in the song. You'll hear the finger and pick attack on bass notes that are otherwise indistinguishable on lesser cans.
And you'll hear the room reverb and 3D depth of well recorded drums that you didn't realize were buried in the mix.
The headband may indeed be slightly more comfortable on the MSR7b, but the ear-cushions on the MSR7 were a little deeper and held their form better once on your head, to keep your ears from bottoming out on the speaker. At least on my set.
I went back and forth with these trying to convince myself that the newer "b" version must be better than the original, but every listen just confirmed what I felt and heard within the first 5 minutes of critical listening. The MSR7 just outperforms the MSR7b.
I also have a set of Audio Technica ATH-50's. The original version, not the new "X" version.
By way of comparison, the 50's are far more neutral, flat and rather boring. They do produce more bass at flat EQ, but the race tightens when you bump the 60hz and lower sliders up a couple dB. At least regarding bass quality.
That's where the contest ends though as the 50's simply cannot match the high end detail of the MSR7's.
The reduced performance of the MSR7b does make me wonder what exactly was cut out of the new version to reduce the overall weight of the headphones in the name of comfort?
Not only is the MSR7 far less expensive than it's newer sibling today, but to me, it simply sounds better and is more versatile.
I know there will always be slight differences in the sound of one speaker to another, even with identical design and production standards. Maybe I received a great set of MSR7's and a not so great set of MSR7b's?
IMO, If you listen at lower volumes, aren't concerned with the lowest bass and leave your EQ flat, you'll be happy with the MRS7b. It does sound good within those constraints. I don't think it adds anything new to the equation to justify rather large difference in price between the two. For me obviously, the MSR7 won the day.

I have the MSR7b for about 2 months. I use the balanced cable with Fiio Q5s. Tried them many times on high power, also EQed with Winamp on PC - hard boost on 31.5 Hz. But haven't noticed any distortion. Maybe I should do some hard tests on the 3.5 mm cable?

Why do people always call neutral headphones boring? After all, neutral headphones don't lower any frequency in particular so they always play the music pretty much as it was intended. I could think of a few reasons, but maybe the music people always listen to is not that great (I actually know this for a fact, when I see which videos have the most views).
After you get neck-deep into really good music, then and only then you will truly appreciate a neutral headphone, since it reveals the full frequency range overshadowing anything.

Thanks for the very good review!. You are completely right in your comment about audiophiles below. Yesterday I read another review of these HP that stated that they have more bass and more recessed highs, 🤔. I have DT 770 pro, ATH MsR7, Hifiman 4xx and just ordered the Sennheiser 6xx. I overall agree with your opinion about 770 and ATHs, including the awful “creeking” of the Aths earpads, which is quite annoying. The only thing that I don’t like about then MSR7 is the lack of a more punchy bass, but I solved it with a very simple and unexpensive solution: a tiny amplifier with bass boost called Fiio A1.
I don’t fully agree about the isolation provided by the MsR7, which I found poor. I travel a lot and after the first flight I realized that the MSR7 (and also 770s) are not fit serve for this purpose.. For domestic use the MSR7 are Ok, but for more noisy environments You need real active noise cancelling HPs. I have the Sony MDR-1000x and I’m very happy with them. Thanks again for your nice review.

I just got the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms, and I also compared them against other highly-regarded headphones: The AKG K-361, DT 700 Pro X, DT 770 Pro X LE, Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, and a couple of cheaper options just in case. They were the best in almost all categories! The other Beyers came the closest. In comparison:
    - The DT 700 Pro X had more pleasant mids and less of a bump in the bass, but lacked soundstage, upper treble sparkle, and a bit of detail
    - The DT 770 Pro X had similar mids to the 700 Pro X, but too recessed because of pushed sub bass and sharp treble. Its soundstage was almost on par with the regular DT 770 Pro
    - The AKG K-361 were a bit more even from bass to the mids, but lacked a bit of air, soundstage, and physicality in the bass. Also, the upper mids could get a bit too much at times
The others didn't come close, although I can see why people love the HD 280 Pro. It's very analytical, but it's just not fun to listen to.
When looking for headphones that could tick _all_ the boxes, I stumbled over the ATH-MSR7b. From what you describe, I think I would love it as well! But they're discontinued now. If you find them, they are much more expensive than the DT 770 Pro, and they don't seem as sturdy and not really repairable. That's one _major_ benefit of many Beyerdynamic headphones imho. So I'll get used to the slight unevenness of the DT 770 Pro. If I want a flat response and maximum detail, I still have the DT 880 Edition 600 Ohms.

The market niche for M50X sound signature is an entirely different market segment from gamers, rappers, DJs but please they are not absolute garbage - read the specs on the frequency response test dataset. MSR7 BT version if they would have in the future will be the figure of merit for fidelity. They have to be on an equalizer output from a high res audio player if you want the base.

But anyway you got a nice deal for that headphone. i payed 220 euros for it. was still 20 euros cheaper then anywhere else in the netherlands. some retailers even sold it for 300 euros. so in that case i still got a pretty good deal. But anyway we both cant complain about the MSR7b. amazing headphones. I normally am a sennheiser fanboy. but this cans blue me away. cant say i regret spending money on it.

I have a msr7 and I had some problems with the pads that get damaged very quickly, the plastic material against the ear don’t keep the good shape. The materrial used on the earpads could get worn off and starting to irritate the skin so I had to replace it with a red earpads and looks amazing with it and sound wasn't changed fortunately :D As for bass, it's just perfect... I think a lot of your disappointment is from lack of power, or an amplifier that does not work well with these headphones. I like the Liquid Spark for its price. I use a Liquid Carbon X and Sabaj D5 daily But my Beyerdynamics and Sennheisers are very boring without some power behind them. The dt 1770 and 58x jubilees in particular do not extend well into the sub bass without some power. I have been far more interested in bass extension over bass humps. My LCD 2s are flat as a board in bass but with power the slam is physical in nature and still very detailed.
But I do cheat a little with them and put a 3db shelf in bass/sub bass area. My DT 1770s have way more bass even well into the sub bass region but little to no physical feeling or "slam" My Jubilees however do in-fact have slam with the right amplifier Sennheiser 600-650-580 series seem to like tube amps and the Beyers sound great on them too. I was confused about what you were hearing and thats the only thing that makes sense to me.
