    What is so beautifully and terrifyingly depicted in Homelander is one side of him being a psychopathic monster of a being, and he is fully aware of his actions it seems. Another side is him seeming to be just a broken child in a man's body wanting someone to truly love him, and him wanting the best for his child. A chaotic mix is seen inside Homelander that makes you wonder if he is a mentally broken child, or a nightmarish megalomaniac that has nobody go control him. Or possibly both? That is what makes him one of my favorite characters of all time. Sadly, there is so many other things I don't have the time or energy to write about why I love him.

      As someone who grew up in a crappy way and would give my very soul make sure that my children go through the exact opposite of what was done to me, I'm inclined to agree with you relatively speaking, but I also had to do a hell of a lot of work on my own in order to figure out how take all the darkness inside and start blazing it into light rather than let it consume me, and that's not an easy thing to do. I'd even say that certain circumstances that happened later in my life are what truly forced me into a period of self-reflection and re-evaluation. Not everyone has that, and not everyone is wired that way or has the appropriate perspectives and experiences to do that.
      Basically I'm trying to tell you that it's not a foolproof idea, and that we should genuinely and sincerely make sure that all of our children have what they need. Because someone who was raised right and lovingly will also be an amazing parent. Only difference is that they will know what to do, rather than someone who was raised wrong and managed to turn it around, who would instead know exactly what *not* to do.

According to Vogelbaum, Homelander was very sweet when he was a child, he wasn't evil since birth, he was longing for a family since childhood and Vought snatched it away from him. Hence this scene.

I think this is a reflection of everything Homelander wanted when he was Ryan’s age; someone who loved him for him and would never leave no matter what. It would be a beautiful moment were it not for the circumstances. But it seems as though he’s trying to give Ryan what he never had; family.

      Homelander may love his son but that doesn’t excuse the fact that he brutally murders people with no remorse and has no regard for human life lmfaoo
      Also this scene may seem sweet at first but it’s more sinister when you look into it. By homelander making the killing of becca seem like not a big deal/ not that serious, and by him saying “sometimes things break”, he is teaching Ryan that the killing of regular humans is nothing more than collateral damage/ a harmless accident, and it’s nothing Ryan him to worry about. He’s essentially teaching Ryan to view people like objects that “break” in this scene.
      This is just shown further in the final scene in the season where Ryan does not care, and is even pleased, when homelander straight up brutally murders a guy in front of him lmfaoo

    It really gets you that Homelander was being 100% honest in this scene. The only difference between him and Butcher, and the reasons that Butcher was never and will never say these words (that Ryan needed to hear) are that 1) He didn’t care about Becca. And 2) He feels no guilt or responsibility for the things he does or the times he loses control of his powers, and he wants Ryan to be like that too, except Ryan should feel responsible, otherwise he won’t be careful and more “accidents” will happen

  • @DraculaOnFentanyl
    @DraculaOnFentanyl Před rokem +90

    After season 3 seeing Homelander's own mental battles and shifts in stability, it is very obvious he cares for Ryan, but he also is seemingly very self aware of his own failure and is wanting to make Ryan as strong as him but also better than him. The mirror scene more than anything shows this. Homelander trying to retain even the smallest bit of humanity, and his more narcissistic side tries to make him push away humanity and accept the distorted societal view of him being the "perfect being". Hopefully we can see HL's and Ryan's relationship progress and maybe even have Ryan humanize him bit by bit until maybe some redemption or true realization hits. Even if he is very much a villain, he still has shreds of humanity, but he's still likely past the point of redemption.
