- Very small 4 point show out of Cobb Ga on 08/30/23. Ever wondered how threatre rigging is set up? Well lets watch as Travis out of Atlanta gives us a tour. Apologies, in the video we reference the yellow ribbons that you walk on as battens, just know those yellow slits are called ribbons not battens.
had a 5l bottle of haze fluid dropped on my shoulder from a 3rd story gantry in a gap between shows while mixing monitors once 8 years back.still causes pain till this day still work audio/lighting/fly op but my rigging licence expired and i stopped chasing that side of the industry, thanks for a great video.
Sorry to hear brother, glad to see you are still in the industry though!
is a passion more than anything don't think anything would keep me out @@worldwiderigging
The theater at my high school back in 2007-2008 had a fly house like that and I remember rigging and working curtains. I miss doing that stuff sometimes. I will say the Bridge was way scarier to me than the fly house and walking on the ribbons. The bridge we had was over the seating area and was nothing more than a catwalk suspended by wire above the drywall ceiling. made me sweaty every time.
Yes, they definitely get some getting used to! Hey it’s never too late to get back into the life !
I know literally nothing about rigging. But I'm hoping to start picking up extra work with a production company soon.
This video is a really cool glimpse into the spaces that very few people get to see. Thanks for this.
It’s an amazing job, amazing people and yes you get to see all the places people don’t usually see !
I always wanted to get into this but never know how sadly espeially where I live its hard to get this kinda work
Boom, 1000th subscriber. Congrats brother :)
Awesome! Thank you!
When this was installed, how did the rigging crew know that the grid deck would safely support the load? It appears that whatever was being supported by this installation was being carried by 4 points, but are those points attached to the grid and designed to be load bearing? I'm just starting to learn this stuff, and these are the types of things I think of when I see this, so it's a genuine question.
Proscenium
Grand Drape, 1st Legs, 1st Wings, Mid Traveler, 2nd Legs, Borders. Flying Counter Weight Sys., The scrim, Cinerama, schyc lights
You know your stuff! Right on !
I know cyclorama in the USA is cinerama European?
I find theatre ladders more tiring because of the cage around its like crawling in pipe, vertically
Very tiring lol
This is a really old 'manual' flybar system for those of who are wondering. Good for them biceps! But check out automated systems!
The pipes that fly in and out on the fly rail system are also called battens. So be aware of that should any confusion occur
Yes I meant to say ribbons lol thank you for the clarification!
So many thoughts:
1. I never allow rigging pipes to be loose in the grid. they can roll into a channel and fall.
2. Even in an easy out, I require calling out/communication each time a point is being lowered.
3. Yes, ribbons not battens.
4. That is a beautiful clean grid. I love it. I would dearly like to know why some ribbons are marked in red.
5. When you wrapped the cleat for the cable pic, you only need one wrap low/one wrap high/ one wrap low/twist and tug. I think i saw 2 extra wraps. Also, i appreciate you taking the time to wrap the loose tail. Gold Star!
"Apron" is the edge of the stage. I've been doing this stuff for forty years, kinda wish I'd gone into rigging rather than lighting. And kinda wish I wasn't 70 so I could change careers!
@@jamesauld1470 yes the red ribbons are just marking out where the water lines are located and the sprinkler systems. And thank you!
@@michaelfoster-qw2tw you can always go into rigging !
I was hoping he was going to show us what he let down. You will not find me up there. I have been up about that same height on a side, but quickly decided it was not for me. The theater in question did not have the ribbons in place. I was on a theater tour and they offered a few of us the chance to step out on the edge of a side where tie off's for ropes ended. As a friend of a band that does national tours and hire riggers like these in every city, these guys get a lot of respect from me. As a former volunteer fire fighter, I have been in high places. Still don't like it though.
Yes most theaters don't have the ribbons, this is a new style theatre but yea none the less, moving around up there is always fun. Give it a try again, maybe the second time around will be better!
I'm just a sound guy, the most I know about rigging is hearing someone shout "Heads"
The most important call out !
Are you rigging the theatre or packing away?
packing out a show.
I'm not understanding how that little piece of string tied around the end of the pipe up in the battons is going to prevent that cable from sliding off the pipe if it's vibrating enough to spin sideways.
Yea it sounds pretty funky but you'd be surprised how little resistance it needs to keep it in place.
I was hoping you would go higher.
I wish, unfortunately if I went higher, I would be on the roof lol not much up there!
please do another theatre video
will definitely try.
@@worldwiderigging May I ask...how did you get into this sort of job? for years wanted to work at a venue/theater in general...feet preferably on the ground lol Doing what you just did...doesn't seem too bad if I got into that sort of role...once learning to trust the engineer didn't make a mistake sort of like a bridge that collapsed a few years ago during construction. The stadium video...extremely confident I'd be able to handle one of those smaller mobile sort of stages...climbing that high though on that particular size stage...not my cup of tea.
@@worldwiderigging If you wouldn't mind giving any advice, truly appreciated. I've worked many jobs which have never lasted...working in live entertainment in some manner has just always been that one thing career wise that's always fascinated me. Respect companies may think not the best because it appears to be job hopping...but overall...nothing in this world has ever grabbed my attention like this.
Well that was a bit of a dud, wasn't it?
