    The people doing the shaming are just upset that the prices are going crazy. No one is forced to buy a plant at a price they feel is too much. Every uncommon plant I own has literally paid for itself and then some from me propagating it. My best one to date was a Variegated Florida Beauty, I paid $140 for the plant and the following year I put a single leaf cutting on eBay and started it $50. It sold for $370....I gave her an extra cutting because I felt it was too high, lol.

    • @okanaganblonde4095
      @okanaganblonde4095 Před 3 lety +9

      I’m becoming a big fan of the auction type selling too. I recently brought a bunch of cuttings an a couple slightly uncommon plants (scindapsus/treubii and hoya) back to my hometown and auctioned everything. I think the highest starting bid was $10 and only two had a reserve to cover costs (otherwise no reserve) and I made almost $430 and donated it all to a local dog rescue. I feel much better with a reasonable list price and letting the the buyers decide what they will pay.

  • @yaindyroque12
    @yaindyroque12 Před 3 lety +121

      What's considered over price? To be honest a lot of plants are "overpriced". Like pink princess when the true value of growing the plant is only about $4... but because of supply demand, it went up. I think as long as they are selling at market value, that's fair enough. Selling cutting shouldn't be judged since acquiring plants can be expensive and selling a piece of it can help off set the cost of owning one is fair.

    • @jenniferburns9637
      @jenniferburns9637 Před 3 lety +2

      I’ll start by saying that I’ve never sold a plant. However, in my opinion I could care less if someone wants to try and sell their plants for an astronomical price. If someone else is willing to purchase it, that’s on them right? So long as people are willing to pay, the prices will never go down. It just comes down to knowing your means and being happy with what you have and being happy for the people whose means may look different from yours. I’ve waited years for certain plants because their price point wasn’t in my budget. Makes it all the sweeter when you do snag that wishlist plant :)

      What do you consider "over priced"? If someone is willing to pay whatever price the plant is listed at, it's not over priced.

    I am a beginner to houseplants and this is such a good way for me to buy and grow my collection. Whenever I look at stores or online shops, it's out of my budget. Being able to buy a couple of cuttings or even from people sell for cheap on the purge posts just works better for my pocket.

    I don't where that mindset comes from either. The mother plant usually cost the owner money, along with pots, soil, fertilizer, etc. Why should the seller not sell something of value? And the selling thru Paypal protects the seller and the buyer. A tracking # provides proof the item was received.

    Everyone has an opinion and social media has made people very bold. It doesn’t matter what they think. I came here specifically to find out how I can sell my clippings because I’m in a temporary living situation and I have limited space to add more plants and my babies are growing like crazy. So there are some of us that this makes perfect sense to. 😊

    I love that you made this video. Some people are just salty and bad vibes. If you don’t want to see people selling their cuttings or plants unfollow... it’s not that hard lolol I hope someone comments a legit reason why they don’t approve of selling their cuttings.

    Wow, I had no idea people shame others for selling plants. Lol. That’s just stupid. We go to garden centers and nurseries to buy plants that were once seeds or cuttings. So what is the difference if someone is selling theirs....? It’s actually an intelligent way to profit off your hard work.

    I thought the shaming on selling plant cuttings (rooted or not) was on the people that way way WAY over price the cuttings, which I think is horrible personally, and you do NOT over price your starter plants btw!! Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I thought the shaming was about...

    • @HarliG
      @HarliG  Před 3 lety +21

      Oh I can definitely see that! I guess I can see where people are coming from, price shaming just kind of makes me cringe especially where it’s not a necessity! If I hate the price, I just don't buy haha

    • @ninamicanovic86
      @ninamicanovic86 Před 3 lety +2

      I think some of it is also out concern for newbies on the market! If someone was selling a pilea pepperomides baby for 40 dollars, I'd feel pretty icky if a new plant person bought that. I do understand there's work going into them though!

    • @spiralnerd
      @spiralnerd Před 3 lety +1

      Plant prices can fluctuate a lot over time and by location, which I think can make it tricky and sticky to try to determine exactly what is and what isn't over priced. Pilea peperomioides were super hard to find 3-4 years ago, and were like $40 a baby. I think it's totally reasonable for the seller to factor in various things like how much they paid for the mama plant, what seems to be the going rate for the plant, and also just like how much they're willing to part with the plant for. People can be attached to their plant babies they propagate, and I don't feel like it's necessarily unethical if someone's amount they're willing to part with their plant baby for is higher than the average market value. I feel like it's also reasonable to expect buyers to google the plant before they buy it to get an idea for it's care and average prices, and make their own informed decision.

    • @ninamicanovic86
      @ninamicanovic86 Před 3 lety

      @@spiralnerd Fair! It definitely is on the buyer to know the market. But that being said, if your group doesn't have an explicit price shaming rule, I think you should expect to see discourse re: price. I remember the pilea boom, and there is huge regional variation. I also think if you're someone who is really attached to your plants, you should have the dialogue with yourself about selling it. Especially on these big buy/sell/trade groups, where it is business like.

    • @spiralnerd
      @spiralnerd Před 3 lety +1

      @@ninamicanovic86 Yeah, no I agree that discourse about pricing is totally fair and not a problem. I imagine the decision to list your plants and your pricing would come out of already having had a dialogue with yourself about selling it. I also feel like it's not uncommon for people to be attached to their plants, but need to sell them to pay the bills. Sometimes I see people coming from that place and listing them for cheaper than average because they need them to sell ASAP, and sometimes maybe a little more, because they need the extra cash if they can get it. Idk while I definitely do think there are unethical sellers out there, I also think people can be a little quick to make judgements about a person's ethics based on plant prices, where that might not be super warranted or fair, particularly if all the info they provide about he plant is transparent and accurate, and gives the buyer capacity to make their own informed decision.

    I think there's some legalities here that are important. Technically in some states you need to be a legal/certified grower to sell anything. Selling a copyrighted plant is illegal. And I'd think on Etsy you'd need to be a legal business that takes taxes, etc. Just some food for thought. :)

    I sell my props at my local flea market. The one I go to does not require sellers permit but it’s also more of a bargain flea market so people were turned off by my prices. Except tiny pots. Tiny pots sold fast. So I’m in the process of dividing all my 4 inch pots into 2 inch to be able to lower prices. At another flea market in my city I need a sellers permit but it’s also a bougier one with more small business booths so I’d have no problem selling there. We have to find what work for us. 🧡
