As a resident of Muncie, Indiana I just want to talk about Bob Ross’s house for a minute since I’ve drove past it a few dozen times. It’s a small house, but you can only see half of it. That’s because it’s surrounded by happy little trees. There’s no fence or gate, or, security system at the front, which is just nice that everyone respects Bob Ross enough not to rob him (or maybe there’s more you can only see part of the house). Also yes, Muncie is the setting of the Garfield comics and I feel that adds to Bob Ross’s magic somehow.

    Some presumed FAQs
SPOILERS FOR THE END OF THE VIDEO:
    1. Did I actually paint a painting, or did I fake it?
I really did paint it and I am super proud of how it turned out! Took me forever to cut through 8+ hours of footage because I was stopping to paint stuff for sometimes 20-30 minutes at a time.
    2. Are you ever going to post it anywhere? Twitter or Instagram, maybe?
Nope! But you can follow me on both of those @ScottNiswander for non-painting related content 😉
    3. Did I experience “the joy of painting” while painting?
It came in waves. I think it started with frustrations about not loading the brushes up correctly, but then the sky and clouds came together. Then I messed up the mountains, but some trees made it look alright. Then I messed up mixing colors and got really bummed and kinda started that part over. Then I finished up with a few more plants and it made the whole thing come together in a super satisfying way. It’s weird to say, but I genuinely can’t stop looking at the finished painting. Knowing that I was able to make that without practice is very rewarding, and does give me joy. I will paint again in the future. If only in an effort to pursue the habit of not posting everything I make online.
Also, the Bob Ross subreddit is very wholesome.

This finally clicked something that's bothered me for awhile. My parents, and specifically my mom, have always supported my writing hobby. I've written a couple original novels but at this point I'm writing fanfiction. They've never really judged me for what I write, whether that be genre or characters or morals.
My mom always pushes me to 'succeed', though. I'm sure she's coming from a heartfelt place, but I find it bothers me, because I'm not writing for a market, or fans, or anyone. I'm writing for me; I want to put together a story and bring it to its conclusion. I may end up selling my books; I may not. But the point is not making money; the point is, as said here, the simple joy of creation.
Also, don't ever write a novel with 70 characters, because it will take YEARS to write.

Bob Ross purposely didnt want all the hoopla to be about him, which is why he did very few interviews. The majority of his time was spent doing painting workshops, filming the show and living a quiet life. It is a shame that the people who own his likeness (The Kowalski family, specifically Annette) refuse to allow his work to be sold or displayed (outside of a few pieces on loan to the Smithsonian), but they are following Bob's wishes. They have been interviewed several times, most recently for a NY Times piece in 2019, and have been steadfast is keeping Bob's personal life private.

Popularity creates marketability, it does not define quality. Rockwell was part of a machinery of industry that many artists are not. I'm not here to change your mind, I don't have strong feelings about Rockwell as an icon, one way or the other, but I do think we should think critically, and not confuse arguments. Take a step back from it for a second: Rockwell utilized methods that would be despised by predecessors and discarded by successors while overshadowing many, many equally, or arguably more talented contemporaries. Considering his fame and wealth I don't think the criticisms were unfair in his time, and it would probably be fair enough to take some of them to heart today.

As one of the peeps who can't support you on patreon, I'm happy to let all the ads run fully, now thinking of it as my way of showing my love, rather than something annoying that must be skipped. Happy new year Scott!

I would like to say that as an art major who just recently took a oil painting all of the actual painting parts are so relatable. The confidence meter was so relatable to my final project process. I still often hold paint brushes in my mouth I refuse to learn my lesson. And I too have no idea how paint got on that shirt. Or the dog.

As a person with anxiety myself I fully understand why you kept your painting to just you and your family. To submit something you made to the world of criticism, I know you are no expert in painting, possibly better than myself. I would like to share a bit a knowledge I like to share, critics have pointed out the flaws of Michelangelo's David, but Michelangelo saw David in that marble and chiseled away one of the most famous statues. Please share your painting with people you know love you for you. People who knew you during the research phase, and paint buying phase, to your editing phase. Enjoy your painting and it's future siblings.

I’m 34 years old and was somehow miraculously blessed with meeting him not once but 3x as a young child. He made an appearance at a local art supply store where he talked with me and signed my book which is one of my most prized possessions. Then I got to see him do 2 demos at the local cable station my aunt worked at and pulled some strings to get me a floor seat... among my fondest memories!!!

    • @ssatva
      @ssatva Před 3 lety

I took several days to get around to watching it, and had to do it in a couple sittings, but it's still a great experience.
Also sometimes 'not having the attention span to' is hard to distinguish from 'is unusually deeply affected by', so that might be part of it as well.
Even if not, whatever gets you through it, this stuff is at least worth putting the effort in however we can.

    Hi Scott!
Just read your latest community post. Right now, it hasn't hit 1000 comments, so... here I am!
Been a fan since I watched the "Superman's New Power" video. I'll admit, it was very clickbaity. But if it weren't for that video, I wouldn't be subscribed to you for almost 5 years. Ever since then, I binge-watch all your Comic Misconceptions and pretty much everything else.
And even though we're not getting as many videos as we wish, the love and passion you pour into these videos, comic book or not, is just incredible. Watching you feeling passionate about topics and subjects that you love is always fun and exciting to watch. I wouldn't mind waiting months for your next upload, because I know what you make will always be worth it.
I just recently bought your shirts a few days ago. I wish I could buy more stuff, but my country's exchange rate is ridiculous. Still, I'm looking forward to getting my hands on my fist CZcams merch. I will wear them with pride.
Keep doing what you do, Scott. Your wonderful nerds aren't going anywhere.

  • @Magos_Biologis_Tyranus

Hey thank you Scott for making this video. I'm an emerging artist and I wanted to dip my toes into oil painting. I'm actually about to paint my very 1st oil painting when I'm done with this comment.
I was thinking of posting my oil paintings on my platform, but this video is making me rethink that. I wanted to make oil paintings for the sake of making them and not for content. You not showing your painting at the end was a powerful message and it has affected me.
Thank you Scott all the content you have made over the years, but this video was the one that hit me the most and I just wanted to let you you know that you inspire tiny content creators like me to create for myself and my community.
    Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Gosh darn it, why do you always have to make me cry? Thank you for not sharing your painting. I hope it really brings you joy, and even more I hope it's something that gives you some space outside of your public life. My great uncle paints, and has his paintings made into Christmas cards that he shares with his family. It's my favourite card to get every year. If you decide you want to share your paintings, maybe do it just with your family? It could end up being deeply meaningful to one of them.

The new videos that you’ve been putting out this year have had a lot of heart and insight in them that I really appreciate. Being open about struggles with creating what you want to, as well as concerns about the quality of what you’ve done (the dungeon master stuff in a previous video hit very close to home) adds a great dimension to all the videos.and to cap it off with this excellent video about Bob Ross is perfect. My favourite thing to know about oil painting is that old paintings sometimes peel in parts because the artist didn’t wait for a particular layer to fully cure so you have artists that were known as masters for decades until their works started to flake and it was discovered how little they understood about the medium
Oil painting is hella stupid and I love it

Came here because of Quinton Reviews! Great video, Bob Ross was someone I had never looked into the history of and after watching the whole vid...I have very complicated feelings about him and his business. I like that you tried to leave nuance in the ending, that you didn't 100% condemn anyone with the limited info you had but tried to present what you had found and how you felt about it.
