  • Big Hearted Arthur they called him! Here he is in full flood before an enthusiastic theatre audience, relating his story from the early days as a performer in Seaside Concert Parties, through Radio, Films, Variety, Television, Musical Plays and countless Recordings of mostly novelty songs - a couple of which are included in this excerpt from a live stage appearance in 1978. From the 1920s until shortly before his death in 1982, Arthur Askey remained one of Britain's best loved entertainers.

    The far east---Great Yarmouth! love it. I loved his humour in the seventies & remember him fondly. I named my work flask after him, 'Arthur Flaskey'!

    I've seen him grilling his eggs like there's no tomorrow and also wrapping presents when it's nobody's birthday.

    I wish Arthur Askey had been a guest star on the Muppet Show. He and Fozzie Bear would have taught Statler and Waldorf a lesson with a joke that would embarrass them.

    It may true to say his act was similar, but there is no doubt in denying he was a great theatrical personality and had a big heart, inspiring many comedians like Tommy Cooper, Bob Monkhouse and Ken Dodd, besides I find him innocently funny.

    Interesting but very amateur. Like a great uncle doing a party piece. He looks comfortable and natural enough. I'm impressed by how polite and patient the audience are. Note: there is hardly any laughter . I like his piano but as soon as he sings the bee song you realise how bad he was

  • @karlmaldensnose5889

    Kind of reminds you of the comedy of the 70s and 80s, most of it wasn't funny and wasn't supposed to be funny, canon and ball, little and large pre schoolers humour, falling over custard pie in the face that kind of crap, Russ abbot took it up a notch, upto 12 year olds would have watched that.
    But for the large part most of the so called comedy of the 70s and 80s was aimed at kids, halfwits and half dead old people

      @@davids8449 it was better than 1998 crap, but not as bad as Autumn 2021 crap. The less said about 2005-2007 included crap the better. Odd numbered months in 2021 were good, but the even numbered ones were dreadful. I blame the woke brigade, the dozy batallion, the insomniac regiment and the slumbering company. It's political correctness gone mad, health and safety gone to the dogs, and the correct use of hazardous material gone with the wind.

    I love the film The Ghost Train, the only negative to it is this little fellow. My word his jokes are appalling. His role in the film is to annoy everyone, unfortunately he is too good at it and succeeds in annoying the audience as well.

    • @dryadmusic
      @dryadmusic Před 5 lety +4

      You obviously miss the point then. It's exacty what he was supposed to be in the film.

    • @SALTOWNPRODUCTIONS2
      @SALTOWNPRODUCTIONS2 Před 5 lety +2

      Thereby hangs a tale. In the original play the detective and the music hall performer were one and the same person, and the irritating clowning was there for a purpose - to put everyone off their guard so that he could investigate what was really going on with the Ghost Train, before revealing himself not as a silly ass but a professional sleuth. Because of the enormous popularity of Murdoch's and Askey's 'Bandwagon' radio show they were both booked for the film, and the detective role was split into two. So poor old Arthur is left clowning around and irritating people for no good reason. But he wasn't irritating - at least I didn't think so - he was playing an irritating character.
