A recently discovered clip of Gracie Fields paying tribute to the great entertainer 'Arthur Askey' on Christmas Day, 1974.
Gracie, then aged 76, talks about her time in France with Arthur as members of ENSA.
She doesn't mention in this edition going for lunch with Maurice Chevalier here, but when she told the story on 'Arthur's 70th Birthday' in 1970, she discusses dining with Chevalier -and even sings a version of Arthur's 'I'm A Busy Bee'!
Many thanks to Tony Lee of www.bigredbook.info for this video clip, and the other clip of Gracie with Alberto Semprini. Check out his website and Facebook page, it is a great, ever-growing resource of one of TV's longest running entertainment programmes.
The audio MAY be out of sync with the video. This is a problem occured during the transfer of the film to Windows Movie Maker, and is a problem I'm not sure how to get rid of. The original file is perfect though.

Yeah, she spent a lot of time in Canada and America in the 1940s -mainly because her husband was an Italian citizen, and would have been arrested as a British war criminal (he did take American nationalisation papers out during this time). Her wartime US broadcasts are very Americanised!! After the war, she did seem to dip into American here and there, but also her almost 'RP' accent in the 50s and 60s, and in the 70s back to her Northern one. -Check out some of my other Gracie videos on here.

The Desert Island Discs which has been put online is 1961. Her accent did become quite Transatlantic at one point, but throughout existing interviews and appearances of the 50s, 60s and 70s her accent always remains there somehow...Though not quite, as you say, as strong a Horrocks attempted. Though on Gracie's 78 records and early radio shows she did seem to cash in on her accent, and sometimes was -I feel, slightly over the top in presenting her Lancastrian character.

wescaudy I cannot say for sure, but I imagine so. It may have been her last recorded version, so you’d type that in on Amazon or Spotify or even here on CZcams to make sure. It is gorgeous, isn’t it? If it is the last one recorded Live, yes, it is available.

What is all this bollocks about? Gracie was a wonderful entertainer, she did her bit entertaining the troops during the Second World War. There was never any suggestion of her Husband being a "War Criminal" he was just Italian and subject to internment in Great Britain at the time. She did a wonderful job and even founded a home for orphaned children at what was her home in Peacehaven,in East Sussex. All this business about American Accents is a load of crap. Gracie was Gracie

gracie Fileds seems to have had an enormous amount of imposing presence both when young and when older, I find that very good
nice to see a strong and funny woman
Only the English can produce that in Europe
in other continents its perpas the Australians and the New Zealanders, after all,not forr nothing did they have the vote first there
Sort of eighty years or longer before the last canton in Switzerland, the Land of Tell, finally bestowed it on grateful womanhood ( 1978)
