- Bloomberg recently made a video about India overtaking China's economy. Like how most western media covers the topic, Bloomberg made the two economies appear similar, and the two countries destined to be rivals. This is a great oversimplification and shows our problem with our China and India media coverage.

My view is that as a society, it is reverting to back the age of empires. Current situation is so dire that they only dream of a fantastic future.

Unfortunately for most Indians, they are caught up in the narratives pushed by the West. If Indian leaders had retained greater sovereignty, they would know where their interests lie, and would have quickly resolved their differences and cooperated with China.

India exports about $450 Billion a year.
China exports over $6.6 Trillion a year and is the largest trading partner of 140 countries world wide.
China's strength isn't just a large population. It's the entire industrial, manufacturing ecosystem together with the technical know how, the abundance of labor skills and know how, the state of the art logistics and infrastructure in just one place.
India just can't compete.
They are not even in the same league.
Nothing has been stopping India from becoming modernized, despite all the help and support from the west but most of India is still living in stone age. Africa with over 1 billion population has brighter future than India.

Economically, India and China are in two different leagues. There is no comparison; you’re absolutely correct.
In my opinion, India has a tough time finding itself, largely due to the long history of British colonialism. It’s foolishly proud of its “democracy” and yet blind to its ineffectiveness for a poor developing country with myriads of problems, inefficiencies, cultural and religious divisiveness, corruption and burdensome bureaucracy. In contrast, China is pragmatic, efficient, effective, cohesive and stable.
Geopolitically, India is hysteric about China. This sentiment is clearly manifested in India’s popular media and in its ruling class. Frankly, its root is a mixture of foolish pride, inferior complex and unwarranted suspicion.
Over the decades China has resolved peacefully its territorial disputes with all its neighbors, countries large and small, except two: India and Japan. Chances of a resolution are not good because India’s leadership is afraid of appearing weak by making compromises with China. Also India uses the dispute as a leverage to bargain for favorable considerations from the US. As such, I don’t think India is genuinely wanting to resolve the dispute with China.
It’s ashamed that India is not seeking cooperation with China to jump start and speed up its development. Both are great and ancient cultures. For thousands of years, the two civilizations were friendly neighbors. Frictions between the two nations were a legacy of the irresponsible and evil British empire.
Foolish pride on the part of India is getting in the way of true friendship.

India is developing & progressing - it’s high time too. Indians are euphoric about this. Nevertheless, it cannot be compared to China or any other country. It has miles to go. Great video. But I will like to point out that education in India consists of 2 extremes. Since her independence, India has tried to build a highrise without digging the proper foundation. This is most true with its education system. While India boasts several extremely top notch universities. Its primary and secondary education system for the vast majority of Indians is abysmal. But don't take my word for it. Look at PISA. A yearly multi-disciplinary / subjects test given to a large group of randomly selected students in every participating country by the OECD. About 150 countries compete in it every year. China consistently ranks in the top 5 despite its massive population. While India has done so poorly in the past that she has not competed in PISA since 2009! Apparently 2 yrs ago, Modi wanted India to compete in PISA again but sample tests given to random students resulted in such poor grades that the plan to re-enter PISA competition was scrapped.
It is a obvious trick for West to hype the topic of comparison between India and China. India is a great ancient country and it is independence country who will do everything they want to do. India has the right and potential power to over take the USA and be the First country in the World. China welcome every country to be the First in the World. There are many reasons India can't be the next China:
1) how the two countries became independent or founded...China was built on a successful revolution where India's independence was the result of accommodation and compromise with the British -- meaning not a true new order and still being attach to the old interest group.
2)no land reform -- India will never have high speed rail projects as China, and can not enact policy to facilitate an advance industrial economy
3)religion/ caste system -- this is the biggest reason India is backward
4)women still treated as subhuman
5) Infrastructure basically an F
6)political system -- where corruption rampant on the so call democracy system
7) Lack of common unifying identity as a country, no official language ?? People can't communicate from different region? Modi try to unify India by Hinduism while persecute other non-Hindu population

If you have ever visited India then you will know.
- You will always find someone urinated by the alli way.
- If take the train and look outside, you will always find someone deficating on the side of the rail, including ladies.
- Depends how long was your trip in India, but finding a dead body by corner of the road is very common.

If India’s can maintain its growth of 8% for 28 years, then India’s economy can equal to China’s economy in the year 2020. And If China’s growth is about 5%, India can not catch China at least 70years.

One big difference between China and India has been the quality of leadership and to someone looking in from outside, at least as far as the Chinese and their material fortunes are concerned, China has had much much better leadership. Anybody who's been to both India and China cannot compare the two countries at all. Despite high economic growth, the inequality, social backwardness and poverty in India was shocking to see. In terms of infrastructure and innovation, China is miles ahead by far. Having said that, in the next 50 years, i reckon China will be the undisputed global economic superpower with India following. It has been like that for centuries.

India was never a united country as we know them now. The united India was created by the British for organizational efficiency. That is also why the bonds were not strong in 1947 when the new nation was split between Pak and India. Of course, it did not help given the British divide and conquer strategy. India is more like the EU compared to China. It is a collection of small nations. The north and south are so different. It is too diverse to function as one nation to be able to beat China economically. A lot of alignment and time is needed to reach a China level. That is just the way it is. Certainly great leadership can do miracles, Gandhi being one example, but you need many Gandhis in a row to create a solid foundation from which the nation can take off. Perhaps in a few hundred years of a united India might achieve what China has. I do not think the world understands what China has done in the last 70 years, moving a billion people out of poverty. That is not due to good luck but centuries of trials and errors which created a culture which with the right leadership could and did perform this "miracle". This is not a critique of India but what the facts are. It is a mistake to compare the two great civilizations. They just evolved differently. It is about learning from each other, building relationships and moving on. Historically, these two civilizations had good relations with each other where both were successful and at peace. I personally like the pragmatism of the Chinese. I see that in the BRI program. No patriotism BS on their side. Live and let live. Though Modi is a strong leader, he is doing harm with the Hindu/Muslim stunt. Team India should be about liberating Indians from poverty for a start. It does not have the luxury of the British divide and conquer strategy if it wants to emulate China. This is part of the trials and tribulation journey of the country, to learn and be aware.

Hindia has never been a global power or global economic power. Hindia may have very high total GDP but thats because it has a very large population, but its per capita GDP is extremely low. China's total yearly growth is more than Hindia's, percentage of growth means nothing when the base is small to begin with. Hindia has no global influence in any way, unlike China.

However, I can't overlook the elephant in the room in this discussion -- India's deeply rooted CASTE SYSTEM will hinder the mobilization of India's plentiful resources for a long, long time.
Overpopulation, climate change, rising environmental degradation and food, water and energy prices will be an increasing drag on the economies and stability of both India and China. Not possible for India to take over China's economic growth. It has too many holes in its civic infrastructures and too expensive Civic Services. Unless these Civic factors are remedied, India will NOT reach its maximum potential.
The reason why China is progressing economically stronger and faster that any other country are: (1) amazing Civic Infrastructures; (2) affordable Civic Services for all; (3) a population with a literacy rating of 98%. The Citizens of India are still trying to mobilises efficiently around the cities, states and Country. Housing is in great demand in India, with no real solution in the near future. China has successfully implemented Civic commodities all over their country so now they're at the next stage of development, and that is ... a global trading network (BRI's land, air, and/or sea).

No, China and India are at a different stage of their industrialization. China is no longer the cheapest place to make things and it is also in the stage in transition itself into much higher level in manufacturing. What China has done is that it is quietly sending some of the low end manufacturing jobs to South East Asian countries like Vietnam, this is the reason why almost 40% of Vietnamese export are either in the form of completed, semi completed or parts from China. China has a much wider spread on its technological development and research than India, this really show up when you look at how these two countries spent their money in tech development and research and how much they spent. China spend almost 11 times as much as India on this. India on the other hand spends a lot more of its government revenue on military, If you review China's plans and actions comparing to India, you will realize that China is much faster in implementing its plans than India. Much of India's current economic policy is like China's 20 years ago.
The Bloomberg's growth comment is referring to India overtaking China's growth, it is absolutely correct. For many years now India has been the fastest growing major economy (except maybe 1-2 years in between). I don't get why Chinese people or chinese-aligned youtubers get insecure reading this.
India is what China was in late 2000s(use your own model T comparison now). Its rise in invetible and you too will shed this "India is too poor and incapable image" when media hypes it up at the end of the decade. By 2030, India will reach the 7 Trillion GDP mark, which was China's GDP in 2013.
Also I don't get the "they are at different stages of development" argument. China's GDP per capita is still well below 20k USD. So still room to grow before that "hard-cap" hits. It's just the economy under-performing after suffering from a real estate crisis opening up the wounds of unsustainable infrastructure-spending.
Lastly, so much of automobile design work is being outsourced from Europe to India. To a lower extent, even semiconductor design is being outsourced to Bangalore. If India develops domestic manufacturing capacity, it can leapfrog the manufacturing ladder and produce quality products.
Also, just like we aren't friends of US, we aren't friends of China as well. India won't come even remotely near Chinese GDP till 2050. But India can be 1/2 of Chinese GDP by 2050 and that is more than enough to tip the scale towards the west if China continues this juvenile aggression towards India.

I agree longterm that isn't a good goal, but if you start with that, gradually industrial know-how builds up and that eventually becomes car and airplane production as you move up the value chain. It would be amazing if India can industrialize and team up with China to end Western Imperialism.

It is best to focus on what we do best and spread the wealth to the population. Who cares whether I am no. 1 or 2. Life is very fluid. Nothing remains stagnant for long. And you are right. Both countries have different languages, needs and culture. There may be similarities but there are also differences.
Industrial infrastructure has a rate of deterioration/depreciation, both from wear & tear & competitive obsolescence, the rate at which a new region can replace another is faster than some assume. Neither India or China deserve preferential treatment. China has decades of bad behavior, stealing IP & sleazy State/corporate mercantile behavior, facilitating nefarious propaganda, problematic human rights policies, bolstering bad actors like Russia… they have profited from global functionality & partnerships, but abuse that momentum.
