  • India's Rising Trade Dependence on China: What's at Stake? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
India is facing a growing economic vulnerability due to its dependence on China for essential goods. This dependence comes even as tensions simmer along the shared border between the two countries. Reports highlight a significant rise in India's trade deficit with China over the past five years, which has now crossed the $387 billion mark. Experts point to a lack of alternatives and competitive pricing as key reasons behind this dependence.
However, there are signs that India is attempting to break free from this dependence. During the pandemic, India tried to break Chinese monopoly over the API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) supply. The Indian government implemented production-linked incentive schemes to boost domestic manufacturing capabilities, with some success. Palki Sharma tells you more about India's challenges.

But if Chinese goods are not allowed in, average middle class people will not be able to afford a lot of stuff. Bcz locally made products are out of their budget. India-China relations and Mrs. Palki Sharma's feelings towards China can improve immediately, as soon as you fully realize that China has been India's friendly neighbor for more than two thousand years, and the Chinese people work as hard as the Indian people, or even harder. all territorial issues between India and China were created and left by the British, if the British colonial system can be abolished, then the arbitrary demarcation lines that made by a couple British colonists should and can be abolished.

Independent India too wanted to carve out Tibet, supported Tibetan revolt. British only drew line, but it wasn't ratified in 1914 Shimla Accord, South Tibet remained under Tibet. 40 yrs later in 1951, newly independent India sent troops to take it. Border dispute is India's own doing.

Starting a venture and doing business is very difficult for common man in India. Even though you are not using any child labour and can proove it, the labour inspector will take bribe from you for giving NOC. Electricity dept, Police, Municipality office, Registry office, local politicians from different parties etc : they all demand money and you have to give them to avoid any restrictions/problems and complexities.
And if you are a contractor and you've taken a Government contract, then just forget to be paid after the work completion for quite a few years.
Then there are other problems : you are an outsider, you are not from my state, you are not from my district, you are not from my caste/ethnicity. I am not dealing with you.
And then there are various other problems. Literally too many problems. Too much paperwork, too much bribing, etc. etc.

I am Chinese and it is usually difficult for me to understand the thinking logic of Indians. First: India is so anti-China now, but its trade volume with China is still increasing every year. If there is a substitute, do you think the Indian government will not find a substitute? Second: India’s investment promotion makes me feel strange. Our war with Japan killed more than 30 million Chinese people, but in the 1980s, we very much welcomed the Japanese to invest in our country. We treated them equally. In this way, Hong Kong Taiwanese, Japanese, Singaporeans, and Malaysians have all contributed to our economic prosperity, but India today is different, targeting investors (especially China) in various ways. Third: Indian politicians have been coerced by nationalists. Even Modi, as long as he says "We have no big friction with China", all Indians will attack him. But as long as he says "China is a bully", he will immediately Modi has become the good prime minister loved by the people again. Fourth: How do you feed your 1.4 billion people? The demographic dividend has slowly turned into a demographic burden. Fourth: Manufacturing relocation? Ask why manufacturing has moved to Southeast Asian countries? As for those who have arrived in India, there is no so-called China threat theory, and it is impossible for them to invest in India. Fifth: Just take care of yourself, we Chinese really don’t care much about you.

The list of problems in India
    1.labour laws
2.local hooliganisms more than often supported by local politician of communist ideologies.
    3.high cost of industrial units.
4.inefficient labour ( i know factories where non of the workers attendance is 100 %, so you need to keep backup labour )
5.culture of going to hometown for 30 to 45 days at a stretch during summer.
6.Harassment of govt departments via outdated and illogical, nonsensical laws,
    7. corruption in issuing various licenses and approvals.
    8. it is easier for a multinational to set up a factory in India because if they face issues they can directly approach the big guns at the center and they will be given an audience, whereas a local small scale unit owner's issues are not even heard by the local authorities.
why would someone invest crores in setting up a manufacturing plant and go through the above hassles when you have the option to import from china, you can invest the amount in final product which you save, by not investing in a manufacturing plant, and increase your turnover.
I own a small scale unit and i have avoided to import from china because china is the enemy at the border, but right now i face a greater suffering from the local enemies at my factory gate.

India and China shouldn't really focus on border so much, this isn't a modern way of dealing with politics. I don't remember so much focus on border from Indian people 10 years ago. Maybe it's the media and government's manipulation that changed people's thoughts on this, to gain domestic support.

@@kewenLuso u are Chinese, good, tell your govt to stop being a bully and not try to occupy others lands
china has problems with all its neighbors
the whole world has realised they made a mistake by putting industries in china and are hence decoupling from china now
you are saying that it is the manipulations of media and govt, this may happen in your country where majority of social media is banned
India is a democracy no body can manipulate us
you talked about the situation 10 yrs back, my dear this is the new India we wont think twice before giving a tit for tat response to our enemies
we may have our problems, all countries do but they are between us Indians don't try to interfere in our affairs.
use your energy to get freedom from communist rule.
china has proved that it is a thug and a thug with money, and a coward thug who is using its wealth to influence politics around the world to increase its communist influence.
I wont be surprised if it is found that china is behind the October 7th attacks on Israel, or the protests in western universities, slowly but surely china is becoming the epicenter of evil in the modern world, this is defiantly not the modern way of dealing with politics.
you said India and China should not focus on the border, if that is the case then tell PLA to not focus on the borders, tell them to vacate Tibet, tell them to forget Taiwan, tell your govt to dismantle your military and focus on producing cheap goods which you are famous for.
