It was written about a fatally wounded British Soldier in the Falklands as his life ebbed away his mates stayed with him. It’s been played at many serviceman’s funeral and I’ve seen many a strong man with tears in his eyes when this is played.

    • @TheTaffia
      @TheTaffia Před měsícem +10

It's an anti war song. Knopfler's grandfathers fought on different sides in WW1, one for the British and one for the Austro Hungarians, hence the final lines , We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms. It's not written about a fatally wounded British soldier in the Falklands. Some journalist thought it was about the Falklands, somebody wrote it was about the Falklands on wikipedia using that journalist as a source and now everyone is running around claiming it as true without any actual evidence. Any of you lot doing this got a quote from Knopfler stating it is about a British soldier in the Falklands war?? I think not.

@TheTaffia well, Knopfler's direct inspiration for this song was actually The Falkland War and some notification made by his father on that but true that this is one of the greatest anti war songs of all time, sharing the ordinary soldier' perspective

Knopfler has a unique playing style. Melancholy is a great word to describe this song. There's a scene from the TV show "Miami Vice" that uses this song, and it's a really powerful scene. That show had some artistic videography anyway, and the sonic/visual picture they painted was very emotional.

FYI - Mark Knopfler (former Dire Straits lead guitarist/ vocalist/ songwriter) has a new solo album in 2024 - 'One deep river'... Check out the song "Two pairs of hands"...
'Brothers in Arms' was written about British soldiers in the Falklands war of 1982... album title track of Dire Straits' biggest commercial album in 1985.

Thank you - so nice to finally see a Dire Straits reaction video that notices the brilliant bass player. He’s called John Illsley and is the co-founder of the band together with Mark Knopfler. I have listened to thousands and thousands of hours of Dire Straits music, both album and concerts, and I have never heard John Illsley miss even a single note. Solid and really great bass.
If you want to hear more I’d recommend the Alchemy Live album - the opening track “Once Upon A Time In The West” has a great bass line, but all the songs on there are fantastic. You won’t regret it.
Great reaction - but be careful if you pick up the guitar, Mark Knopfler is one of the worlds greatest guitar players with his completely unique fingerpicking and strumming style, it’s not easy to replicate
    😉.
John Illsley is pretty handy on a guitar also actually, and has made some great solo music too - “In the Darkness” is a favourite of mine:

Weird to think that I listened to this cassette over and over again in around 1985, when I was 11. Brothers In Arms is one of those songs that defines my childhood. There are only about 10 of them. If you like this vibe, you might like some amazing Jerry Rafferty stuff. And on CZcams Igor Presnyakov does a really nice solo acoustic version of Brothers In Arms.

  • @stevefoulston

Another fingerstyle Unlike most rock guitarists, Lindsey Buckingham does not play with a pick; instead, he picks the strings with his fingers and fingernails and tends to strum with his middle and ring fingers. Initially after joining Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham used a Gibson Les Paul Custom. Peace out

Millie...

Jeff Beck is a top guitarist who does finger-style playing for most of his songs. He's done covers of "A Day in the Life" (written by the Beatles) which are excellent. For many years his bad included Tal Wilkenfeld as the bassist, so you might enjoy those quite a bit. There is a video of them doing that song at Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007, and another which is live at Ronnie Scott's. The second one would probably be the better one to watch, since it's a much smaller stage. I suspect there are many other videos of his that you'd enjoy watching. Most of what he's done has been instrumental songs.

I saw in a documentary, where Mark K' made a note of the military service share of this song. He learned that during the first Gulf War in early Feb'1991, as British tank crew went into Iran (using GPS, which Iraq did not have, and they didn't consider that armies could traverse the deserts) -during the night, British Tanks stopped "somewhere" in the desert to refuel, and the soldiers to rest, have tea, do maintaninece -that "Brothers in Arms" was played between the tanks, from CD,...likely other tunes too, yet Mark K' was rewarded, he said, by this song played.

Would you please just shut up ...(I mean that in a nice way).. this song deserves a better reaction, one where there is no talking....just understanding.

I usually like your reaction videos so will try to be constructive here.
You picked up SOME of the nuances in this track but missed a whole lot more that as a total package make this song what it is. It is not just about the bass or melancholic brilliance of Knopfler's guitar.
I get you're a reactor and need to comment but would recommend that you either pause (then rewind just a bit), overlay your comments into your video or wait until the end to comment. What you missed was the rest of the musical accompaniment and the very powerful lyrics that go with the brilliant visuals/video. You can't react again, but I'd suggest listening and watching perhaps with the lyrics if you can't pick them up. It's a greater overall experience of this song.
