Listening To An Original Buddy Holly Studio Recording in Clovis, New Mexico

- Buddy Holly recorded his early hits in Clovis, New Mexico at the Norman Petty Recording Studio. Jay Fisher's father was Petty's engineer and saved the original equipment used in that studio in the mid 1950s. Most of the equipment you see in the video, including the large metal audio mixer, was used to record Holly - including his first big hit, "That'll Be The Day" - one of the most important records in American music history. (Fun Fact: that was the first song The Beatles ever recorded in a studio session together.)
This analog recording (captured on my Iphone) makes Buddy Holly seem like he's literally standing in the room with us. I'd never heard his voice like this before. It was truly incredible.
The Norman & Vi Petty Rock N Roll Museum in Clovis has lots of historic memorabilia from the studio and local Clovis music history. The museum's recording studio can also be visited and if you're lucky, you'll have the chance to meet Jay and his wife and hear one of these musical treasures in analog!
I'm a gen z and I'm sick of apologizing for voice correction, and production that is so over processed and sterile. Even the music on the radio gets made on laptops, and computer plugins. This is talented young men in a room getting their chops up and cutting a timeless record. You can actually hear the room, the inflections and the zeal in Buddy and the Crickets. These are tight performances, simple yet with so much heart, and with a real chorus for goodness sake.
Well said, my friend. I am a Baby Boomer and heard his songs on the radio WHEN THEY WERE BRAND NEW! And loved them then and still do! Take it from a guitarist/musician of 62+ years ... Buddy was a brilliant songwriter, producer and an impeccable, perfect-pitch singer, who sang with great feeling. And while you are at it, check out Ricardo Valenzuela, aka, Ritchie Valens. His, "My Darlin's Gone" is one of the greatest songs of the '50s rock and roll era.

Was born in 2003 myself and love all 50s and 60s music, you can just feel the heart and soul more with that music and the love is so much more real.

@@Tcbelvizz I do get it, I do see your point. As someone who was inspired by Buddy and Ritchie Valens, to pick up a guitar; musically I see Buddy as a musician and singer; I see Elvis as more of just singer. I know Elvis was one of the big influences on music at the time.
Buddy holly was truly a great singer I have 8 or so of his albums I purchased as a teenager in the 1960s I still play buddy's albums never get tired of his singing I'm sure his widow Maria appreciates his fans to this day as well.
Now this is really something to be preserved.
Love the original equipment and there's nothing like the fidelity of reel to reel.
Those Ampex 350s' were / are real work-horses...mine just keeps on going. And going...

Been there! In May of '22, on our way to Albuquerque, my wife and I had arranged for a tour of Norman Petty's studio. Being there was incredible, but having Kenneth Broad (and his wife) guiding our tour went way beyond rock and roll history, into the deeply personal sense that we were with friends. It was a rich experience that I am truly grateful for.

Buddy Holly and The Crickets, first became aware of Buddy and the group thru the Movie about his life in the late 70"s ? they were truly ground breakers. They will always be Fantastic musicians.

He invented nothing. Holly would have been a small-town country singer had Elvis not invented Rockabilly at Sun Studios in 1954.

Many reel-to-reel gems have been lost to fire, floods, and tape degradation over the years.
Has that tape (in this video) been digitized to DSD?
If that reel-to-reel is lost or damaged, it can never be re-created. It can never be replaced.
And it would be a crime to not share the DSD file with the world. Hearing it raw, without studio compression, equalization, etc, would be a huge treat.
Well they recorded it with the effects printed into the tape back in those days but if the released version is a tape copy and this is the original this will sound better
I cannot imagine how good that sounds in the room.

Almost all of Buddy's master recordings were lost in the Universal Music Group fire in 2008.
Can’t beat the aural purity & immediacy of these Norman Petty studio recordings. While Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound made his records sound massive on AM radio, it leaves behind recordings that pale in comparison when played back on modern audiophile systems.
It is no small feat to have kept all that original equipment. Check out the tubes on that McIntosh 275 on the right hand side, where do you get tubes like that these days??? That was such an innovative sound at the time, it's hard to imagine just how fresh that sounded at the time.

To be pedantic, this technically was not the original recording. The original recording was completed without The Picks backing vocal group. They were added later.
And frankly, the tape is moving too slow to be a master. What, 7.5ips here?

I speculate that Buddy KNEW what an angry guy Bo was so he purposely disguised the beat to NOT sound like what the Stones did later. Obviously he did other "Bo Beat" songs in concert so he was VERY familiar with it. Either that or he really misremembered how his beat went?

Beautiful sound. But this equipment and the setup look different from what is on display in the (real) Norman Petty Studios, which I visited last year in Clovis NM. According to what I know one can only visit it with a specific appointment. The Rock 'n' Roll museum is something else, somewhere else in Clovis, and very nice too.
That's because the equipment at the studio is not the original equipment. The gentleman in the video is the son of Petty's longtime engineer. He owns the actual equipment which is in the Rock N Roll museum.

In book “The King of Clovis” (Frank Blanas, 2013, I have this book here at home in Rotterdam) I saw a photograph on page 54 showing the same mix-unit as in your film. The picture also shows Norman Petty (7th Street Studio) using one of the large tape recorders. But I also have a copy of a picture (may be from the internet) showing Norman in his chair sitting and operating the production equipment which is at the 7th Street Studio today. It seems obvious hat he renewed and replaced the equipment so now and then.

That’s all sir. And as being a European Buddy Holly fan, I asked him, because I was curious about the equipment. Please note that my adjomusic- and adjofilm accounts are purely leisure interest (not in any way commercial). All pictures come from my own video-cameras (I traveled a lot since 1980), and I edited the films myself. 🙂

...also Norman Petty would have recorded no slower than 15 ips. This recording is moving at 3 3/4 ips.
Hey know-it-all.... the man playing the recording is the SON of the engineer who recorded all of his sessions. Those are his Dad's original tapes.

Sounds crisper than anything I've heard of Buddy's records. I'll regret this guy's early death for ever - he was so innovative with such potential. He invented the completely self contained rock band.
Surely thats not the original master tape? Would it have survived? Certainly audio perfection nonetheless....
I'm not sure why people say that? Plenty of original tapes have been preserved over the years if they're taken care of. If they sit in a garage somewhere - no. But if they're taken care of, they can survive just fine.

The frequency response was good (crisp sounding), but the room noise made the background singing and drums, sound kind of amateurish. Back in the 50's that worked, though. They didn't have multiple tracks to work with (although they could do sound on sound using more than one recorder) so they worked with what they had. That is a fun trip through music and recording history. Thanks for the video.

@@v-town1980 I agree. With rap, I think that the creators of it did research to find out which sound would irritate people the quickest. Then they gave it a name, and proceeded to market it to every immature person on the planet, so as to be used as an impliment of irritation. Generations of pimple faced, frustrated, young men, have thanked them for this creation. Afterall, what better tool to use against your parents when they refuse you your allowance. Just turn it on and know that your parents want to break down the bedroom door to get that noise and stop it. And, remarkably, legions of musically ignorant young women have fallen for their male counter parts, resulting in reproduction, thus insuring that the next generation will have plenty of opportunities to prove Darwin, right. (And news organizations around the world are happy as they have the next generation of people who will be featured in crime stories that they'll sell.)
