Bringing back the memories. I didnt realise how lucky I was. Built a Sand Scorcher and Ford Ranger. Both in the loft. Wanted a Super Champ. How ungrateful 😂 Parents bought me the body which we modified to go over the console box. How quickly we all moved onto the Hornet and everyone thought these VW based dune buggy cars were old hat. They look as glorious now as they did when I was 12. Great channel. Keep it up.

It’s really bizarre that your comment came through when it did my friend! I was actually just thinking the very same thing. I classed these as old bits of junk when I had my Thundershot 😂👊🏻

Had one in 79. Love it. The guys at the track started running the hornet but they were so light i was able to out handle them for a bit. Awesome machine for sure.

I was the opposite. Saw the Rough Rider new when I was ten and thought it was awesome. In 1985 when I was old enough to buy my first real rc car I was sadly disappointed with all the plastic junk that had become standard

The Frog, and Hornet and the Grasshopper were all released when I was a kid - I used to look in the window of the model shop in Bolton, Lancs, watching the promotional video on a loop. Nothing else gave that feeling of excitement that that era of cars gave me as a 10-15 year old. The glossy brochure, the big boxes on the shelves of the shop! I hope kids these days experience that excitement in the same way. Years later I bought the mini version of the hornet and my kids love it!

My first hobby grade RC car! I saw it in a magazine at the elementary school library, I think it was 1982 or 1983! I was 12 or 13 and didn’t know this level of rc car existed.
Low and behold, it showed up in that year’s Sears Christmas catalog!
It was the only thing I wanted so being an only child, I got it.
I spent the rest of Christmas putting it together.
Almost 40 years later and I am still blowing money on this hobby!!

Last weekend I has finished my own Buggy Champ! I has painted him in Tamiya's "racing green" with yellow/silver lights, yellow drivers helmed and what can I say...this is an absolutly beauty car🙏😊. This is my third kit ( I have one TT02B and a TT02 onroad) and the testdrive last sunday was an epiphany! I think you can feel the weight an heavyness of this car during you drive it. I am absolutly in love with my Buggy Champ and I'm very excited to see your work at this beauty 🙂

As a 12 year old back in 82, I was addicted to Model Cars magazine.
I chose, then saved for ages, to buy myself model 16.
    The Sand Scorcher.
I did pick up a Rough Rider body for it after a little while.
We ran those buggies everywhere. The best fun.
Went on to race for years, had great times with RC cars over the years, but nothing beat opening those original boxes and blister packaging.
I still have a few of the original SRBs, and a couple of re-releases too.

This was my first Tamiya Rc car in 1984 , I used to get a bus up to the local Taylor & mcKanna toy shop just to watch the Tamiya videos, I remember wanting it for so long, then eventually my dad brought me one for my birthday complete with Acoms radio gear, for a £150, I also loved the superchamp but that was about another £50. it was great for a year then my mate got a grasshopper which was so much lighter & quicker despite only having a 360 motor, we joined a racing club, the rough rider couldn't compete with the kyosho tomahawks & hirobo Zerda, so i sold it & brought a Tamiya Fox.then a Boomerang. Despite it being heavy & slow, there was something about all that cast metal that made it more real. i'm now 48 but i think i need to go & buy this again.

You just can’t beat Tamiya packaging to make you smile it’s an instant lift and brings back so many happy memories of childhood in the 70”s 80”s
building them with my Dad. Back in the day as a 14 year old my first Tamiya rc kit was a Lamborghini Cheetah which looked great and ran ok but didn’t have the best suspension in the world the plastic torsion bars were always snapping. Anyway in my later years I’ve built a re release XR311
and a Sandscorcher. Still got a couple of Cheetahs including my original Christmas 79 present still works with the original rc set up plus upgrades to the suspension using the XR3 11 set up metal torsion bars. Wished Tamiya would re release the cheetah but not much chance now considering how long it’s cousin the XR3 11 has been out again.

As for which was my favourite... I loved the paint and those rear tyres on the Sand Scorcher, and loved the body, wheels and tyres on the Ranger, and liked the Rough Rider the least! My mate had the Ranger in blue and white and it was amazing. Thing is, now nostalgia's got me I really dig the Rough Rider, and even though I think it looks better in the colours you're doing, I'd still have to do red if it were me, just because mine was red all those years ago! Doesn't make much sense, but there you go...

As I recall, the 1979 original had an absolutely 100% waterproof mechanism box (Tamiya provided 'silicon sealant' with the kit to achieve this. Also applied to the Sand Scorcher & Ford Ranger) and the results were incredible. I could literally drive my Sand Scorcher through shallow streams and puddles which fully submerged the vehicle back in another lifetime in 1983. No moisture penetrated or damaged the servos and receiver. The switch had a rubber cover also to consolidate the protection. Sadly with this version, it's not possible with the ESC wiring that needs to run through the bottom of the box to the motor casing. Perhaps with modern waterproof servos and receivers avaiable today this is academic anyway, but it was a highly impressive capability for a 'toy' ('Toys they're not:)) all those years ago! Can't wait to see her finished.

Nice video. Brings back memories. One thing the original didn't have are the ball-bearings. It came with brass bearings that after a while would wear out and make the front wheels wobble. Despite that, was a such a nice buggy.

When these were released back in 1979 they were prohibitively expensive. Every kid wanted one but I'd say only 1 in 100 actually had their parents come through for them. It's not until the Hornet and Grasshopper were released that kids really had a shot at owning these types of cars. From then on it became very popular.

Hi. I don't know if my previous comment got put in the spam bin because I added a link to another video. Basically I was pointing to a Sand Scorcher video by Matteo called Sand Scorcher in Extreme Off Road Action and at the very end he has a Rough Rider that rolls over and smashes the roof and lights up. It demonstrates the problem of a car that is as heavy as a brick with a flimsy plastic roof. Does look smashing but the Sand Scorcher is better at withstanding a crash. Not much mind !

I have and original SS body now still looking for an original chassis. I love all your builds and loved the tyres on the Falcon but please don’t put yellow on the RR tyres, need to be white so as not to clash with body ( unless of course you want to paint it yellow and white 😁) merry Christmas! - Pete.
