How to connect soundbar to TV with HDMI and Optical Cable instead of HDMI ARC!

- Did you know you could connect both optical cable and HDMI cable simultaneously from TV to soundbar. But, why would you do so if everything already works with just optical cable. Well, by connecting the HDMI cable in addition to the optical, you will be able to use your TV's remote control to control the soundbar's volume! If you had only connected the optical cable to the soundbar, then you'd have to use a separate remote control for the TV and sound bar. This method is also useful, if your TV or soundbar doesn't support HDMI ARC. Plus, it is also one of the ways to troubleshoot the problems related to the soundbar. For example, if sound comes only from one side of the soundbar.
A few people have mentioned that in the above video at 1:32 I've shown HDMI cable into HDMI ARC and in 1:20, I've shown HDMI cable into HDMI IN. Good observation and I want to thank you for you questions and comments and I'm sorry for the confusion it has caused. If you connect HDMI IN on both sides, do I need to do something with the TV in order to control the volume on the soundbar? For example, if I am watching a different HDMI IN on the TV (say, cable box in HDMI 1 and sound bar to HDMI 2), and HDMI1 is selected for cable, the TV can still control the volume level of the sound bar via HDMI2?
Thank you. I'm going to try this. The TV often switches from sound bar ARC back to the TV speakers. I'm hoping this will keep it always on sound bar with the optical. And knowing the TV will turn on and off the sound bar is very good as well.

@jaymac did your issue resolve after this? I have a samsung soundbar and it keeps switching between arc to tv sound. Getting frustrated about what to do
@@RockPaul-eb2nz No it did not fix my problem. At first I thought I'd found a solution by turning off audio passthrough on the TV. The soundbar would be connected and working every time. Then, for no apparent reason I'd hear nothing. Switching back to TV audio didn't work either. I had keep trying to get it all to work until it did, as though everything had to 'warm up' for a while. Maybe my soundbar is not compatible with the Sony Bravia TV, it's made by Wohome which gets very good reviews for a modestly-priced soundbar. When it works, the soundbar sounds very good. Another odd thing is that when I use the bluray player, the soundbar stays connected and works just fine

Thanks for explaining the volume control bit. Question, my sound bar only has 1 hdmi arc port not a hdmi in. Would this this work ?
You're most welcome. HDMI ARC is much better option. But, if you won't have the ARC, then IN is the 2nd best.
@@bhupindertube I need a hdmi arc converter right ? So I can control the volume from my sky/ tv remote when using optical (tv to converter then hdmi to convert for sound bar).
@@bhupindertube another question sorry, I’ve got a new tv (Sharp android tv, 65DN2KA). The volume settings go back to default after turning it off and on but sometimes it’s fine. What could be the reason?

Is there any way to get hdmi arc OUT from my tv into digital optical IN to my speakers? I don't wanna use the optical because I need 2 remotes.
Good question! But unfortunately optical cable is just not able to transfer the data in 2 ways. So, even if you connect hdmi to optical - the data will be lost and also won't be able to come back from the speakers to the TV via optical cable.

@@bhupindertube I have the option to connect the speakers via jack from tv to rca into the speakers but when I close my tv I get a pop every 5 seconds and it s really annoying. Idk what could it be.

Yes, you could but you got to alter some of your TV settings. It's usually undesirable to listen simultaneously.
I have a Bravia and a Sony soundbar. I don’t know why they stopped working together suddenly. But I did exactly this but I connected to HDMI Arc and Optical and it works fine. I use the TV remote control for TV and sound bar.
What's the difference from TV arc /optical
By TV arc you mean HDMI ARC? ARC means Audio Return Channel. That means the data can transfer both ways. I would also suggest you to watch my other videos for more information:

I'm going to test this tonight. Currently I'm just using two remotes, one for tv and one for soundbar volume. Can you clarify if I should connect the HDMI cable into the IN on the soundbar, or the OUT(arc) as you've shown both in your video.
What I believe will fix my problem, is I leave the optical cable as is - then I take a fresh HDMI cable, connect it to any free HDMI input on my "Non-ARC" tv, and then plug the other end into a 50/50 shot on my Samsung soundbar. One final step I may or may not have to make is to disable the audio output of the tv itself.
Can you confirm I'm on the right track here? And any comment on the discrepency of the HDMI location between 1:20 and 1:32, respectively. They are swapped. I chalked this up to editing mistake. Just making you aware.

No Dolby Atmos with optical cable, only 5.1 signal! If you want the highest quality and you're running a stereo 2.0 signal then optical would probably be the way to go.
