    It's interesting that the "cheater" doesn't seem to have cheated on purpose. He sounds surprised at finding that out, as though he merely made a mistake. It's almost like all the players knew it was just an accident and wanted an excuse to light each other up like cheap doobies.

    • @Duskets
      @Duskets Před 4 lety +76

      This scene is a metaphor for the breakdown of relations between the US and Japan, hence the needless hostility they're exhibiting. I think immediately after this, you find Travis and he mentions that the peace talks have fallen through and that the two nations now have nothing to keeping them from all-out warfare.

    • @TriToneTiefling
      @TriToneTiefling Před 3 lety +41

      Watching it again, it seems like the other japanese guy was the one who planted the cheat. He's not surprised when the other guy is, he sounds frustrated that he didn't get what he wanted out of it.

    • @moguuera1197
      @moguuera1197 Před 3 lety +29

      neither the US nor Japan fully knows what they're "gambling" with, so to speak. the yakumo holds tremendous amounts of otherworldly power. similarly, nobody knows that Kun Lan is the one "cheating" the system

    • @Kapelusznik10I6
      @Kapelusznik10I6 Před 2 lety +44

      It's very obvious it wasn't intentional cheating so that's why he's surprised.
      He's calling that guy a cheater because he attempted to win via Ron (win by stealing other player's discarded tile) which you can not do if you are in Furiten (essentially prevents you calling Ron if you earlier discarded any tile that would allow you to win currently).
      If anything, claiming Ron while in Furiten is more of a rookie mistake rather than a cheating attempt as everyone at the table can clearly check if you're in Furiten.
      Meaning there's no fucking way anyone would overlook the Furiten (and there's no way for the "cheater" to hide the fact he's in Furiten) unless it's some casual play where nobody pays much attention so that's the most unlikely to work cheating strategy.
      Therefore everyone MUST HAVE known it was a mistake rather than a deliberate cheating attempt, it's not really a chance that it was a mistake and everyone else knew but instead it's literally what happened which further plays into the theme of political metaphor and them escalating the conflict over anything they can, even if trivial and unjustified.
      Also in the "cheater's" case he discarded 5 Man tile at the very beginning so he was in Furiten because at the end he could only win via a 5 Man tile,
      However the weird part is that the person he used Ron on very clearly discarded a 1 Man so NOT his winning tile so he couldn't use Ron anyway Furiten or not.
      Which makes it even more obvious that guy is supposed to have no fucking clue what's he doing in the first place, this with the addition of his "I know your train of thought" line could be interpreted (in the political metaphor) as him being severely overconfident and refusing to believe things wouldn't go as he planned, literally refusing to face the reality and believing he is always correct.
      A slight edit because I noticed one more thing:
      The "cheater" already has three 1 Man tiles in in his hand and the black guy discarded one 1 Man at the start and then discards another 1 Man when he declares Riichi.
      Meaning there's a total of five 1 Man tiles in play, the issue is that there's only four of each tile, meaning that someone must have cheated intentionally by sneaking in additional tile into the game with most likely culprits being the "cheater" guy and the black guy that accused him of cheating.
      Personally I think it's the black guy that added the illegal tile and really cheated, mostly because it would actually explain the initial confidence of the "cheater", because perhaps the black guy really had 5 Man tile he was about to discard but sneakily replaced it with an illegal 1 Man tile. It would also add additional layer of him accusing someone else of cheating because he wanted to cover his own ass and make people not realise HE cheated.
      Although this also doesn't make perfect sense because why would he decide to cheat instead of just discarding a 5 Man tile that was completely safe to discard, which means that perhaps the "cheater" has indeed cheated but then why would he not anticipate someone else discarding the illegal tile, but if the black guy cheated it could also play into the whole "nobody knows what they're doing" aspect, since it takes some time for him to call out the Furiten perhaps he didn't realise before "cheater" declared Ron so instead of discarding a completely safe tile he decided to cheat because he didn't realise that tile was indeed safe.
      Perhaps that ambiguity is also the point, nobody even realises someone cheated for real, nobody knows who cheated, nobody knows what they're doing, everyone is just looking out for themselves, everyone will just accuse anyone over any pretext just to escalate the conflict. An absolute clusterfuck in which nobody knows what's happening for real and will immediately point fingers at anyone in order to save their own skin.
      Basically the perfect metaphor for politics.
      There's also the option of too many 1 Man tiles being just an error of developers and not intentional but I don't think that's the case when you consider how much of an emphasis they put on the "cheater's" tiles, I doubt they would make such a basic and silly mistake over the most important tiles in the scene.

    One of my favorite running gags in this game is where you run into one of the diplomat's remnant psyche (basically a ghost) later after seeing this scene and the first thing he has to say about the incident is, "The talks fell through." That's one hell of an understatement.

      @@aestheticswim3397 mahjong is basically just a 13 card hand of poker with many more variations and rules. you go around in a circle drawing 1 tile then discarding a tile until somebody has a winning hand. the furiten rule basically means that at some point you discarded a tile that you couldve used to win your current hand and because of that, you need to find a new win condition that doesnt use that tile in your winning hand. its a common noob trap because there are some times where youre sitting there with 20 discarded tiles not realizing you may have put yourself in furiten stopping you from a winning hand or declaring a hand that isnt valid anymore.
      looking further at his hand it looks like he was going for a full straight flush of characters but discarded a fuckton of them for some reason, i dont understand the depth of that.

    Why does the guy who discarded the 1m call him out on furiten and not the fact he called ron incorrectly?

    Why does the guy who discarded the 1m discard said 5th 1m other than it being safe(i probably just answered my own question for the 2nd point)?
