- At one time, Ronnie Hickman was Ohio State’s next super star playmaker and had a chance to be a second to third round draft pick. After a breakout 2021 season at Ohio State, it seemed like the sky was the limit for him, but after a few bad games and questionable decisions, Hickman did not hear his name called in the 2023 NFL Draft and went undrafted. Today, I want to talk about why his stock died and how Hickman rose to begin with, enjoy!

Before the draft, he was a high riser on PFFs draft board, climbing as high as the 2nd round. If you have a mediocre or bad combine and can't erase that with a good pro day, you are sliding. The good news is he still gets $750,000 base salary for a 3-year contract, so if he plays well, he can earn a bigger paycheck in a few years, and where did he go - Cleveland? That's not a bad spot.
Cap on that 2nd round projection and no contract is guaranteed in the league......

All of those fans are plugging in the rumors they heard about their own team and just before the draft, their board is really accurate. This isn't a cap or no-cap situation kid, and this isn't Tik-Tok lol! For the record, some respected big boards had Hickman as the #115th rated player in the draft. The lowest board I saw had him at #207, proving my point that combines and pro-days matter. Just ask Kenny McIntosh.
Also, since you brought it up for some strange reason, yes - there are many partially and even some fully guaranteed contracts in the NFL. Jackson just got a 100% guaranteed contract, yes? I didn't suggest Hickman would get guarantees as a UDFA, but he could in the form of contract or signing bonuses which some teams will do as incentives, even for UDFA players.

@@theslickrips5904 Why do you say that? Jim Schwartz hit the reset button. The Browns have Thornill, Grant Delpit, D'Anthony Bell and Bubba Bolden. They released safety John Johnson III in mid-March, while Ronnie Harrison Jr. is an unrestricted free agent, and they brought in McCleod, but Hickman can beat out a couple of those guys. And if he doesn't, his agent will get him a spot somewhere else because everyone knows his name.

I think he’ll make the Browns 53 man roster. Not sure about the snap count but “In three preseason games, Hickman has eight tackles and three pass deflections along with his three interceptions.” He also has at least 7 ast tackles too. Dude has been a ball-hawk.
I think missing that pro day hurt his chances to get drafted higher.

every level you go up in sports, it gets more cut throat. some people have it at the next level, some don't. this is why so many people scratch their heads & wonder why the nil draft is littered with so many busts & players that disappoint. it's also why there's only one tom Brady & one Michael Jordan. eventually there are a handful of players that succeed at every level.
He declared for the draft two early. He's playing for the browns and will do good in the nfl,but he declared to early and will probably need a full 2 to 3 seasons before he starts to make his presence felt.
Noah Sewell! He was predicted to go in first round, beginning of the 2022 season. And got drafted in 4th round.
Hes doimg good with the Browns right now. Hes a backup, obviosly, but not for long if he keeps playing the way he did against the jets and overall in his 2023 season

It was obvious after he declared for the draft he played to avoid getting hurt. What about the play against UM where he was like a matador allowing McCarthy to waltz into the end zone? As an OSU fan I'm glad the guys on defense this year all have something to prove and need to make plays in order to get drafted high. Hopefully they all saw how Hickman didn't get drafted.

Hickman is a very talented player for someone who went undrafted. He's a big safety who is a very solid tackler. He just seemed to struggle with pass pro and would find himself in the wrong spot at times, which led to big plays for the opposing offense. He should have stayed in school.

Not sure Hickman ever was a superstar. At his best he was a solid starter-- maaayyybbbeee fringe star. Solid run defender but had too many problems in coverage. He was more of an above average starter by elite college football standards.
Well you can say hey got Exposed against the Dogs but consider the talent he’s playing against he had a decent career at OSU so idk why he went undrafted maybe he will be one of those players in the NFL who can say they made a good career as an undrafted player I wish the dude luck

I think I remember him. I am pretty sure, not 100% sure, that in few big games he was a liability. I think in multiple games Ohio State conceded huge plays, and it felt like he was beaten every time. If he is the guy I am thinking off

He always looked like an undersized Linebacker not a safety. OSU might have done him a disservice by playing him in one on one coverage WAY too much, and got beat by most TE's and EVERY WR. Now if he worked out at Pro Day got bigger he easily would have been a 7th round pick at woest. Head Scratcher. But he screams nice project. Assistant coaches LOVE that because they think they can mold him into something. But he screams special teams beast!
I am not seeing the same college player as advertised here tbh. Yeah, he had quite a few tackles, but mainly because linebacker play at Ohio was so terrible. As for coverage... he was average at best. Why he declared for the draft and not do his pro-day or show at the combine is, well just dumb. He should have stayed in school. My guess, you'll never see him in an NFL game.
Ronnie needed one more year in college to solidify himself as a true draft prospect. He simply came out too early.

The title of this video is so misleading. Hickman was NEVER a " superstar " at Ohio State. The majority of the fan base has always seen him as just average.

Had a much better year in 21 than he did in 22---Maybe because of the new scheme Knowles brought in----Whatever it was, he kind of disappeared last season.
The money being thrown at the top college players is ruining some good players.

Superstar is a strong and totally inaccurate description of Hickman. He was a solid player, but no one knows his name outside of the B1G. Don’t get me wrong I will miss him as a player and a person, but he’s not nor never was a superstar.

As an ohio state fan, Ronnie Hickman was a liability tackling. He would considtently box himself out of plays and had some of the most horrid open field tackling technique Ive ever seen. I remember CONSISTENTLY seeing his jersey when plays went wrong during the Georgia game. Hes really not that good and it entirely makes sense that he dropped.
