I think it actually hurt him to absord them, as he sounds in pain when they enter him. Probably feels his own personality erasing itself for one more soul that he consumes.

I think he didn’t actually realize this fact. Something he didn’t calculate.
Not only did he not have a soul but apparently he also didn’t have a brain!
Fun fact: The Ghost Rider in the comics is very indiscriminate with who he punishes, he can still kill demons like Blackheart no matter if they have a soul. The Rider’s job is too hunt down anyone that escapes hell, so against demons he’s actually at his more powerful.
Also the Shotgun he used? Was actually in the comics, it’s called the Hellfire Shotgun (For obvious reasons) and it’s one of the few things in the entire universe than can actually hurt GR.
Here’s a complete list of things that can kill GR: Holy weapons (So weapons forged In Heaven), The One Above All (Marvel’s version of God himself) and The Hellfire Shotgun.
The list of weapons could probably include the Hand of Hellboy (which was forged by an Archon), if they ever do a crossover.
Technically, TOAA and the Judeo-Christian God are not the same being. In 616, Yahweh is his own being, different from TOAA, and at some point he was actually an alcoholic who, according to him, never did most or anything of what the Old Testament says he did.

This movie actually did Ghost Rider a thousand times better than the sequel no one asked for did. I watched it a thousand times and I still couldn't get myself to like it.
Spirit of Vengeance was still better then many marvels movies we don't talk about today *cough* eternals. While I agree spirit of Vengeance isn't great, it still good and showed rider psychotic side for non comic readers.

Cage fit this role like a glove. Say what you will about this movie, but you can’t deny the fact that Nicolas Cage played the role of Johnny Blaze (aka Ghost Rider) so flawlessly. It’s like a role he was born to play. And the fact that he is a huge fan of the Ghost Rider comics helps a lot. So that’s how he knew how to do the character justice.

The second he used the Contract of San Vanganza, he gets a whole towns worth of doomed souls inside him. He literally made himself vulnerable to Ghost Rider's most OP ability by using a weapon that his father, Mephisto, created. The dude was literally invincible to Ghost Rider until he did this, which is the stupid part. You'd think he'd remember the only reason Johnny even brought the contract to him was because there was no way to kill him if he doesn't have a soul. The contract would give him all the souls of San Vanganza to burn, as all those souls were doomed to be in hell.
I find it the best how Ghost Rider inside of Johnny cares about her just as much as Johnny does

It actually makes perfect sense that Blackheart decided to absorb 1000 souls - at the time he did it, Johny was already transformed back into his human form. He was basically caught by suprise.
The problem I have is that you expect something more from power of 1000 evil souls - especially since it's supposed to be a fundation of "New Hell". You expect this Legion thing to at least be some kind of Balrog like creature with reality warping powers to boot, yet he is basically a discout T-1000, except not as threating and much less cool.
He's probably still new to it hence why he didn't go full potential

It would’ve made more sense for him to make the souls fight for him like an army instead of stupidly absorbing them and getting the penance stare. All those people he sucked dry (no pun intended) and he could’ve turned them into demon zombies who pledge their allegiance to him.
The second ghost rider movie sucked in my opinion but at least Mephistopheles knew to have more than 4 people as his entourage.
I loved this movie, but I never understood Blackheart's goals with the contract... He seemed to get weaker when he got the contract. He was actually more powerful as Blackheart. The only ability it seemed to give him was advanced regeneration, but he was more skilled a fighter before he became Legion so he could avoid most of the Ghost Rider's attacks and seemed fairly resistant to Ghost Rider's fire attacks (at least, somewhat resistant in that the fire just made him stop rather than do actual damage) which was his major mode of attack. Plus the movie forgot about that power he used in the bar to sap the life out of people and he doesn't use that at all in this fight.

He was overwhelmed by the power. You could see it as his face shifted demonic traits. He was stronger, but much less in control, and that cost him.
technically excluiding the penance stare weakness,he grew in power countless times and i bet he hoped to finish the rider in the mortal form...but he ran out of mer...i mean luck.
Blackheart himself in the Marvel 616 comics is already called "Legion".
The ghost rider contains the power of hell fire. If Blackheart wants to absorb Johnny's soul power then he would have to absorb the ghost rider too. And Johnny's soul belongs to Blackhearts father and his father replaced it with the ghost rider.
Blackheart doesn't have a soul therefore Ghost Riders penance stare was useless however he didnt stop to think that absorbing other souls would end up allowing Ghost rider to punish those souls instead which is why he ended up being so shocked.
Its also cool that at certain moments you can see Blackheart's face in the flames reacting to the pain of others.
I love this ending of him taking his soul by making him looking at him in the eyes.

Coming back from just having watched Spirit of Vengeance and Willy's Wonderland, it really made me appreciate this movie and Nicolas Cage's acting.
If you really like ghost rider stuffs, i recommend also watching Marvel's agent of shield ghost rider episodes.

If Ghost Rider actually had his chance to fight directly it'd be an easy win. This is considering that Blackheart had several "minions" working for him and they were all easily beaten by Ghost Rider too.

Funny thing, Ghost Rider actually used it on him in a comic. Apparently he actually ended up liking it, and then proceeded to curbstomp the Rider afterward. That's what I recall at least.
