    Talk about haters gonna hate... If your a long time subscriber you would already know that Shane knows all about Kodi & Plex. And at no point did he suggest to anyone that you should should stop using Plex or Kodi immediately, stop using your NAS etc... He just sharing with us what he's using. I just appreciate him showing an alternate solution. I like the Zappiti client aspect of this as well. Keep up the great work Shane!!!!!! Love the content!!!!!

    Shane, good follow-up!
    The Zappiti NAS isn't for everyone and thought I would add some things that weren't covered...
    it only makes complete bit for bit ISO of everything on the disc and does so using both AnyDVD AND MakeMKV
    Has on board m.2 for cache
    Uses RAID 5, ONLY 1 disc redundancy (can only lose one HDD of the 8). So if using (8) 16tb HDD, you have 112tb of space.
    The Ironwolf Pro will be releasing the 18tb HDD shortly and maybe the 16tb will come down in price a little, or perhaps the 14tb will...
    In comparison to the Kaleidescape Terra, it maxes out at 40tb with also 1 HDD redundancy, and backs up to their server. I can't imagine the cost, let alone adding a player like the Stratos...
    In another video Shane interviews with Zappiti/France developer Raphael Tabutin that states the USB ports can not be used to attach/copy from external HDD. This was done to prevent viruses. So you need to have a stable network and factor in things such as your bus speed of your PC when transferring previous movies.
    The Zappiti NAS can copy simultaneous 4 UHD's BUT only using their external drives (3). Blu-ray can be done using any external optical drive...
    Lastly, I might add that after backing up 7 entire disc UHD movies I went through 340gb. You WILL burn through a lot of HDD space and this is where the Zappiti NAS shines...
    I've not made the plunge, but am close and have spent many emails to Raphael getting this info directly from him...

      Kaleidescape Terra doesn’t have redundancy, only the older Premiere lineup did. Since Encore (Terra and Strato) content is only digitally purchased (from K) all purchases can be restored in the event of a hard drive failure and is the reasoning behind no raid.

      I agree with you 100%. This is convenient yet not practical and way too much money for a simple task. I am a big fan of Oppo and Zappiti. From Zappiti I do own The Zappiti Pro 4K HDR , Zappiti One SE 4K HDR. What I don't like about Zappiti is their Android Versions. They are way behind and you will never ever will have the latest Android OS. This applies same towards Dune too - I have their Dune Max Vision 4K, still the same. This effect me in many ways. Also Zappiti , it has lots of issues when you are trying to sync your account across multiple Zappiti devices. I also agree with lots of people in here - This product is GREAT, I mean Zappiti NAS ripper. Having said so, I do agree with many in here. I do have above mentioned products plus the Panasonic 9000. I consider above are top range high-end Audio and Video products. Yet this NAS ripper by Zappiti is way over-priced in my opinion for LIMITED FEATURES. I am a slave for high-end AV products as you can get the best out of your contents. Their NAS Ripper is something that I wouldn't consider. Like many have mentioned here, there are way too many options to have 1 to 1 ripping with lossless AV. My above motioned products runs across my house by ripping them to a NAS, ( I made my own NAS ). I run 700 TB NAS at the moment that I am posting this - and I use like couple of '' Media-bridge 8bay's enclosures connected to my OPPO UDP-205 and and my Zappiti Pro 4K HDR ( Fast transfer USB C to USB 3.0 ). Via these I have interconnected and synced across my house and my main Home-Theater room. All I use is a couple of Media-bridge 8 Bays, Make MKV. I use Zappiti, their Film user interface , Kodi. Oh, I do have couple of Nvidia Shield TV Pro's - which I use them for streaming Apps. Like many others have mentioned here, you still can get near fantastic decent quality AV from NVIDIA too. You really don't need any of my above mentioned items either. With a low budget you still can have an amazing home theater too. This Zappiti NAS is great, great convenience, far from being particle. If you are willing to work a bit You can have an amazing film hall with bit spent. Make MKV gives you full bit to bit AV. I hope @SpareChange will do a full in-depth review of upcoming Zappiti Reference Series ( Player ). Cheers.

I'll admit that rolling back the firmware on my bluray drive and it is faster that make mkv by about 30 min. They make enough money off each unit to set it at that price so good for them. Surprised that anyone paying this much just wouldn't be more satisfied with streaming. I will say even if they cut the price in half I would still go with Plex over that

    It's a nice turnkey product for sure. I thought about getting one a few years ago, but if you are someone with a huge (and growing) collection, who religiously stores all physical media online in full iso formats like I do, the initial cost and inevitable ongoing drive expansion cost is not worth it in my view. I opted to create my own ( fairly turn-key) setup with an older laptop and three UHD burners that rip about 3 discs in about 1.5hours. My storage is a 10-bay NAS running two raid 0 5-bay sets, which are faster reads than raid 5. If you have a vast online collection or is steadily growing, I would not recommend relying on raid 5 as your only backup. Mine auto-backs up to two inexpensive 5 bay USB enclosures that can be fully restored in less than a day via USB 3. I have been a long fan of Zappiti and own a couple of their players and love them. Great for binge-watching :) However, with a little sweat equity, you can get much more for much much less .

    Nice review. I’ve got a complete zappiti setup, with the NAS, cinema pro, one and mini. It all works great, I still use mkv on occasions as the nas does use loads more storage.
    A few points were noting:
    1) The movie wall is much quicker using the nasrip than any other standalone nas - probably twice as fast.
    2) forced subtitles rip fine on Blu Ray but not on 4k - these are ones I specifically use mkv for if I know they have forced subs in the film.
    3) VC-1 files playback perfectly through the nasrip and zappiti, whereas they stutter on mkv rips.
    Overall I’m really pleased with it, it’s simple to use and has been rock solid reliable for the few months I’ve owned it.
    P.S The cinema pro edition is absolutely stunning!

      @goffe2282 Před 3 lety

      Here's the thing though..... if you want to set up a proper NAS yourself then it's actually really expensive. Even using free software like FreeNAS you still need a metric ton of hard drives, especially if you are wripping 4k content, and you cannot go for the cheap stuff. You need error correcting memory, and you need drives that even though they need not be enterprise drives they do need to be designed for use in a NAS like the WD REDs that cost around $300 each for the 10TB versions.
      Last I checked I'd have to pay around 4-5k to make my own NAS, and on top of that ripping is a problem as getting players that can rip 4K content is still not trivial (unless something new has come along).
      Add to this that it's difficult to find a player that plays back ISOs then this becomes a feasible alternative. I really hate all of the hoops I have to jump through just to back up physical media that I have purchased. It is what it is. I'd much prefer having a computer that does everything (gaming, movies, the works) but it seems like the industry has us squarely locked in these kinds of proprietary solutions in an attempt to battle piracy. We're the ones who keep getting screwed.

    Awesome product no doubt. My concern is the price. I mean I get that you pay for plug and play. I love my Zappiti Neo (and loved my Pro 4K HDR before that), I dont mind paying abit extra for UI and stuff that just works. However....if you look at the U-NAS 810 case you can see its exactly the same case (without the UHD drive). You can get a U-NAS 810P for 499 USD (or just the case and add top components yourself). Add another 100 for a UHD Friendly optical drive and you end up paying 3000 USD for not downloading FreeNAS or U-NAS Operating system and installing. Am I missing something??

  • @danhowdle9508

    As much as I admire the convenience of one of these you have to ask yourself is avoiding the 'work' of occasionally popping a disc into a blu-ray player really worth $4500 🤷‍♂️
    I don't think so. Especially since it takes me about 20 seconds from shelf to playing in my setup. I would have to watch that disc at least 45 times to make this 'time-saving' versus the 15-20 minutes to rip the disc. I guess this is for people who have hit a complete upgrade wall and can't think of anything else to add to their home theatre.

    • @goffe2282
      @goffe2282 Před 3 lety +6

      You are of course absolutely right. The reason I use a NAS is that I can have all my disks in storage rather than on my wall (I like clean walls) and for backup. The last is not to be understated.
      With that said, ripping films is a hassle and the movie industry is hell bent on making it as hard as they legally can.

    I was wondering why this seemed so similar to the MyMovies approach... Turns out the Zappiti approach is modelled on the MyMovies approach and even licences the MyMovies metadata!
    I really wish they would port the backend for MyMovies to sit on FreeNAS, and an updated front end that's maybe a bit more platform-agnostic. Sort of like taking the best bits of Plex but improving it with the collection management, auto-ripping, bit-for-bit disc copies and so forth.

  • @jbdragon3295
    @jbdragon3295 Před 3 lety +1

    Remember, a NAS is not a backup!!! It basically allows you to have a large overall HDD. If 1 HDD takes a dump, you can remove that drive and poop in a replacement. But other things can happen where you end up losing all of your data. For example, your 1 hard drive takes a dump, you put a new one in and as your NAS is rebuilding your system onto that new drives, putting excessive wear on the other drives, another HDD takes a dump on you!! You’ve basically lost all your files!!! If you were using raid 6, that allows 2 HDD fails, but you have less storage.
    That was just one example. The NAS could take a dump. You could get robbed, your house could burn down, etc, etc. which is why you should have another NAS for a backup, if it’s off site, even better. Back up everything locally, then put that NAS at a family’s house or something where you can plug it into the internet and then have your main NAS backup to it every night. Most support rsync already built in that should allow you to do just that.
    If your file is only at one place, it’s not backed up. I have almost 30TB on my own NAS, and it’s backed up to another, cheaper NAS. All it is used for us to backup my main NAS. So keep that in mind. Ya, it’s expensive to get another NAS and a bunch more HDD, but better than losing all that data. Even if your backup of your movie is all on disks. That will take days to rip all those discs once again.

  • @ccateni28
    @ccateni28 Před 3 lety +4

    There needs to be a cheaper option.
    Most people like me who are getting into 4k can only deal with so much money at a time that the nas you showed here would be extremely over budget.
    A $300 or $500 nas with 4k support and atmos/dtsX and vision would be good enough for most people. But they have to figure that out if they want the mass adoption they would need to keep these devices in production.

      You can do this way cheaper if you're willing to do a little more manual work. Trust me, time is money ,and this solution in the long run is expensive as well. Well the NAS doesn’t have playback software, quite likely won’t support 4K output @ frame rates up to and including 60Hz and HDR, has no provision for a remote control and has no UI ... so the same kind of reasoning behind why any other NAS without local playback functionality can’t be connected to a TV directly.
      An 8 bay NAS stacked with drives is far more noise than I would want in my living room - my 140TB Synology is housed well away from my living room as it is simply too noisy to share space with when the drives are running and the fans are running. Ultimately if you don’t ‘get’ why it is the way that it is then you’re not its target market but for anyone that basically has aspirations to a Kaleidescape library but hasn’t the budget for it then this is a cheap and reliable (ish) solution that can be supported by an installer.

    Copying is easy, except for 3 titles of the 145 in our collection that won't rip, and 3 BD titles well. The larger problem is in playback of 4K files, ( stored on a 2nd gen. NAS, with 128 Tb storage capacity,) which is problematic in that they start and stop, BD copy of same title plays fine.
    I first noticed this issue in playback on my PC, before I installed a 4K Samsung QLED 49" display. Raphael has helped me, said the 4K files on my NAS aren't corrupt, thought it might be a faulty MB in the NAS. So far hasn't followed up, and he seems increasingly unreachable, I am aware of his expanded role with Zappiti, which brought a crushing workload, exacerbated by the new gear roll out, and more owners of Zappiti gear globally, due to you and other content creators on CZcams , and other platforms reviewing their products, ( I ran across your vids 1st,) it's very frustrating. Zappiti needs more technical support, we all have spent big for this.

    Well as the owner of the system you can not admin it yourself. You want to add another hdd or remove one you need to call them to do it for you.
    The system runs on windows home server with a preinstalled admin account that only zappiti can access you can not log in to windows home server. They admin it with software like Teamviewer which is also the way they add or remive hard drives on „your“ NAS. So is this a solution I would recommend? Absolutely NO.

    Tell me about the "important note: US Reg doesn't allow 'private copy'", please? Is simply copying the disc to the NAS considered "private copy"?
    That seems to be whats happening if i'm not mistaken. And, i see it says to call the rep to find alternatives.... did you have to do that? what did they say if so.
    if what i'm asking is true, dont we see at the beginning of every movie, "$250,000 fine or imprisonment for each offense..."? so, in this case, if i'm not mistaken, this is a pretty high risk that studios could decide to go after the little guy (like they did with bearshare) and folks start getting fines for using a NAS.
    Granted, no one really expects that to happen, but nor did they when it happened with the music industry did it.
    If i'm not mistaken, Kaleidescape wound up having to offer a NAS like player that required you to have the disc in the drive to play the movie - even though it's stored on the server as a result of a lost copyright infringement case. (Wasn't their idea to have to do that, but it was either that or go out of business.)

I have my collection, much larger now, safely tucked away and I can pull up my movies ala Netflix style anywhere I am. The wife loves it because she doesn't have to go hunting for movies and the kids keep their sticky fingers off my plastic. Best part is, the copies on Plex are the same quality as the disks and I spent much less on the basic hardware than this setup. If convenience is $800 bucks, then I'll do the work myself. Man that's pricey... It took me a grand total of 8 hours to work out how to rip UHD blurays including retaining Dolby Vision. I'm not sure how much a Shield TV is in the US, but based on the AU price it'd be less than the USD 250 for the Shield TV Pro which includes Dolby Vision and a Plex server which based on the 4 seconds of interface I saw in this clip was far more smooth. A combo of MakeMKV and TSMuxer means that I don't have to copy all the extra audio/subtitle languages so that saves space and is far better from a usability point of view. I suppose you don't keep the menus.... but isn't that always a plus? I suppose if you want to go into special features maybe?
    So I suppose if I allow 1k for an 8 bay NAS, 2k for 8x 16TB drives and maybe an extra 500 for the shield and a lifetime Plex Pass etc we're still at half the price - and this is being rough. I'm sure you could get it way lower.
    So.... Is the Zappiti easier? Yes... Is 8 hours of your time worth the extra 4-6k? ... If it is then:
    Dear Mr Elon Musk. I'm an aerospace engineer who'd very much like to work for Space X! Included in my resume is the ability to set up a 4k ripping system...
    Seriously. USD 500/hour. 8 hour day. 40 hours a week. 50 weeks a year...
    Ok, so if you literally earn less than USD 1million per year then this is not the product for you. If you do, then congrats, I guess.

      Kaleidescape tried this in it's original days. It got sued, fought it in court, and lost.

      @@RandomUserName92840 Little more to Kaleidescape then that. This was all about there disk vaults. It was a mess on both parties. As pertaining to Zappiti, its different. Depending on where you are in the world, laws vary. Most agree that if you can rip your movies from Disk, then you need to save the disk, file it away. Do not share and defiantly do not upload them to and web sites.
