Hey Librarian, love your channel. Here's some Historical context in case you're interested:
The game takes place in 1916, commonly referred to as the bloodiest year in the war, likely in the Battle of Verdun. German General Erich Falkenhayn knew that Germany, due to its position in Europe could not win a long drawn out war, and was planning a massive offensive against Artois, a sector held by British forces in order to secure victory in the Western front. However, he knew that such a victory would not be possible if the British forces there were reinforced by the French. So he planned a diversionary assault on a target the French could absolutely not afford to lose: the City of Verdun.
For centuries Verdun had been a symbol of French strength, with a number of massive military bunkers and fortresses such as Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux, but by 1915, its defense had become severely neglected. If the Germans captured the area, it would be a devastating blow to French military and public morale. The French Republic was democratic, and elections still took place during the war. Losing Verdun would be a disaster for the current government's public image. Thus the French threw their armies into the defensive positions, and the Battle of Verdun began. A million shells were fired in the opening bombardment of Verdun alone, and could actually be heard away as far as in England.
Initial attacks were successful and the Germans even managed to capture a few of the Forts, but as the advance lost momentum, the battle once again slowed to a stalemate. While Initial attacks had seen success, the Germans had yet to capture their primary objectives, and this was very frustrating. Eventually Falkenhayn came to the realization that too many resources, and lives had been spent trying to take this city, and he had to make the decision whether to dig in and defend what gains were made and save the supplies and men for the real attack on Artois, or go all in for the capture of Verdun. He would chose the latter, to strike was all the strength they could muster and press on. But the French would not give up, and a new motto was adopted by the defenders of Verdun: "Ils ne passeront pas," (they shall not pass). For 303 days the French and Germans fought fiercely.
It was a slaughter. Estimates for casualties are from 700,000-1,000,000 men. On July 1st 1916, the British would begin their attack on the Somme to relieve the pressure on the French, and the Russians would continue their offensive in the east. The three largest battles of the war all raging at the same time, the Germans had their hands tied. Falkenhayn would be fired from his position for his failure to take either Verdun or Artois. During the battle of Verdun, the French had implemented a rotation system that would result in almost every soldier fighting for at least some time in Verdun, so the battle became significant in the French collective psyche.
Conditions were absolutely horrid, with some men going insane from the constant day and night bombardment. Bodies that would be buried by shelling would be dug up by more shelling. Men crying for help out in no man's land, dying slowly, but beyond the reach of their medics. Screaming in horror as the massive rats came for them, and began eating them alive in some cases. The food, medical supplies, ammunition, everything was scarce as the French had only one road to Verdun for the trucks to supply them. But the spirit of Resistance and the bravery of the defenders allowed the French to hold onto Verdun, and true to their promise "They did not Pass."

As a native German speaker, the prisoner's constant monologue is actually really disturbing.
It's what you'd expect of someone who has been held prisoner in a bunker that was exterminated by a monster. Mostly just asking the player not to open the door so the monster can't come in, and some rambling about wanting to go home. And he keeps repeating that he doesn't know anything.
    Sad-disturbing, rather than threatening-disturbing.

    • @alameachan
      @alameachan Před 2 měsíci +1

Native speaker here too, and for me the disturbing undertones were ruined by how stilted the German was. I think that there was a lot of room to improve on.

since you are a jacque jean pierre gabrielle or louis, and you wore a helmet: its the later part of the war.
funny history fact: early on the french army did not commission the wearing of helmets, but facing immense casualties done mostly by headshots, they let someone design a helmet, the top brass then becried that the amounts of head injuries on the field, while they neglected to correlate the lack of death with head injuries because the same amount of people who would've died to headshots are now just injured.
the hardhat was a wide success but no one appreciated it in its time.

Not sure if anyone's done something like this yet; but I wanted to add a little historical context to some of the stuff we see here. I'd include timestamps, but the video is 4 hours long. Don't think I'll be doing that.
I was curious about the flashlight he's using, it's such a unique design I wanted to know if it was actually real, and contemporary- and as it turns out, it is! It appears to be a German dynamo-powered lamp, or "Magnetlampe", which was captured from a German soldier, probably. I don't know if the french started producing their own after it was initially captured from the Germans by the Americans in 1918. The ring and the cord, when pulled, spins an armature through a magnetic field, creating a charge and lighting the bulb for a number of seconds. Although interestingly- Our friend Henri here seems to be using it wrong. According to some of the images I found, it was usually affixed to a strap and worn on the breast, affixed to the uniform I believe. Maybe he just lost the strap or something, who knows.
The Roman Tunnels are very interesting to me. I wish we had more information regarding them.
According to the wiki, the tunnels may have been built as early as the 2nd century BCE, as they contain a bust of one G - GRACCHVS, likely Gaius Gracchus, who lived between 154 BCE and 121 BCE. He was a citizen, a soldier, a reformist politician and he was tribune between 123 and 122. He had a brother, Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, and they were known together as the Gracchi Brothers. If you know anything about Roman history, this is not a good sign for our buddy Gracchus as this means his opponents used political unrest after his tribunate to march on his supporters, purging them. This was the first instance of political violence in the Roman Republic, and this kicked off the Late Republic Period. Whoops.
As some of the notes state, the language is latin but its contents do not align with Roman culture, the "cult" and unfamiliar culture described is Mithraism.
The Amnesia series takes Mithraism and runs with it, but it *is* a real world religion which was present in the Roman Empire, particularly among the army, from the 1st to 4rth centuries CE. To my understanding (which is not complete) it's a descendant of pre-zoroastrian iranian religion, more specifically the Mithras of Mithraism is likely to be Mithra, god of the sun, war, justice and contract. Mithraism absolutely extended further than france, as London holds a large, quite spectacular Mithraeum- these are the places of worship of the cult, which are usually found underground, in caves and such. so the tunnels here are a series of structures likely connected to a Mithraeum.
Indeed the statue seen at 3:34:30 is in line with depictions of Mithras. Some of them, at least. Clean shaven, clothed, curly hair, wielding in his hand the Mithraic Orb which Amnesia invented. The one missing feature is his hat- which I believe is a phrygian cap- though it may simply not be very prominent, obscured, or lost with time. He is also not seen sacrificing a bull here, which is a thing he does weirdly often in statuary. In other statuary he's flanked by two additional figures whose identities I don't know off the top of my head, and accompanied by a dog, a snake, and scorpion.
Speaking of 3:34:~~ I too wish I could read latin. If anyone by chance can, or has found the inscriptions already translated on wikipedia- please share them in the replies!
Now, the unfamiliar culture the author of the note encountered is fascinating to me- because the overt implications are that he's seeing internal records of the rituals and practices of the Mithraic Mysteries, the proper name for the cult- as it was a mystery cult.
Mystery Cults are quite common on the ancient world, Greece had the Dionysian and Eleusinian Mysteries, which worshipped Dionysus and Demeter & Persephone respectively. The basic gist is that there are usually levels of initiation to these religions, and with each increase in level comes greater understanding- their exact beliefs and practices are kept secret and usually known only to the highest echelons, and in the case of all the above mystery cults- this knowledge is forever lost to us.
They made probably one of the most important discoveries regarding classical pre-christian religion ever, basically.
There's other things to note regarding classical religion- a "Bacchanal" is an intense drunken celebration, with religious connotations. It refers to Bacchus, the Roman name of Dionysus- of the dionysian mysteries. Whether this word was encountered in the latin texts or used as a descriptor coincidentally I do not know and cannot assume, but that's very interesting.
Of the few things we know of the Dionysian mysteries, we can say they were more focused on wine and its intoxicating effects overall than dionysus himself- they often got absolutely plastered, drunk and high, and the intent or belief was that you were altering your state of consciousness and being, tapping into the divine, uninhibited, primordial madness of Dionysus, and thus bringing yourself close to him, tapping into his power, even.
That's all for now- I'm not quite through the video yet, but I'll update this as it goes if I find more things to comment on.
Edit: Thanks Librarian for the like and the thoughtful, well-made content! Hope this was a good read!
EDIT edit: Apparently editing the comment removes the little heart thingy. Oops.
All subsequent readers are just gonna have to take my word for it- He was here! It was real!

IM SO HYPE TO WATCH THIS, ILL EDIT AS I WATCH. Thank you for heeding our word, I think I suggested this to you three whole times, I absolutely cannot wait to dive into your experience with this terrifying game.
    Final editing thoughts:
I enjoyed watching this long play, solely because I've been waiting for so long for you to play it. Now, you are right, you did miss quite a few things, something that is very important to the plot. You blew the exit before checking Lambert's locker. You did say earlier in the Chapel when you found the first note, that you felt worse knowing that there is likely a part 2. Well, there is. I won't go into detail too much here if you want to go back to your save and check. Other than the mysterious Lambert, you did a fantastic job with narrating this playthrough, it almost emulates how I was feeling when I first played, that feeling of not wanting to push forward through the dark, even if it isn't dark, pushing through the unknown while on a time limit was utterly terrifying, especially if there was a blackout and you had to make a mad dash back to the safe room with the beast on your tail. This game is NUTS on the New Game + and Shell Shock mode, it would honestly be worth another video playthrough for just those modes, because it really is a different experience. And similar to Garry's Mod, this game like most other Amnesia titles, has a workshop for all sorts of custom maps and games, new experiences in the Amnesia: The Bunker style. I really recommend checking them out, especially the ones that won this year's Frictional Games Mod Jam for the bunker. I doubt you'll make any more videos on Amnesia: The Bunker, but if you do I'm here for it all the way. Now if you don't decide to go back and play or check anything; I'll leave a spoiler warning ahead and a sum of the story in regards to Lambert.
SPOILERS FOR THE MAIN STORY, DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW
As we know from the beginning, Lambert was injured, and that should have been his tomb as he states in his first note. How this happened? Henri's note was stored in his locker, explaining a thing we hear at the beginning of the game, a game between Lambert and Clément, involving dice as told by audial context and by the fact that there are also a set of dice in Clément's locker. Clément states in his note that either one of them were assigned to go on patrol that night, and they decided to play a game of chance to see who would have to go. Well, also stated in Clément's note, that little scoundrel used a sleight of hand trick to win the game, ensuing a little revenge for previous pranks and mischief done to him, sending Lambert out on patrol that night, because "Ah, fate's a bastard.", and he was out. When Clément noticed that Lambert had not returned the next morning, he became severely worried that he may have gotten his best friend killed. So he sets out in the night like we see in the beginning to find his best friend, and he does. Lambert is wounded and has fallen into the pit around the excavation site for the "Roman Tunnels", and Clément comes to his rescue, retrieving him a trickle of "spring water", that Lambert described as "-cool and crisp, with a strange sweet taste." Now this water does look.. strange when we get to examine it later. But I won't go into detail about why until after I finish the story point. "Never has water felt more nourishing than that, administered by a dear friend's hand." Little did he know, the fate of the bunker laid upon him now, all because of one sip. After Lambert, Clément carried him across no man's land, only to be fired upon by a German patrol. Henri was hit, dropping Lambert where he would be presumed dead, but we all know thats not the case. Lambert woke, finding Clément injured, his life fading. He found the strength to carry Clément through no man's land and back to their bunker, where he would be administered to the sickroom with his Amnesia (title drop!) And a few days later, that's where Henri's mysterious journey begins. However, Lambert's journey continues too. Lambert would go on to mention that he was feeling stronger and stronger in his notes, but everything began to turn for the worse. "And yet I don't feel tired. Instead I feel this... ITCH. This sense that there are things that I must do. Purpose. A bloody purpose higher than any of man's petty wars...", "I feel strange myself, can hardly find the words to write. My hands feel so odd. Gnarled, bulbous. Like they don't belong to me." (Lambert's Journal Part 2) Is it starting to come together now. Lambert felt stronger, but now he feels wrong. Like something is happening to him. "A bloody thought so seductive. It calls... It calls... It calls...", he writes. Reynard was murdered the next day, but Lambert has no recollection of doing such a thing nor will they show the soldiers the body. But on July 18, 1916. It was over. "Blood on my hands blood on my hands blood on my hands. Their pain. I want more of it. I can hear Trembley now. Coming closer... closer... closer... I can get what I want from him." - and there ends Lambert's journal. Lambert was responsible for the killings and the bodies strung up, but how do we explain the monster. Well, lets go back on ourselves, to the moment Lambert was given that "spring water". Well, it looks to be an odd blue color, bluer than water should even be. Lets go further back in the Amnesia series, Rebirth and A Machine for Pigs both have this strange liquid known as "Vitae" in them. And this vitae is secreted from the blood of humans who are suffering. Let's take a gander here at what World War I was. Well, to put it simply, a shit ton of suffering and death. Blood soaked the land, the water, just about everything during the time of war. Prime breeding grounds for vitae, and prime breeding grounds for a Ghoul to take form from drinking the stuff. So Lambert drinks this, and undergoes a gnarly transformation, and then proceeds to stalk you throughout the rest of the game. Kind of screwed up right? People do argue against this idea because we haven't seen a Ghoul as large as Lambert in the series, but some theorize that the stress and emotional state could quicken the transformation, and depending on the situation, may even make the transformation more severe, leaving us with a "Super Ghoul". And the note by the pillbox confirms the situation even further by saying "I think it knew who I was?".
    Conclusion:
So there's that to munch on, sorry for the long explanation but there really isn't a way of shortening it. But thats the story, and if you even see this, Librarian, and do read it, I hope I was clear and coherent enough with the story. If not, for those who did want the complete story, there you have it. It's all just the pulls and twists of fate.
    C'est la vie.

I know they won’t make one but I’d like to see a game about Henri and Lambert in WW1. I am a big WW1 nerd and I think this game takes place during the battle of Verdun (February 21, 1916 - December 18, 1916). It seems they found out about the monster in middle July giving them a few months to work with, or they could have them transferred to Verdun only halfway through the game with it ending with the start of The Bunker.
I would even play a game where you play as Sdt. Boisrond (the guy who gives you the revolver and gets dragged into a hole at the start) and all of your comrades die one by one and you have to survive, eventually getting injured and the ending is you talking to Henri.

Pretty cool is that this monster appearance interfere with electricity causing light to flicker, just like Pigmen does in Amnesia A Machine For Pigs, does that mean that liquid that Clément gave to Lambert was essence combined with something that cause electric inteference, just like Compund X (Stuff that make Pigmens) that was combined essence with radioactive material?

The rats in this game are interesting to me, it would be funny but also a bit sad if the game never explained why they are like they are. However it wouldn’t be too inaccurate for the game to just go ‘well they are just like that’. Rats were vicious and monstrous in ww1, reports of them being as big as cats and everything. I remember reading a diary from an American engineer of them sleeping in a barn, dirty, no beds, with rats scurrying overhead. At one point one rat landed on a comrades face at which point the poor soldier lost it and started crying for his mother
