The 1950s: The Boom Period of Wedding Gowns After World War II

  • After the shortages of World War II, women were ready for a little luxury. And brides didn't want to skimp on the lace or fabric.
In 1947, French designer Christian Dior caused a sensation when he introduced his "new look," hour-glass dresses with long, flowing skirts - skirts made of yards and yards of cloth.
The billowing skirts and wasp-waist designs evolved in the 1950s and may have peaked around 1956. There are also many other notable designs in this period.

The background music seems a bit dark for a video full of wedding gowns.

Such intense spooky music for a video like this, why?

Thank you for the lovely photographs of the brides. The music was not a good selection because it made me think these beautiful women were murdered. I understand some of these ladies have departed from us, please change the music so it is more appropriate and so I am less anxious when viewing these photographs.
None of us want to be with such a dark thought of any of these women.

Why is it that today's modern bridal dresses are over the top so "revealing" ??? Plunging neck lines down to the waistline, (how tacky) these 1950' dresses are really pretty. And the veils are gorgeous, lots of brides don't even wear veils. The veil completes the wedding dress, NOT a lousy ring of flowers or an ugly little side hat, I mean, what the he'll is that all about ? My sister in law wore some flowers in her hair, she has poor taste when it comes to fashion sense. The veils in this video are gorgeous.

Finances. Cut expenses by eliminating shoulders which add expense in producing and fitting, bring in more profit. Still charge a bundle because The Business figured most newlyweds will spend the money anyway. Then there's the old story where bride finds out shortly before wedding the church doesn't allow revealing fashions (strapless), this is where a bolero jacket to cover the shoulders come in handy. There are also more weddings these days that are very casual so typically a long dress is not worn.

My parents were married in 1954. I have their wedding album. Her gown was stunning. Slightly off shoulder, sweetheart neckline, A very full skirt made completely of tulle. Some sparkles here and there. And the color was a very pale pink. It was my mom's 2nd wedding and she didn't wear white. I would have worn it for my wedding in 1982, but she cut it short as cocktail dress to wear to a party.

Oh my, what a collection. It shows how such fashion can make a plain looking woman look fantastic, you know the look when she walks down the aisle everyone stands at attention. Besides brides didn't want to skimp on fabric, it also allowed designers great flexibility in creating gowns.
Like others have said, the music is terrible. I get impression content creator doesn't truly appreciate these fashions.

I married in 1950, wedding gowns are as pretty now as then. Timeless. I hate strapless. They all look the same to me. Too much bare skin showing. Fine for a prom not for a wedding. Blushing bride these days? My foot!!

Examine the current state of the world. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 states "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" Jesus is coming back. Are you ready?
