  • Our younger generation has rarely seen magicians other than david copperfield, david blaine or chris angel. So i'd like to share with everyone the many greats of magic, past and present from the documentary, Heros of Magic. In this clip we have Fred Kaps.

    Everything about his handling is terrific. The double take, the calmness of his movements. This is a lesson for those that move fast. If you make your moves flow, the audience doesn't catch as easily. Believe it or not, the audience thinks you have fast hands when you move slowly.

    Thanks Shaun for a peek behind the curtain. These are fantastic. I've done enough magic to understand the passion these perfumers are talking about. To perform magic and to be funny with humility is quite the art.

    There's Fred Kaps ... and then there's everybody else. Is there anyone comparable today? No one name immediately comes to mind.

    @mtpascoe - Henry Hay said that about Tommy Nelson Downs. Henry and Tommy both did magic for a neighbor, the neighbor said to Henry; "You're good, but you're not as fast as Tommy." Henry responded; "The reason he's so good is that he's slow, not fast." Tommy said; "Never tell them you're slow, let them think you're fast."

    Actually, it is "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin. Marvin Hamlish did one arrangement of it that was very popular.

    @TheStreetMagician3 - It was Marvin Hamlish ripping of Scott Joblin. This song is called "The Entertainer." Look up "The Maple St. Rag" and see if there isn't WAY to much similarity there.

    @mtpascoe - I have the Ed Sullivan show (it's on a collection of Beatles appearances) and I felt the audience didn't realize the card was supposed to be coming back. They weren't laughing because they thought he was really messing it up!

    Brilliant handling of the homing card. Would be great as a close-up trick. This is better than the clip on the Ed Sullivan show because you can see the faces of the cards. At first, I didn't know what he was doing. It kind of looked like you was screwing up. I hope the audience at the time didn't think so either.

    @JohnnySilver78 What is the problem. I am helping magic students with the methods to the effect so they can decide if they want to study it further or if it suits their performance conditions.

    @JohnnySilver78 Nice speaking to you Johnny. The art wont be destroyed. When books came out, they said it would destroy magic. The same about TV. The same about the internet, Actually, magic is thriving more than ever due to educators like me. Good luck with your magic!

    @RS1963 He doesn't start with the ring on the table because it would snag the hook up. Anyway, everyone knows this is done now using INVISIBLE THREAD not magnets. It's a fine nylon wire commonly used by magicians to levitate small light objects or in PK effects. Why does he use a cork - because it is light and can be supported by the thread. He doesn't perform the floating lead fishing weight for example!!

  • @ejay1118
    @ejay1118 Před 13 lety

    @destructorcreator - Tommy Cooper was a genius at what he did, but I'd rather watch magic being done well than watch it being "messed up" for laughs.

  • @CaraBrimleyRules
    @CaraBrimleyRules Před 13 lety

    The dancing cork is done with Invisible thread - very fine nylon from his shoulder to his finger tips with the cork suspended. The ring starts on his arm and goes over his hand and right round the thread. That's why he starts with the rings on his arm (weird position) and not with the ring on the table!

    I see so many comments on here about so-and-so is better than whats-his-name. It really depends on the viewpoint of each spectator. It's just like guitarists. Someone may say that Eddie Van Halen is the best. Others may say that Jimi Hendrix is the best. There is NO best guitarist or magician. Each person has their own style and persona. A person either likes them or not, for their own reasons. There are very good magicians that know their chops but have a style or persona that is not really likeable. I for instance really don't care for the large stage illusions because to me it's just a trick, not an illusion. When a close-up performer does something right in front of me or even in my hands I am more likely to be amazed. It doesn't mean that stage performers are bad or that close-up magicians are the best. Too much time is spent arguing the point of "who is the best." EACH PERSON WATCHING A PERFORMANCE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION. SO STOP ARGUING!

  • @CaraBrimleyRules
    @CaraBrimleyRules Před 13 lety

    @RS1963 Why doesn't he start with the ring on the table then? Once again I am right as to the method!

    @CaraBrimleyRules you are famous,LOL! ya ok. Over 800 posts? thats just means you talk alot. This video is called Heros of Magic and yes, normal people are watching this. You mean to tell me that all 35,000 of these viewers were magicians? I doubt if you have the years or performing experience to be a teacher. If you had respect for magic, do you think Kaps would appreciate you telling everyone the method? Even magicians are to buy the secret, then decide if they like it or not.

    @eevil123 So do you think Michael's line "Watch me work" (2:38 on his YT C and B vid) is an example of humble patter eg Kaps/Wonder or an example of arrogant patter.
    Noone likes an arrogant magician and that's how Vincent's C and B act comes across.

  • @JohnnySilverMagician
    @JohnnySilverMagician Před 13 lety

    @CaraBrimleyRules why would you write that? Nice job big mouth.

  • @CaraBrimleyRules
    @CaraBrimleyRules Před 11 lety

    Yes Vincent's presentational style is a great shame considering his excellent technique especially with cards. The same could be said of Vernon, an excellent technician, and the magician's magician, but not a top class stage persona. Having said that, Vernon's style was much more humble/natural and vastly preferable to Vincent's smarmy patter.

  • @JohnnySilverMagician
    @JohnnySilverMagician Před 13 lety

    @CaraBrimleyRules that is non-sense. Its called exposure. Some of us make a living from doing this stuff, and people like you giving away the secrets doesnt help. If youre helping students PM them! Dont run your mouth in front of everyone for the world to read. This apparently happens with you alot judging by the comments on your page. And for the record he could start with the ring on the table.

  • @CaraBrimleyRules
    @CaraBrimleyRules Před 13 lety

    It's really inappropriate having Michael come on and speak about humility in magic. If one watches Michael's act the patter is actually quite arrogant. As an example his cups & balls routine where he says "watch me work" as he goes into a false transfer routine. Don't get me wrong, Michael is very nice guy when you meet him at the Circle, but his act does leave something to be desired which is why I don't think he has scaled the heights he should have done despite being an excellent technician.
