How to replace spark plugs and wires on a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L V8 will be covered in this video. However, it is important to note that this exact method applies to all Chevrolet 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L engines from models ranging from the year 2000 - 2014.
Also, the general techniques I use in this video can be applied to any make and model. The tools needed to do this job is as follows;
- A 3/8 rachet
- A 5/8 spark plug socket
- A 1” extension
- Copper-based anti-seize lubricant
- Dielectric grease
- Hose grip pliers
- An assortment of wobble extensions
- A 3/8 cordless rachet
The first step in this job is to disconnect the spark plug wires. Begin up top using a twist and pull method to remove them. The bottom wires can be tougher to remove because the spark plug boots are rubber and they like to grip that porcelain on the spark plug.
This is especially true if it has been a while since it has been tuned up. The best way to remove the lower spark plug wires is to twist back and forth to break that bond. It may take a minute but after twisting for a bit, then try to pull it off, it should come free.
This is where the hose grip pliers come in handy. If you don’t have enough room to get a good pull with your hand, use the hose grip pliers. Slip it around the boot, gently work it back and forth and you can use the exhaust manifold as leverage to pry back on and pull it loose.
Make sure to save the metal-insulator sleeves as you’re going to slip them onto the new wires. Don’t ruin these insulator sleeves as they protect the wires.
Now we go onto removing the spark plugs. Here is where you use the spark plug socket, wobble extension, and flex head rachet. You can do this without a flex head ratchet or a wobble extension, however, it makes it a whole lot easier to do it with these. To make things go a little quicker, I throw my cordless air ratchet to remove the spark plugs faster.
Here’s a quick “Pro Tip” for removing these plugs. On the driver’s side of the engine, there is a lot of room to remove the plugs. However, on the passenger side of the engine, it’s another story. There’s a lot of hoses and wires in our way which makes the job a little more difficult.
Don’t let this intimidate you, this is when a good set of wobble extensions come in handy. Depending on your make and model, you might use different sizes, but you’ll be covered.
In regard to this particular 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L engine, the 2.5” works great for the first three plugs. For the back plug on the passenger side, the 1” extension or no extension at all works great. Start the rachet down low and not from above and slip your socket and extension on and then connect the rachet.
The spark plugs I’m replacing the old ones with are the ones that this vehicle rolled off the assembly line with. They do not require gaping. They are pre-gapped at the factory and they specify that you do not gap them.
This is where I apply the copper anti-seize on the threads before I install them. To install the new plugs using a socket and small extension makes the process a little easier. Thread them, in the same way, they came out.
Put a nice solid torque on each plug but do not overtighten them because if you break them off, you’ll be crying! We hope you enjoyed our video on how to replace spark plugs and wires, make sure to subscribe to the channel so you don't miss our new videos.

This man knows what he is talking about. No substitute for experience. Thanks for all the pro tips and taking the time to help us shade tree mechs. Saved me a lot of cussing.
No problem brother. Glad you enjoyed!
Agree it's a great video, but I still did some cussing for good measure.
@jpautofleetservices1594 Great video I have question 2007 yukon spark plugs wires don't have number like number 1 and number 2 where it go
Going to be doing this to my 2007 Chevy Tahoe and this video was excellent thank you
I just wanna start by saying thank you for the great video! My closest mechanic said $500 to change spark plugs I spent $70, $100 including the tools. Being able to watch this and go pick up everything as listed made this job much easier as I am not a tinker kinda guy. Got it done in about an hr. Runs great again thank you!!
Love it
Here in December 2023, about to do this on my 2012 Yukon 5.3L. Great video man, especially showing nice techniques & tools to make it simpler. I was especially concerned about the passenger side bank but this makes it look a lot less difficult. Thanks so much! Well done.
This was a well put together how-to, thanks!
Best video yet. Saw many terrible videos this morning with no value on this job. Great one man!
Thanks boss!
This video is alot better than the other one from a different mechanic . Great Video .
Great video. Great explanation and edit!! Subscribed!
Sir! Thank you for this valuable information! Like other guys said, the 8th plug is the most complicated but you explained it really good!
The first 9 seconds solved my issue thanks my dude
Thanks for the tip on the 8th plug, most videos skip over it.
Your welcome. The devils always in the details!
@@JPAutoFleet are the insulator sleeves necessary? I tossed them before I realized you’d said to reuse them.
You sure did help me!! Thank you🥰
You are a badass! Very easy to follow, explained in great detail and provide trade hacks! Yes! You sir are a professional! Keep up the good work..
Glad it helped you out
Thank-you so very much! My jobs, back in the "day" at Dads gas station,
were gap spark plugs, do zerks, vacuum/clean cars, bag ice, wring out chamois, & learned how to put vodka in watermelon then chill in ice-machine!! Now come full circle & learning again!
Watermelon vodka sounds amazing! Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Well done video. Great tips. 👍
Perfect video! Thank you so much!
Excellent video bro thanks
Not saying I have more experience than this guy, but I always check the gap. I changed my plugs tonight and one was at .020 and another was completely crushed. There was no gap at all.
great vid thanks
thanks .. great video
You are the king
Great Content Love it Thanks for Your Expertise Bro Made my Job Super Easy 💪🏾💪🏾💯💯
Thank you!
Good explanation
I like how you included the recommended Tq spec. Keep this up for future videos, it is really helpful
If you actually put a torque wrench on it and torque it to the correct spec, in some applications, you'll realize it doesn't need to be as tight as you think it does.
X xx xx is a is a cutie and I will be be there n
@@JPAutoFleet hey man I just replaced my plug wires on my new body style 5.3, they all are the same length and everything but I didn’t see if there was a order they needed to be in, is there a order? Or is it just a plug and play type deal. I’m used to distributor caps lmao
@@JPAutoFleet on my Chevy Monte Carlo ss 5.3 engine I replaced all spark plugs but now it’s saying cylinder 8 is misfire. You think that’s because we didn’t use the grease and also I didn’t realize I brought the copper acdelco plugs instead of the titanium
super informative
Glad it helped
Thank you so much 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕 great help when you dont have a mechanic around or affordable and dont have a man to help good tips for your everyday woman 😍ty 🎈
Love it when the lady's tackle car problems. You go girl!
Great video and was very helpful. I will subscribe. You make it very easy to follow. I have a 08 Suburban 1500 and about to my first tune up on my own. Thanks so much. The spark plugs you have the link for are AC Delco 41-962 Platinum but the ones in the video are the 41-162 Iridium. Just want to give a heads up.
Subscribed 👌
I really want a cordless air ratchet now lol
thax
Exelente
Done a pretty good job 👍. I don't like to use power to put the plugs in but Hey, each there own. Any idea what the plug gag is on a 5.3 Vortex???💯🙏
Thanks Josh, You made that look pretty simple. Those insulators on the plug wire are nasty. These new millenium vehicles are completely different from the old school chevy's when 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 was pretty much all you needed to know, between 200,000 and 300,000 miles is way better now days and greater gas mileage, but definitely a little more entailed to work on. Thanks again, Im working on a 2008 GMC Sierra 4.8 , currently experiecing the death wobble, very intermittant, can go for a week or 2, then ang on, any ideas ?
Holy crap, you saved me with cylinder 8.
Good video
Thanks for the view!
Will this be the same procedure for a 2007 Silverado 4.8??
Really helpful video, I'm working on 2000 tahoe, anything mechanical I want 2do on my own. Thanks
Keep wrench'n. You got this!
I just wanna know when changing the wires does it matter which ones you use 1st-8th or can you just grab any 1 of the new wires for each plug?
On an inline engine: the number one cylinder is located at the front of the engine, closest to the timing cover. On a V type engine: one cylinderhead is slightly forward of the other, toward the front of the engine. Cylinder number one is the forward most cylinder in that bank
My new spark plugs are smoking a bit. Is that bc I put too much of grease on the cables? Why the smoke?
I watched this & did this to my. 2013 Chevy 5.3 . When I got to the last one my check engin light came on , obd 2 reader says po300 multi misfire what’s up with this?
Josh can you do a video on changing out a crankshaft censor on a 2010 chevy silverado 4x4 z71
I'll definitely consider it if something comes into the shop that needs it.
Great stuff no horse shit straight forward I like that! Thank you!
No matter how many times I change my spark plugs which is about 4 times since this videos done been made. I Always end up using this video as a reference. Side note I have a 2018 silverADOE but ever since 2019 are there any vehicles that are made without that bs automatic on off switch? Specifically chevy’s? Whenever you come to a stop light or what not and the vehicle decides to shut off while the ac just blows hot air around that feels amazing when it’s July and you live in southeast Ga and it’s only 100° with 90% humidity. And I’m by no means an expert mechanic but the newer vehicles get more unnecessarily complicated to work on yourself while simultaneously falling apart quicker than some random joker who married a stripper bc she said I love you after homie tipped her a $100 for 30 seconds of fun.
What size are the wires 10” or 12”
Awesome vid! Very informative. But I ran into an issue... I have a 2009 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L...Basically the same exact truck as the video...I followed this video to the "T"...Ive changed plugs many times in the past on all sorts of vehicles, so I have a pretty good understanding. So The replacement was pretty simple. Pain in the butt as to be expected. Haha..I used NGK iridium plugs and Accell wires. Used dielectric grease and Anti seize. Once I was done and I fired up vehicle thats where my dreams were crushed. Lol...It is very rough idle and also is flashing CHECK ENGINE every so often. Im very confused. I tried my best to do a professional job. But truck runs worse than before. Any thoughts on why this happened?
A flashing check engine is a misfire. If you dindt have misfires before the spark plug and wire change, then it can only be one of those causing it. From experience, i can tell you that you should use the same sparkplugs that the factory uses, in this case is AC Delco, they are probaly even cheaper than the NGKs. Same for wires, use AC Delco on GM vehicles.
Is it ok to put 2015 car wires in 2008 Taho 5.3
What is a general cost for this service? I need some estimates and don't want to be taken advantage of. I own a 07 Tahoe. Thanks
You didnt mention to check the ohmage of the plug wires. What should we look for?
Interesting how none of these videos show the removal OR installation of Cylinder #8 next to the firewall and below the AC Accumulator. LOL
When replacing the spark plug wires are they all the same size for each side like if u had other ones which some are longer then other lmk thanks
On this engine they are all the same. However, many engines have them in all different sizes. Just depends on your engine
I would use the wires designed for your engine but if they're a little longer or shorter you'll be fine. Aftermarket wires are often not exactly the same size as the stock ones.
👍👍
What siz wires did you buy for your avalanche i bought ac Delco 7mm and my engine is trembling with iridium plugs 0.04 gap.now i ordered 10.5 mm wires I'm scared to try them there huge but compatible there super wires jbtools
Please show how you removed and installed the most difficult plug near the oil dip stick!!!
Should always do the Hard side first so it makes you know the job is getting easier the the hard beginning...
Is there a wire order ?
When I add the new spark plugs it doesn’t matter which order I put them in because they’re new right? And if I bought new plug wires does it come with a new metal sleeve for the bottom boot? Or do I reuse the old ones
Also I don’t have a torque wrench do I absolutely need one to do this?
The order does not matter take them out and put them in . Reuse the old sleeves new Wires do not come with them. Torque is not critical just don't over torque them find a happy medium
@@JPAutoFleet Thank you very much. Astonishing viewer feedback. What an outstanding video. Extremely informative, and I am very pleased with how clear and concise your instructions were. 10/10 video you need a lot more recognition. Just gained a subscriber!
do the plug wires have to be in a specific order? my truck is misfiring now after a new plug and plug wire change
Absolutely. Depending on the make and model it can be easy to mix up the order. Howerver, these Chevrolet engines are very hard to mix up the order
@@JPAutoFleet thanks, found out one of the plugs was cracked and fixed the issue!
👍
Do I disconnect the battery to do that
No.
I recently changed my sparkplugs after installing the car shook more than usual and kept giving me a blinking engine light and it gave a P0380 code could it be i installed the spark plugs incorreclty
Did you ever solve it ?
The ol cordless air ratchet

I ordered mine from Home Depot!
Chordless air ratchet. Lmfao
Cordless ratchet. You know what I meant. Thanks for noticing the details. And thank you for the view!
You can use a 16 mm socket
Great Vid, about to do mine myself... mechanic said $500 ... Lol no thanks DIY time
Update
Great video! Beware of COUNTERFEIT plugs! I highly recommend you Don't order from Ebay!! I did and got counterfeits, thankfully I got a refund immediately! All my auto parts places don't keep them in stock but Home Depot was cheapest online with free ship to store!
AutoZone
1999 is when the 5.3 came out
You know your GM's. Thanks for clarifying
This guy is using iridium plugs 41-162 that are recommended oem yet his link are for double platinum 41-962
where is the video about a stripped out spark plug
That back one on the passenger side 😢
Metal insulator sleeves went straight in the garbage can
You left out the other side (hard part to install man)
Driver side is easy
What about the passenger side
So sad you didn't spend much time showing us the REAL truth about that rear right plug....
"cordless air ratchet" 🤣
I just pay the dealer😢
DO NOT DO ANYTHING THIS GUY SAYS. 1. DO NOT TURN/TWIST ANY WIRE. You will break it inside. 2. GRAB IT FIRM WITH HAND AND PULL, NOT THIS BS this guy does. He is looking for views.
