    I noticed that the engine stayed a consistent 1600 RPM as well. That's really good and essential for maintaining good gas mileage. Keeping a consistent speed is difficult during traffic situations. People are merging on and exiting off the freeway, and sometimes moving into the other lane isn't possible. So that can interfere with efficiency. Thanks for sharing, Chad! Well done!! 👍

      There are definitely days on my commute when there is a lot more traffic. For some reason - this day was pretty light. The worst is when there is our typical summer PA road construction. Not only does it decrease my fuel efficiency - but it adds to my commute time. That’s never fun. Thanks for watching!

    great video, I own an F250 with 3.55 gears. I have a bed cover on the truck and keep tires aired up to about 70PSI as I pull a trailer regularly. My experience is much like yours or even a tad better. At 70 i can consistently get 18 or a bit above. I commute 6 miles to work and 6 miles back each day through my small town here in west Texas. I seldom go elsewhere during the week. I average about 14.6 on my weekly intown drive. Coming out of an F150 with the 5.0 coyote engine, I did loose a bit of mileage but nothing like the horror stories that were told to me. I also took the truck and my 30ft Coachman 259rks travel trailer (7000lbs empty) on a 4000 mile trip, 19 day trip through Mount Rushmore, to Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Jackson and back through Denver and home. I never had a problem with any mountain pass or road and had a trip average of 10.2. I am pleased

      With no headwind (Montana is hilly and windy), I do petty much the same with my F-250 as well ...with same set up. This is similar to my previous Toyota Tundra (5.7 litre)... However for towing and/or carrying my Pickup camper this truck loafs along and is far more suited to the task. I had tonneau covers on both trucks when not hauling the truck camper.

    That is awesome. I have an '09 F150 with a 5.4 which used to get around 18 on the highway but dropped to 15.5 after getting a slightly bigger tires and a 2-inch lift.

      I've heard that a lift kit and up-sized tires can really eat into the MPG. How much difference did it make with your 5.4?

    I still drive my 03 f150 4.6. I have half the size, half the power, 1/4 towing ability, and almost exact same mpg. They have come a long way.

      They certainly have. But - with the additional complexity of engines and transmissions, have come additional cost and potential for issues.

    Really good mileage empty for a heavy truck with a big gas motor. Not surprising with the small trailer due to the gate acting as a parachute even though it isn’t solid it’s definitely adding drag, been there done that. Thanks for the video

      The mpg is surprising with that trailer, if I take the tailgate off my 6x10 trailer mpg improves by 2 mpg.

    it's the mesh gate ;) if you collapse it, you won't have as far as a decrease. the mesh ramps all do this. something with aerodynamics.

    I drive 80 and 79 several times per week and the trip from Cranberry to Z town is my favorite. Meredith battery and DQ for a cone are my frequent stops.

    Looked like you entered I80 at Exit 29 (Barkeyville). Love the area. I have an F150 6.5 ft bed with the 5.0 Coyote. Completely empty, full tank of gas I was able to cruise at 70 and got 24 MPG btwn Nazareth and Harrisville. Locally, around Grove City I get 18.5 - 19.

    The gas mileage videos I've seen of the 7.3 have consistently shown the computer mileage as being about 1 mpg optimistic...

      Depends. Program is probably trying to average on a curve. Another youtuber, Bearded Auto Media, did the pencil math and found he actually averaged better one trip than the computer mileage was reporting.

      I did the trip reset at the pump and hand-calculated my results over about 10 tanks of gas - sometimes empty, sometimes towing, sometimes highway, sometimes rural drives. I found that on average, they were 0.2 mpg different between the computer and my math.

      We do sometimes miss the slightly better MPG that we got with our 6.0 Powerstroke diesel. But we don't miss at all the continuous problems and higher maintenance costs - along with higher cost-per-gallon at the pumps.     I get like 12 to 14 highway in my 2019 gm gas 2500. It sucks. This is a considerable improvement plus more power.

    I have been told that a truck bed cover helps with fuel mileage. Would be interesting to see if there is a difference in fuel economy with the cover off. It would also be interesting to test it at 65 to see if there is a difference. I have a 2003 F-250 Diesel and I found that once I get over 65 my mileage drops like a rock. Looked like you were running at about 1700 RPMs, which is nice.

      That's a good point about the tonneau cover. Years ago, with my first F250, I did notice about a MPG difference between the open bed and the covered bed. And that 1 MPG difference was significant, because that 5.4 gas engine averaged around 10-12 MPG. :)
      I have done the comparison at 65, and it does make a difference. Even 68 makes a difference. For this video though, I wanted to show at speed limit -what I would be getting. On days when I'm not in a hurry to get to work, I'll set the cruise at 67 or 68 just to squeak out that extra mileage. I also accelerate slowly and plan my slowing down at lights to try not to ever come to a complete stop. I think the kids today call that "hypermiling". :)

    Nice truck, and wow, that is amazing gas mileage. My 3500 dually empty with 410 is doing about 14.8 in the city. I remember when t was a kid 16yrs old my ford Ltd was getting about 9 or 10 mpg. My how things have changed

    I have a 2023 f350 lariat with 7.3 and 373 gears . I get in the 12 range around home/ town but on interstate with cruise set around 67 I get 17mpg area & that was with 5 adults in the truck with a couple hundred pounds of equipment in the bed . Of course that will drop some if theirs a lot of traffic & stop & go driving .

    Also there is a significant elevation drop going from rt 80 down to Pgh so you will get better mpg going south and lose mpg on the trip back up north

      I wasn't sure about the elevation difference - so I looked it up on Google. The difference between Barkeyville and Cranberry Twp is about 300 feet above sea level. Interesting. Thanks for watching!

    Awesome video & info ! Traveled 79 /80 many times from Pittburgh to Kane , PA for hunting . Thinking about getting the 2023 F350 Godzilla also but concerned about previous issues with Fords 10 speed transmissions in the past ? ? Thx again !👍⚾️

      I have an 03 F150, 2wd crew cab Harley Edition with the 5.4L supercharged and the most I've ever gotten was 16, but usually it's a little less. The 03 F150 probably weighs a good ton less, is smaller, lower and has smaller tires so for this huge beast to hit 17+ is pretty impressive. The 7.3 Godzilla actually has more horsepower and torque than the 5.4 supercharged as well. Actually looking into doing a swap since my 5.4 is getting a lot of miles on it and is getting tired.

    That’s about the best mpg conditions. 70 mph in warm temps. Resetting the trip meter while already going 70 mph isn’t very realistic. You need to reset your trip meter before you start your truck before you leave also, that would be your true commute mpg. A motor warming up takes way more fuel. The Ford lie o meter is always optimistic by about 15%. For a real world mpg you need to reset the trip meter after you fill your tank while still sitting at the pump. Then when your tank is almost empty do the hand calculated mpg for the tank at the pump after you fill.

      Thanks for watching. I reset the trip on the way to work when we were sitting still in that parking lot (before the interstate). But you're right - the truck was already warmed up. I had driven about 45 minutes to get to this location. As far as the computer calculated MPG, I've done the reset at the pump exercise and then track the gallons used and done the math through about 10 tanks of gas. My calculations always showed around 0.2 MPG difference. So I stopped doing it by hand.

    I normally get 13 around town empty. Best I ever got was 20 on the highway with no traffic, and a bit of a tailwind. Normally I get about 15.5 - 17 highway only driving.

      In other words a truck that costs 3-4 times as much as its 2008 7.3l v8 back to back turbo deisel counterpart gets 3 mpg less per gallon on average. Or in 15 years Ford managed to release even worse trucks during the suposedly greatest recovery in American history lmfao😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 man modern day manufacturers are such evil greedy demons.

    Just as a comparison. I rarely drive my '21 F350 -7.3l - 3.73 rear ; but at 65 mph I got 17.3 mpg's recently & 17 on another (12k miles on the clock). I ave ~10.3mpg's towing a 8400# tt. usually at 62-64mph over ~10k miles. This includes the hills & mtns here in the PNW. I'n not sure if its the computer or ??? but several times on the same route (with tt) I have achieved as little as 8.5 and one time 13.5 mpg. I have no reason why, it was not weather or wind related; but were only 65 mile trips. . Maybe the quality of reg gas ? Makes me wonder if its the mapping in the computer ? I use Tow/Haul mode and find I do get better mpg's if I manually downshift going up large hills or mtns though. I keep the rpm's a lot more constant that way. I was surprised that the light trailer mad such a difference though..

      Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s definitely curious that you get different MPG on the same route different days! I can see slight variation due to wind speed - but that’s a pretty big swing between 8.5 MPG and 13.5 MPG!

      @@PurpleCollarLife while going thru the Siskiyou’s (CA) I noticed while in Tow Haul, and cruise control it would hold the gear it was in and just keep applying more throttle. It would then downshift 2 gears at once, creating a pretty good jolt. So I went back to my college days of driving a 10spd semi and just down shifted manually as the rpm’s starting dropping to keep them at 2500 or higher when going uphill. Not sure if it makes a mpg diff, but I feel it’s easier on all the running gear (?).

    The longer I have my truck the better it is. I only have 14k on mine and it has the 4.30 gear ratio. I get about 15 at 70.

      I consider that great with the 4:30 ratio! Even though I'm starting to question the 10 speed reliability - I do consider it "the great equalizer". I think the 10 speed transmission does a good job of adapting driving for any of the available gear ratios. Definitely an old 4 speed with the 4:30 wouldn't be able to achieve a fuel economy close to the 4 speed with a 3:55 or 3:75.

    That’s phenomenal mileage for a real truck with real engine.
    I get about 16-18 with a 92 Ford F 150 4x4 in-line 6 5-speed
    However, sometimes for whatever reason it gets 20 mpg
    Odd , but true
    Anything over 13 with a 4x4 v8 is good
    That variable speed oil pump & head gaskets space on 7.3 is scary - my 300 in-line has 300,000 runs flawlessly
    But doesn’t tow 15,000 either

    I've watched a few of your videos on your 7.3L Godzilla F350. I'm trying to decide on a F350 Lariat/King Ranch with either the 6.7L Powerstroke or the Gasser 7.3L Godzilla. I have heard many stories about the cam/lifter issues with the 7.3L. I seem to remember that you had an oil analysis that wasn't too good. What has your experience been to-date with any cam or lifter issues. I am looking at either a 2021 or 2022 one ... won't buy the newer 2023-24, as I don't care the latest styling. Would be interested in learning more about your true experience and how many miles you have on the 7.3L as of now.

      So far, no issues with the cam/lifters personally. We did have high metals content in one of our oil analysis. In the most recent one, the numbers are more along the normal lines. I don’t think the cam/lifter issue is as prevalent as the internet would have us think. I’ve had a few comments from people who actually had an issue, out of thousands of views/comments.

    Pretty nuts.
    I do land maintenance, consistently pull different trailers and equipment. I own a 2005 f550 with the 6.0 and 4.88 gears, just passed 425k miles. Work between 5000 and 8000' elevation. The cgvw is between 22000 and 27000 lbs. Fuel milage varies between 9 and 12 mpg traveling at 60 to 65 mph.
    Why would I want to spend that kind of money on any of the new "trucks", regardless of the brand, they all have serious issues.

    I have a 2022 F250 4wd short bed XLT Crewcab 3:55 gears tow a 13800lb toyhauler get 9.8 mpg
    When I towed my sons aluminum goose neck horse trailer to Co when truck was brand new 6 horses 8.5-9.2 on my way back to AZ just truck on Leaf mode from Denver to phx average was 21.8 I have pics & video but can't post them

    My 23 F-350 SRW HO is pulling those MPGs in normal mode and mixed driving conditions. HWY I get ~21MPG@70MPH and 19.5MPG@80MPH (eco mode)

      @@PurpleCollarLife pump diesel with 2oz of hotshot everyday fuel treatment per tank. Eco mode makes a difference on the powerstroke as it reduces boost and thus fuel consumption.

    Everyone gets all concerned about fuel mileage with 250 and up class trucks. They are big, heavy, and with aero like a brick. I say anything over 15 with gas or diesel is pretty damn good. If it’s just used for pleasure who cares. You knew what you were getting into. If it’s for business, it counts more but you budget for it.

      Great question - not at all. I have had trucks (and Broncos) before that needed the higher octane for heavy towing. The 7.3 Godzilla seems to do fine on the 87 octane (or the Unleaded 88).

    Have you checked your mileage manually or are you just going by the trucks computer? I found mine to tell me I was getting better mileage than I actually was getting. There is a procedure to go in and adjust the calculation BIAS. I performed that procedure and my computer is almost dead on now. However, I travel 70-75 regularly when I am driving empty and my mileage is only 13-15 on average at the best. In order for me to get in the 17 - 18 range, I need to drive at speeds around 55-60.

      When we first got the truck, I calculated by hand for my commute trips and over the first couple thousand miles. The computer always averaged around 0.2 MPG worse than my hand calculations. Considering how gas pumps operate at the stations, I considered that differential negligible.
      Granted - that was about 10,000 miles ago - so it’s possible that it could be slightly different by now.
      I agree that there is a significant difference traveling at speeds below 60. In fact, I’ve found that even going 67-68 instead of 70 shows a noticeable increase in MPG over a long trip. But often I’m not that patient. :) Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

      70-80 mph is about normal going with the traffic in Texas. Anything slower than that on open road, will create the traffic roadblock. 13-15 mph is good on 70-75

    I use the gallons per calculator to see what the real mpgs are. My dodge cummins said 21.3 but in reality I was getting 19.4

    Great review! -- QUESTION -- For those of us traveling at 60 mph (my area has that speed limit) could you give me a guess as to what the MPG would be? I have often heard that it jumps up a lot going from 60 to 70 but not too sure.. Could you hit 20 mpg if you gently drove 60?

      Good question! I can tell you that in previous vehicles I've had with 5 and 6-speed transmissions - there is an extreme difference between 55 mph and 70 mph fuel economy. With the 10-speed in this truck, the difference is still evident, but not as much. I don't know if it would be possible to hit 20 MPG if you maintained 60 mph gently across flat land.     For most truck owners that are not pulling trailers, but are just wanting to drive a truck. A gass gas truck is the only logical choice. If you have never driven a diesel, you just don't understand what I am saying.

      I'm not sure what it does technically with the engine RPMs and transmission. But it does seem like it changes the shift point to shift before the RPMs get as high. And I do notice a difference in feel, acceleration, and sound of the engine when in ECO mode.

      ​@@PurpleCollarLifeeco mode just alters the shift points and reduces the throttle plate angle. Slippery mode adds a delay and reduces the angle so more. This video is helping me decide to make the jump to a 7.3. I had a diesel that I swapped for a 3.5EB but just upgraded the Fifth wheel and should have a more stout rear axle(HDPP is a bit soft). Great video

    I have a '21 F250 with the 7.3, 4x4, 4 door, 6.5' bed. Ford flat out lies btw, what you see on the gauge is false. Take your mileage and divide by the gallons it takes to refill. You will see that ford's gauge over estimates fuel economy by 1-3 mpg. I average 12.8 mpg combined calculated. Freeway is 15.1 mpg. If it is flat terrain. If there is no head wind. These are unladen vehicle figures btw. I have hit 17, 18, even 19 mpg on the gauge. Stopped and got gas and low and behold, 15.1-15.8 mpg. I submitted a complaint and got a computer update the next day. Got 8 mpg that tank. Got another update and it went back to normal....

      Thanks for the comment. I've done the hand calculations a few times and the computer in my truck is typically within a reliable amount. In fact, I've never found it to be more than 1/2 MPG off compared to the hand calculations.

      I was curious after your comment, so I looked up the elevations on my drive. From my starting point to my ending point is a decrease in elevation of 400 feet across the 1.5 hour drive. And obviously - on the return trip, I'm climbing up that 400 feet of difference.

    No MPG test is valid unless one runs at least 2500-3000 miles. Too easy to “pick” the route, conditions, etc. on short runs to make it look good.

      Hello, that's an interesting comment. The video is my daily commute (about 165 miles) and therefore is a real-world MPG test for me. We also did a MPG fuel economy test in a 12-hour straight drive using Unleaded 88 gasoline. czcams.com/video/SvPcL6s2yNk/video.html
      But as far as a 2500-3000 mile MPG test like you suggest - that would require a route across the country. For example - from New York City to Las Angeles is a 41 hour, 2791 mile drive.
      So I won't be doing that test.

      @@PurpleCollarLife How about just fill your tank, zero your odometer. Then drive for one month, keeping all fuel reciepts. End of the month, fill tank again. Divide miles driven by gallons used. That will be your true mileage.

    What I find hilarious is you’re averaging about the same as I get with my near 25 year old 99 F350 7.3 power stroke with a three speed and you have a 10 speed in the new trucks and aluminum instead of Steel so much lighter and their mileage is almost worse than a 25 year old diesel with a third of the gears lol😂 i took trip from Washington state to indiana and most of the speed limits were 75 or 80 and my trip of almost 3000 miles I was averaging 17.4 miles per gallon with a almost 25 year old truck.

      HDs from about 2020 on dwarf your 99 Powerstroke in overall size. Also, your 99 Powerstroke is way lighter. Not even close. Your Powerstroke has half the HP, half the payload and about 40% less tow rating.

      @@Billybob50119 If you mean fuel filters and oil every 15,000 miles thats it I haven’t thrown any parts at it in 160,000 miles other than routine maintenance I don’t know what you’re talking about or what 7.3‘s you’ve owned that some teenager drove it like they stole it that it needed parts thrown at it every year everyone that knows facts and not opinion knows that the 5.9 Cummins and the 7.3 power stroke are the most reliable diesels ever made and the only parts I’ve ever seen anyone have to throw at 7.3 is the occasional cam sensor going out otherwise people have half 1,000,000 miles on them and still driving them😂

      In my experience with the 351 engine and different axle ratios in previous 1/2 ton trucks and Broncos, 70 MPH often didn't get me much better than 12 MPG. Maybe the 460 does better than the 351 Windsor engines did.

    In other words, the results are not going to be anywhere close to typical.. Most people are not going to be cruising at 70 on an empty highway with no traffic. They're going to be in stop and go traffic and stuck at a million red lights.

      I'd say these results are highly typical for someone like me, who lives in a rural area. Obviously, if you live in somewhere like southern California, or in a city - you're going to have lots of stop and go traffic. But that's not the case in rural areas of our country - where we can drive a long time with out ever having stop lights, and never run into stop and go traffic.

      Yeah, but I loved my cummins, but with the emissions now, the gas is alot easier to talk yourself into. Unless you are towing often, its a harder sell. Between the emissions, the premium cost of the diesel and cost difference of diesel, I am not sure who is talking who into feeling better now.

      I do have a Ford Ranger that is my normal daily driver in good weather (2WD, 4 cyl, 5 speed). czcams.com/video/GB-ciByMd-I/video.html
      But I learned from my previous F350 (with the 6.0 diesel) that these trucks have to be driven once-in-a while and not sit for weeks at a time. So I do drive the F350 to work once every few weeks, or anytime I need 4x4 in our lake effect snow storms (which have been few so far in 2023/2024!). Thanks for watching. Great question.
