Notes by Jean Ritchie on Mudcat.org (2004):
"This was the version we sang at home in KY. I got other verses from Jeannie Robertson when we met in 1952, and she said the first two verses "like a poetry," and I told her to try singing them, as they were actually the first two verses of her "Four Maries." She couldn't believe it at first, tried it, then finally it fit. She was so happy!"

My family lived just a few miles from the Ritchies in Hazard, Perry County Kentucky. My older sister went to grade school with Jean. This type of music was heard all through those hills, and there were a lot of great musicians that no one ever heard of. In the mid 1930s Alan Lomax came into Hazard in Perry County to find some of these musicians and record their music. I have copies of these recordings, now housed in the Library of Congress, as many of my family members are on these recordings. My Uncle Justus Begley, Sheriff at that time, was one of the best banjo pickers in the state and he had a very unique style. His whole family was recorded, which was a major feat to accomplish as the family lived in a Holler deep in the back country. Lomax had to hire locals to get his equipment, by mule, to their cabin. On the recording, as they are singing and picking, the milk cow can be heard in the background. Priceless!

A lovely singer who gave so much wonderful traditional music to the folk/pop singers of the '60's who passed it down to us. I'm happy to have gone straight to folks like Jean.
