    This is one of the first designs that i've seen for a DIY bow press that works as well as the expensive ones. It's made from heavy duty materials, not wires and limb clamps. What was even better, i already had all the materials to build it, so it was free to me.
    This is much better and more solid then using ratchet-straps (which is not safe) and the screw and wire bow press (which doesn't allow for easy access).
    So give this homemade bow press a try if you are like me and only need to do some minor adjustments to your bow string, D-loop, peep sight, add a twist.... a couple times per year.

    Love this design, love how the video was done. So short and simple, no wasted time, offering the important design and construction but not making it long and complicated with details, allowing the viewer to figure those details out on their own. Made one yesterday and it works great. Thank you

    Great idea. Thanks for the instruction. I just made one using scrap pieces of cedar 4x4 (from a mailbox post). This eliminated the gluing of multiple plywood pieces. I used it to change the strings and cables on my crossbow. I removed the limbs/riser from the bow and this new press worked perfectly. Really like the fact that I don't have to buy another piece of equipment that gets used 1x per year.

    Great Idea! Plus if you want a lil more stability,you can make the middle piece of plywood wood block T shape. This would provide a lil bit more of a stable base when it sits on the table.

    The cable style presses you mention in the beggining work just fine. Like Bowmaster. And they are portable. Your DIY design is good as well for home use. The critical point is laminating that thick plywood for clamps, otherwise it would be dangerous.

    Definitely onto something I was thinking about making a bar clamp bow press and sure shit your video pops up. Instead of using wood blocks I may use a welder make a taller clamp that allows the string to face up for restringing a bow at home or possibly using laminated two by sixes about 16” in length Rad video man!!

    I made this and it works great. Instead of plywood though, I cut the wood blocks from a hickory log and oversized them for extra strength. Important note: use a 1 1/8" drill bit to drill holes to accommodate the 3/4" pipe.

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  Před rokem

      I don't know.
      I was always very cautious when it was pressed in there.
      But it should probably work with a crossbow.
      You can see a couple examples at 1:42 where they used steel instead of wood. That would be stronger, but harder to build.

  • @B-Rivendell
    @B-Rivendell Před rokem

    I love your design and I'm using it as a base to make my own. I ran into a snag though and I'd like your advice. What size drill bit did you use? I missed it when you said the hole size, and assumed 3/4 inch pipe meant the outer diameter when its the inner. I measured out the outer diameter at 1-1/16 inch, or 27mm. Did you use a one inch drill bit (spade or Forstner), then sand the inside of the holes? How much wiggle room is there from pipe to wood clamp?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  Před rokem +2

      I don't remember the hole size. But i do remember that it was just a tiny bit too small. And had to use a rasp/file to enlarge it a little. You want the pipe to be snug though. I used a forstner bit.

    • @B-Rivendell
      @B-Rivendell Před rokem

    пресс нужен только в случае сборки compound bow , у которого болты на карманах , не позволяют полностью ослабить тетиву и троса ! если лук собран , и требуется замена тросов и тетивы , или регулировки , достаточно иметь под рукой обычную зажигалку или любой предмет такого же размера ( дерево , пластмасса )
    - упираемся коленом в Riser , оттягиваем тетиву на 5 см , и вставляем предмет в блок , который упрётся в плечё при отпускании тетивы .

  • @austinmabry8462

    There absolutely IS a good way of releasing ratchet straps in a controlled manner. A few seconds of looking at how the mechanism should make this method abundantly clear to anybody with opposable thumbs.
    But yeah, it's not ideal.

    • @GertTown

  • @1959jimbob
    @1959jimbob Před 3 měsíci

    Good idea but the bow needs to be string up on this type of press and the cams have got to be totally clear so you can remove them and or replace the cables and string. The way you are demonstrating with the string down will be doable IF there is enough clearance for the serving jigs to be easily rotated around the string. Plus those cams must be totally clear so they can be removed.

  • @David0lyle

    Worried about one 2x4 how many pounds you pulling on your bow you could use 1/2” thick board if it’s all you have even with the notches take a bow scale pull your bow slowly and watch how many pounds it takes to get the string back far enough to work on you might be surprised on how little weight it takes all cams are different

    Might have a solution for you NOT to use the hammer retraction method. This is a very old and simple method for what you are trying to do. Get a short length of BRASS pipe 1" ID and this becomes the sleeve on your pipe spine. Glue it into your wood (clamp screw end). Note: BRASS has a natural lubricant characteristic with porosity and with a few drops of oil, will remain viable for many years. Do this for both press ends for a professional job. Approx. $15/ft of pipe
