How to make compound bow strings and cables

  • This video shows you how to make endless loop bow strings and cables.
    Preferred string materials = BCY-X, 62xs .021 diameter center serving, Halo .014 diameter end serving.
    24 strand string.
    After the production of this video, I began adding twist to the strings and cables before serving the ends, which I recommend doing. There are some other things I do differently as I gained more experience, and the following suggestions I received from a viewer "string twister" are helpful, so I will quote him below. I'll try to record a newer version of this video to show you some of the updates I've made. Anyway, here is the quote from String Twister "Twist your strings before you stretch them. 1 twist for every 1" 1/2. Take a piece of a dowel rod and make you 2 string splitters, (wax the wood before use) place them in the ends and the string between the colors. Black on top blue on bottom. It should twist from the middle out. When you twist on say the top end the dowels will cause it to twist from the middle out. Next tip after twisting and stretching, (take a scrap piece of string material and close the end loops, after the serving is started it can be removed.). Now start serving at the post and serve the same direction as you twisted (I go clockwise). Start at the end then do the center serving, STS, and then the other cam end. What you should be doing is serving from one post to the other. This should help your peep rotation and you will notice it doesn't try to unravel on you."

    This video is the one that got me into string making. After watching other videos it looked like such an intimidating process, but you laid it out in a manner so easy to understand that I dove right into it. I already made new strings and cables for my Motive 6 and now working on the Agenda 7. The Motive shoots great with my new strings. Thanks Sean.

    I've only just recently been looking at archery, and I want to applaud how well you constructed this tutorial; you describe every single step so clearly that there is literally no ability to misinterpret it, and you break every step down into its list of motivations and movements. Genuinely, this is the best tutorial I have ever watched; If I ever need a resource to see what I can do to improve my own talks, I'll be studying this.

My brother shows them off to his co workers and now they want me to make some for them.(dont know if I will, but it is nice when other's appreciate your work). Well, Sean... i couldn't find a scale that i was satisfied with, so what i did was rated a old valve spring from a race car engine on an electronic spring rater to get the poundage at certain compressed lengths, then put that on the stretching hook with washers. now i know that 1/2" compression = 104 lbs, and so on up to almost 300 lbs. Building the strings and cables as you showed in your video resulted in my bow shooting better than it has in 5 years. 2" groups at 40 yds with 2 bad 50 year old shoulders. haha. Thanks for the great videos, and the information. You saved me from the Crossbow trap, and I'm EXCITED to shoot my bow again. THANKS MAN!!!

    I also wanted to say thanks for posting actual honest reviews of equipment, I've noticed in the archery world they are rather far and view between. Most reviews are just paid product advertisements by the company's pro-staff.

    Hi Sean, this video is an oldie but goodie. That's great advice at 1:25 about possible string length errors on a limb sticker. I have the Sanlida Dragon X8. The Sanlida web site says the cables are 32.23" which is also what the cable actually measures. But the sticker says 33". I am guessing that the longer spec may have been for the older cam design. I just got new strings made up, and the cables were too long by about an inch. So measure twice, make once.

    • @seansoutdoors

    • @johndonato3638

      @@seansoutdoors I think the limb sticker was for when Sanlida used the older cam design, which took longer cables (33 1/4") due to that wrap-around design to the attach point on the cam. I figured that out after watching your old cam vs new cam video. And they likely did not print new limb stickers to reflect the change. The local folks who made my strings were using the measurements from the old cam design it seems. They offered to replace the cables / no charge. I'm still really enjoying the bow, and thanks for your informative reviews and performance testing. That information really helps!

    One concern I have, and maybe someone has pointed this out already and maybe it’s a non issue with bowstrings, is writing on the string material with a sharpie. In the overhead rigging course I took a few years ago, this was a Cardinal sin and slings with any writing directly on the fibres had to be destroyed because the ink has the potential to weaken the fibres and cause a sling to break under higher load. I also realize that safety standards in overhead rigging are incredibly high due to the nature of that business, but it’s just something I thought would be good to bring to light. I always enjoy your videos and come to your channel first if my bow needs something done that I want to do myself.
    Cheers

    • @seansoutdoors

      It is a non-issue. It usually wipes off the string by the time you are done serving it and I have been writing on bow strings for years and it hasn't done anything negative to the strength of them.

    Great video, My son having acquired a cross bow has heightened my interest is bows and the making of the bow strings, I am conversant knots and lines being a keen yachtsman. My son has broken a string and on inspection it appears to be made of a heavy fibre rather than the separate lays of strings as yours are, the servings are as you have shown, also the these strands are waxy and my son was told to use a wax to prevent damage to the string.This broken string is only months old but I don;t know what treatment it has endured. The break is at the center where the holding mechanism attaches. I thought the wax was to allow the fibres to slip against each other within the servings, but watching your video your servings hold the strings so tight they effectively become solid and bar like. Am I right in thinking so?

    I´m a novice Compound shooter from Germany (sorry for my bad English) and just planning to build my own strings and cables. I´m quite firm in making strings for my recurve bows but I haven´t build one under tension, yet. I own a string jig quite similar to yours and want to upgrade it with that type of stretching device you´ve shown.
    But I don´t understand how you get the twists into the string when it´s under tension. I would presume it´s just turning the hooks further in for the required amound of twists?
    Or do you simply take off the string, twist it and bring it back to tension on the stretcher?
    It would be so great to get a response!
    Blessings from Germany.

      The only real reason to keep the space before stretching and twisting is to put something to keep them separated later so that you can put a peep sight in. You want the exact number of strands on each side of the peep sight and that just makes it easier to make sure you do that.

    Are both cables of the yoke system the same lenght as the bow string itself ?Many thanks for the answer !

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  Před 6 lety

      No, the Bow string is usually longer than the cable because the bow string wraps all the way around the outside of the cam whereas the cable does not. The yokes are made at the same length but one will have more twist than the other because one will be on the same side that the cables run, so the yoke that goes to the opposite side of the bow will need to be a little longer to get there. Thus, the side of the yoke that is on the side the cables run will have more twist in it to be shorter....

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  Před 4 lety +1

      Typically to get the right length you need to check with the manufacturer of the bow to see how they base their measurements. Some will put them under 100 pounds of tension for the length and many will just measure them in a resting state without any tension on them. For the most part I just measure them by pulling them straight by hand and measure them. I’ll do this by hooking one end on a nail and put a screw driver through the other end and hold onto the screw driver to pull the string right and I’ll measure it at that length.

    I don't have a scale. But i did build your jig. If your are using BCY452x@24 strands, how many half turns of the coarse thread bolt for 100 lbs? 9? if the string doesn't stretch, or (isn't) supposed to, then the turns per pound isnt linear( or shouldn't be), its compounded. So, basically, at what poundage is stretch actually induced? im just starting this learning process, so i built a sample string at 26.5". and after serving loops, stretched it to 27", (9 half turns).
    After releasing tension it came back to 26.5". in this scenario, 27 half turns would = 300lbs. would the string continue to stretch to 28" ? And will the string relax back to close to 26.5"?
    What is the actual benefit of stretching a string past is useful bow poundage?
    THANKS FOR THE REPLY. jim

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  Před 6 lety

      Firstly, I changed my approach and I twist, then serve, then stretch. When stretching, I tighten the string to take the slack out and then start the counting. So, tighten the bolt till there is not slack or bounce in the string, then start the half turn count.
      If your string ended up at the string length you needed then great. If it ends up longer, you can just add a little twist to get it back to length. I've noticed that the longer the string is to begin with, the more it has the potential of needing some twist to get it to the needed length.
      Also, check with your manufacturer to see if the string lengths they provide are at 100 pounds. Some might and some might not be at 100 pounds.

    Hi Sean- first bow string worked great. Now ran into a problem on buss cable. I believe my cable must be after market as it is not one cable with a yoke. It is actually 2 cables one short 16.5 that makes the yoke and the second cable that is attached to 1st and then attaches to opposite cam. Would you recommend that I try to replicate this multi string buss cable or should I make a single string with yoke system. I am not sure what kind of string material the short yoke string is made from. It is very oily feeling, but doesn't show any signs of wear at the join point. Any suggestions appreciated. H

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  Před 7 lety

      You should wax your bow strings and cables regularly, so hopefully that "oily feeling" you detected is just bow string wax. As for the cable. I'm not exactly sure what you are explaining, but I "think" I know what you might be talking about. If you think there is an issue with it, then yes, replace it. Also, early on when they started making yoke system cables, they often would make a sliding system, which might be what you are explaining. however, they eventually figured out that you could control the split limbs better if you made the yoke the way I did in this video. Anyway, might be good to replace if you think there is a problem with it. God bless ya

    Hello Sean!
    Me again. Thank you for the video. I just have some questions. Hope you can answer me (us).
    Why do you serve the string before twisting it? is it better?
    How many twists do you recommend for the string? Clockwise / Counterclock wise?
    Lets say that I have to make a 60 inch string. How extra long the string must be in order to be 60 in at the end after stretching and twisting?
    Finally I bought a Mathews Chill compound bow and I am very happy with it. During this learning process, I have noticed that there are not separate things in archery tunning. The bow its very important, such as the arrows are. Maybe the less considered thing is the string.
    Somebody made a custom made string to me, and the bow performance decreased condiderably. That is why I returned to you at this point.
    I want to make my own strings just to make sure there is one less variable in the equation.
    GOD bless you Sean!

    • @seansoutdoors
      @seansoutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      When I made this video I was still a little new at making strings and it was easier to hit the correct length by serving first then adding twist. However, I stopped doing that because it gives a better result when you just serve the very end that will be the loop, then turn the jig and add all the twists, then stretch, then serve the rest of the end serving after you have stretched. I'm in the comments section right now responding to you, so I can't see what I wrote in the description, but I feel like put the formula for calculating string length and number of twists in the description so check there and see if it is there.
      Regarding the string and performance, very often a string and cables will stretch over time. In a sense, they stretch together as you use the bow. When you put a new string but keep the old cables, your string is susceptible to stretching more than the cables will be since the cables have already done most of their stretching. Additionally, if you put a new string on without adding twist to the cables to get them back to manufacturer's specifications, you are going to have other performance issues.

      Yes that is perfectly fine. Just out a string in it as you make it to separate the two sides so you know where to place your peep sight when it is finished.

    Sean excellent video... once question: when you measure your bow string do you measure it under 100lb tension after adding the twist?

    Great video Sean. Did you make the cable with 24 strand as well?

    Do you normally make your own string and cables or buy them? Is there a quality differnce in a good homade one with the brand of string that you recommended versus a brand name such as Vapor Trail or winners choice?

      Yes, I have been making my own strings for a couple years, just to save money, lol. I would say that I don't see much of any difference between when I make a good set and when I've purchased them in the past. I used to buy Vapor Trails all the time, but I also have come to like 60X custom strings for their price lol. God bless you.

    twist string same direction as serving so that it actually tightens serving to prevent separation issues
