Great video, enjoyed watching it. I have done many of these crack repairs. I use JB Weld. I prep the crack and surface exactly as you did, but I then lay a fine bead of JB Weld in the bottom of the groove, not enough to fill it, just a small bead. Then I hit it with a heat gun and it liquifies and wicks into the crack. Once that is done, I fill the crack, hit it with a heat gun to get the super slick surface, and let it cure before flipping it over and working the other side. That strengthens the BGE and lessens the risk of an unfortunate event when flipping. I bought my large BGE new in 1996, and use it on average once a week...... easily 52 times a year. Only in the last year has my gasket become sketchy. The gasket will shrink over time, I don't put any tension on the gasket when installing it. I just finished a medium that I bought for $60. Thanks for posting, I really am enjoying your BGE series.
Wow Wayne that is a great method and sounds really full proof. I don’t use the egg as much as you do as I have 3 other smoker/cookers that I use as well but if I see another crack, I will employ your method and do a video on it. Really great information, thank you very much. $60 for a medium? That’s a steal. It was a ton of fun redoing it for sure and I’d do it again if I ran across another deal like I did in this one. Thanks again for stopping by and commenting!!!
@@hunterhall5555 Just the regular two part stuff. Be completely ready to bond when you mix it, but if it gets a little hard to work with use a hair dryer or heat gun and heat it up just a little..... it will get very thin very fast. If my repair shows, I use a heat gun to heat it after application, it liquifies and leaves a very slick, smooth finish.
@@fro0tyl0opz Just the regular stuff, none of their specialty products. If it's a crack on the outside, you need to route a small V over the crack and then fill the V with the JB Weld. If bonding two pieces back together, just make sure you understand how they fit back together, JB Weld on both fracture surfaces, and then join them. I sometime use a heat gun or hair dryer to make the JB Weld thin (more liquid like) if the parts need to fit together really tight (like with a super clean break).
I've owned a large BGE for 8 years and still have the original casket on it. It is the best cooker, smoker, oven you can own. It takes a whole to learn how to get the best results from it, it is worth the effort. Great video and great job on the refurbished egg.
Thank you Sir, yeah, I was fortunate that I found this one, and bringing it back to life was a lot of fun. This one is 15 years old and I would imagine it will be around for quite a long time yet.. Thanks for watching, I appreciate your time!
Richard-great video. It's been a couple years. How's the repair holding? I have just done this (with a larger crack all the way up the front to top). If you had to do it again, would you advise using some fiberglass mesh? Thanks in advance!
Hey Hunter thanks for stopping by! Funny, you should ask, I just did a video about a month ago updating that crack. I also show how to make a really awesome iron skillet chicken pot pie. Anyway, to answer your question, the repair is holding up just fine, zero issues so I wouldn’t invest in a mesh for this, because the stuff that I used worked great and I show in the video there’s absolutely no additional cracking or chipping of the repair or anything. Obviously you can do what you want but the repair seems to be holding up just fine! Go check out that video! Thanks again Hunter for stopping by, I appreciate you and God Bless!!

Hey Richard, I was curious how the crack is holding after your repair? I am currently trying to get my base replaced but looking at repair options if I can’t get mine replaced. I have the exact same crack in my base.
Hey Scott thanks for stopping by. So I’ve not had a single issue with the crack since the repair. Believe it or not in September it will be a year since I did that repair and I’ve cooked countless cooks on the egg with no issue. I will add that I bought the ash catch can that fits in the bottom of the egg just for a little added piece of mind but I’ve not seen any issue. Good luck!!!
Joel, thanks for reaching out. The limited lifetime warranty is only good to the original purchaser of the egg. I did reach out through my BGE local supplier and was told the warranty was not transferable. Thanks for your comment!! God Bless and Happy New Year!!

If that does not hold, I would the surface and use fiberglass next time. That part of the Egg will NOT get very hot. What you are doing should work.
Thank you very much for the feedback!!
