Switzerland made easy work of Italy so Southgate should get credit for advancing.

All I credit Southgate with is bring through a generation of great talent from a really bad place that the national team was post Iceland but he’s should have had the respect for the nation and handed it over to someone with the bottle to make the brave decisions
Two things can be true at once. England has advanced to 3 semi finals in 4 tournaments due to unbelievably lucky placement on historically lopsided brackets while also having possibly the worst manager in football.

I've said this for a long time, not forgetting that Portugal even finished 3rd in their group (and 3rd out of all 3rd place teams), and Greece only got out of the group because Spain lost to Portugal in the last match, yet people expect teams to sail through tournaments which rarely happens

Gareth Southgate has been England manager for 4 knockout tournaments, he’s got us to 4 Q/F’s, 3 S/F’s, and 1 final so far. Just on that record alone he’s got to go down as one of the all time great England managers already.
Tell that to muppets in the press who only know how to write one story... sack him, replace him with another manager whom they'll crucify at the first opportunity. It often seems the only good news is bad news.

No matter what anyone says about Southgate we've always since I've been watching football had unbelievable individual talent that should win games but we've always been weak on mentality, even if we get knocked out the strength the team has had with coming back and penalties show he thinks just as much about the players state of mind as results. I honestly have belief we will play to the opposition the better they are the better we will play. Either way I love seeing an England team that looks together good or bad I see them as a team now rather than different club players.

Although he delays the substitutions and can be somewhat reactive, his man-management skills are superb. He created a comfortable environment for the players. I cannot imagine Lampard, Gerrard or Rooney being able to do that despite their trying to step into management.

Well done Gareth Southgate! Clearly has great man management skills plus has found a way to win at tournaments. Fingers crossed that this can go a stage further and we can actually win a tournament! I wonder if it would work to play Palmer on the left, drop Harry Kane from the starting line-up and play Jude Bellingham as a false nine. But very happy that we have an English manager and a really well managed England team.

@@KakashiH318 that’s a factor for sure. Also if we are being honest, we have been blessed with favourable draws. Hopefully this is the year we finally take advantage of it

It's not to say that all the previous managers were terrible, but just that ultimately it's still very difficult to win games in major tournaments even against significantly worse teams on paper.

Southgate is a magnificent manager. I love the boring football he plays. The failure to pass the ball, keep possession, use the ball to find players in spaces. No aggression in defending or attacking. Hes a top manager, completely changed football for the better

Tournament football, you need to use a deep squad, inexcusable not to use them, half of the team look jaded so why not use the fabulous bench and drop sleepy harry?...
You need stability. A foundation of players who will play without nerves and won't let the occasion get to them. So often in the past, we had situations where our lack of composure got the better of us, and the players ran about like headless chickens, hoofing the ball and chasing the game.
These days we are looking to pass the ball into the back of the net, I'm hoping after Saka's curling long-range effort that we see other ways to draw the opposition's defense and get that ball on target.
Its not hard to understand, in modern football its very taxing on offensive players who have to be discipline for 90 mins. Not all of the players on the bench can be discipline defensively for 90mins hence why they are on the bench. This is why he wont start Arnold and other players however if they come on for like 30 mins its not so bad to expect that from them. This reason why vini jr is the best front player in the world right now, he gives quality on both ends. Same as Jude u cant really take him off cus he works hard for the team on both ends. Real madrid has more ucls that then entire epl combined and they play to win like this. Alot of pundits played in eras of football that were defensive but not as physically demanding where u need to press for 90 mins non stop. So alot of them wont understand this.

He doesn't need this JOB. This goes beyond any simple idea of a JOB.
He has transformed our approach to the squad, and yes sure it still has a way to go, but at this level, you don't simply pick your best players. You analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition and then you select systems and players to exploit that. You analyze your own weaknesses and you try to mitigate that.
If he selected the team everyone believed should play, and played the formations everyone says he should play, there would be no surprise for the opposition. If every player played in their favorite position, there would be no surprise, nothing to guess at. As a manager, he also has to keep his opponents guessing, even when the press conspires to give away his tactics for another breaking story.
So yeah, the first rounds were necessarily boring just so that he would later have a plan B, and a plan C.
