I'm a Golden State Warriors fan. I've always wished they would play that before introducing the players. If I had my way, I would pay him to come to a game to do just that with the bottles and say it.
The Warriors is just one of those movies where the casting was all perfect. All the way from Sully to Cyrus. Even with the actors/actresses we have today, I’d hate the idea of a rework or anything. Even with Rembrandt and Snow, some of the deliveries on their lines in the movie are completely empty and soulless, but I still could not picture anyone other than Marcelino Sanchez and Brian Tyler playing those characters. And if I’m being honest, I don’t even want to see the Ajax character again unless it’s still a young James Remar
So happy he's such a nice guy. I always thought David Patrick Kelly might be a bit crazy. But he's obviously a well-read, cultured guy with a great memory. Cool.
He is indeed a talented actor. He'll be remembered just for the ad-libbed bottle scene alone. Sully's death scene in Commando is also surely remembered for it's grim humour. The Warriors was a good follow on from Assault on Precinct 13, both good classic 70's suspenseful action movies.
The soundtrack...the music of the warriors...that pulsing, rhythmic synth music was incredible, and gave real atmosphere to every scene. It would not be the same film without it!
I just saw him at Circle In The Square in Enemy of the People. Awesome. And he was very sweet and approachable with the audience who was waiting outside to meet cast members. He took his time. Love him. Old school brilliance.
Great interview and info (they tried a prosthetic arm!). David Patrick Kelly did such a great job in the movie. About his character, Luther...I first saw the movie early on when I was very young, and loved it immediately. But one thing I said to myself was "Why does that gang let that little guy be the leader, and let him push all them around?" And then one day it hit me. Because not only is he a nut, but he has a *reputation* where he'll kill you, and laugh, like he did to Cyrus, and probably others. He's earned his rep. It's like at the end, when Swan asks Luther why he shot Cyrus..."Because I like doing things like that." Simple as that. His rep says he's gonna be the leader.
That’s the thing with gang leaders…most of them aren’t that big. They have created the persona that they are bigger, meaner and crazier than anyone else. Most of them could be pushed over with one hand. Lol
David is really a brilliant actor. He should like king in Hollywood, his acting is just brilliant. Specially in the crow. I'm surprised he was never in a Quentin Tarantino movie. I know Tarantino likes him.
Fabulous interview, really great listening and watching this man , brilliant insight to The Warriors . First time I’ve ever seen an interview with David Patrick Kelly .
About 7 years ago in the afternoon, I saw David Patrick Kelly in NYC sitting in a subway seat right across from me. It took me a few minutes, but I begin to realize that was him! He was kind of intimidating to me which I found very intriguing. Lol. I didn't talk to him I just left alone. He was sitting next to and talking with a very pretty young lady perhaps his daughter. I don't know. She kind of resembled him. But it just brought back memories of this wonderful movie: The Warriors. He was one of my favorite characters in the film. Hearing him describe the movie, the behind-the-scenes feel and emotions, the motivation for the movie from various literatures and other art forms , makes me even more so impressed by him. What a talented actor he is!
I really appreciate David. He is a fine actor and he was excellent in the Warriors as well as many other films. I never saw him on stage but I'm sure he was very good. Thanks for this.
It's one of those movies you wish there could be a part 2. But the truth is, it would never work. This is one of those once in a lifetime movies that did way better than anyone expected and you just can't duplicate something that created a life of its own.
He's one of those actors that should, and probably will, earn a Lifetime Achievement Award. He's definitely got my vote. My favorites are The Crow and Dreamscape.
to describe that movie, like a very few others : PERFECTION ! the casting, acting, story, camera, editing, settings, decors, even the music and sound effects...just perfect.
2 most iconic roles of his that stuck with me: Luther from The Warriors, and Tommy Ray from Dreamscape. Him turning into the Snakeman in Dreamscape scared me to death as a kid. I recently watched 48 Hrs for the first time, and was surprised to see him in it. I also found it amusing that his character in it was named Luther as well, and wondered if it could have been the same character even. 48Hrs Luther had just been released from prison, where he was serving time with a character played by James Remar, who also played a character in Warriors who was last seen being arrested. Warriors ends with the assumption that Luther is beaten to death by the Riffs, but what if he was actually arrested as well, and then he was being released from prison in 48hrs several years after the events of The Warriors? 🤔 Anther small role I enjoyed him in was a late 90s film Trojan War where he played a homeless man. He was also great in K-Pax and The Crow. Definitely an underrated actor.
I did not even KNOW there was a book until right now. I never knew David's character's name was Luther in this movie. I was a little confused. I thought his name was Luther in 48 Hrs only. Luther in TWO movies? Wow. Years ago,my friend,my high school friend,Steve, from Santa Clara California, went to see the movie and said to me about "Luther" later: "I think he was talking to his mother", in that phone booth scene. Great movie. Like Enter the Dragon,The Lost Boys, and Little Big Man, "The Warriors" changed my life! Thank you Walter. For the movie. Thank you Barry, for the soundtrack. And thank you, guys for the acting that made this movie❤🙂
How interesting that at 3:36 he says he was basically homeless, and the role I first know him as is a homeless man named Double T on the 90s kids' show, Ghostwriter.
Warriors, come out to playyyyyy, Warriors come out playyyyyyy According to stories, David Kelly Ad-Libbed that very popular phrase ! He was a GREAT VILLAIN during the 70's and 80's
I loved him in the 80s movies commando and 48 hrs...he really made you dislike him great believable actor...he is so different than the characters he played. Lots of respect 😊
I think David is so COOL. I was floored when I realized I knew him from Warriors when I saw him in the OBC of Once. He is fabulously talented, and a genuinely kind person.❤
Pardon me but somehow there these some 'Sean Penn' vibes in Luther everytime i watched The Warriors.. But sir David Patrick Kelly really nailed it,this movie with Luther in it will forever be a Cult's Masterpiece!
The thing about David is he’s always been cast in crazy or villain roles. At least that’s all I’ve ever seen of him. Im curious to see him act in drama , he can probably do it well!
This guy should be way more famous than he is. He really is one of the best actors of his era. He affected me in many movies.
He played so many great bad guy roles he’s truly one of the best highly underrated
Absolutely! Anyone who beat out Meat Loaf in an audition *and* studied with Marcel Marceau deserves a lot of respect!
Yes he is!
That role is only reserved for the black man homie so you betta relax. He’s no Denzel or Morgan Freeman or Sidney.P!!!! WATCH YOUR MOUTH!!!!
In Dreamscape !
Between The Warriors, 48 Hrs, Commando, The Crow, Longest Yard, Last Man Standing… He always makes an impression
Thx to walter hill for using people he liked Like james remar.. and david 48 hours
My gosh, what a resume of movies that is, wow!
He's great in The Misfit Brigade aka Death on Tracks.
How can you not mention Dreamscape?
Was he in John wick with the cleaning crew? Just asking
“WARRIORRRRRRRRSSS, COME OUT TO PLAYYYYYYAAAYYYYYYYY!!!”
I'm a Golden State Warriors fan. I've always wished they would play that before introducing the players. If I had my way, I would pay him to come to a game to do just that with the bottles and say it.
He literally steals every scene he’s ever been in regardless of who he’s acting against. Legend.
True that.
Seeing "Luther" as an old man reminds me that I'm an old man. Time flies.
Same here lol
@@JaxNole61 Yep
But, he’s still got it.
This is an absolutely excellent interview. David Patrick Kelly was outstanding in the role.
This movie wouldn’t have been what it was without the great David Patrick Kelly. A phenomenal actor and musician.

I really enjoyed this interview. He is such a smart & versatile actor.
David Patrick Kelly is a great and under rated actor. Great interview on The Warriors.
Without him "The Warriors" wouldn't have succeeded like it did!
Can’t believe I never realized he’s the same actor that played T Bird from The Crow. Such a great actor
Ain’t no coming back….there ain’t no coming back!
He was awesome in the crow.
@@jasonmorgan1543 there’s no comin back!!!
FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP!
The mark of a great character actor is the ability to disappear within their role. David is a master.

Always been a fan of this excellent actor 👏🏻

What a legend his chilling portrayal of a deranged gangleader in warriors unforgettable. And he came up with the song (chant) in the car legendary 🙌.
Excellent interview. Loved him as Luther. He played a great character in Dreamscape, and also loved him in K-Pax... Very underated indeed!
Always Loved David Patrick Kelly's Acting, way under rated, good to see Him in John Wick
Great backstory. thanks. I saw this film when it came out. I was about 13 or 14 years old.
I really appreciate David. He is a fine actor and he was excellent in the Warriors as well as many other films. I never saw him on stage but I'm sure he was very good. Thanks for this.
70's NYC still looked gritty and old. This was before all the re-development.
My man David Patrick Kelly Always made a big time impact in all his movies very underrated actor warriors come out to play a cool dude 😎
A very well read man as his grasp of the English language and depiction of scenes entail.
He’s the personification of the saying “There are no small parts, only small actors.”
Funny thing David Patrick Kelly played Luther in warriors also a Luther in 48 hrs both Walter hill movies
Great actor. So many good roles. Totally perfect for the Luther character.
To have studied with Marcel Marceau had to be an unbelievable experience and then Studs Terkel, wow! 🤯
He doesn't show up for the comic cons but he's a really interesting guy who gets going once you get him talking. Great actor and great interview.
Thank you Mr. Kelly for all your contributions to the beautiful world of cinema.
I was amazed when I saw him in John Wick. Wish we had more of him!!
This man is in many of my all time favorite films. Warriors, The Crow, Commando, etc.

"I just like doing things like that!!" 😆😵💫🥴
I believe he was in dreamscape also. Scary movie!!
Love DPK. The other characters I love are the guy he played in 48hrs, the guy he played in the Crow and the guy in Dreamscape.
I'm still scared of that scene, Mr Kelly!
I'll always remember him from Commando "Ooo la laaaaaaaa"
to describe that movie, like a very few others : PERFECTION ! the casting, acting, story, camera, editing, settings, decors, even the music and sound effects...just perfect.
His long hair totally fit his character. Wild and unpredictable. Dangerous.
Don't sell yourself short sir you guys did a GREAT job.👍
Come Out To Play
Love this guy
Other than the DVD, he doesn't talk much about the Warriors...never seen him at any of the conventions etc. It's nice to hear his take on everything.

Not just the cinematography, direction and the actors. The soundtrack is one of the best. David Patrick Kelly was perfect for the part he played!
