Thank you for the video! I wanted to get all the 1/144 Gundam Wing models that I use to have as a kid and figured I love the idea of panel lines, this video is exactly what I wanted to know.
I've been using the fine tip Gundam marker, but after this video I'm definitely switching to the Tamiya liner. The way it basically filled the panels on its own was like watching sorcery lol.
Just pointing out that the GM301 200 model is black in color and they are really deep and thick. I would recommend the GM302 which is grey that blends really nice with the white armor piece for anyone wanting to try out the 200 model gundam markers.
I've been panel lining with felt tip pens for years on models. Gunpla marker makes felt tips in grey and black, I use the grey for white parts and the black on everything else. They really do work fine, I tried to use the Tamiya brushes but I had already become so accustomed to felt pens that it wasn't that big a difference. The brushes made a bigger mess that had to be cleaned up whereas the felts tips leave hardly any cleanup. In the end it really does come down to personal preference because both can be applied with the same quality and you're not gaining or losing hardly anything by choosing one over the other.
Hi, I'm from the future. Is it true that Tamiya causes the plastic to become brittle? I bought a gm13 mecha gray marker for panel lining but I'm worried that it might look bad compared to panel lines filled using Tamiya. However, I'm not sure if I should use the latter because I've read that using it without topcoating the plastic will make the plastic brittle
Hey there! From my personal experience, I'm not concerned with Tamiya panel liquid making the plastic brittle. I've built over 200 kits of all grades. Mathatically that's thousands of individual pieces or plastic parts. I've only experienced that brittleness issue once. In that instance I actually applied WAY TO MUCH liquid so that's on me not the liquid. Alternatively if you have not seen my video yet, I found the best panel lining tool. 0.03mm lead pencil. @@TheChanman001 Graphite panel lines? That's interesting, I'm going to have to look into that because graphite would be completely unbothered by enamels and topcoats. I have never experienced brittle plastic with Tamiya, but I haven't used it much either.
@@TheChanman001 thanks for clearing that up. It's actually interesting seeing the pencil being used as a panel liner. And thank yoh for this video. I actually learned a lot from this. I'm a little less afraid and a lot more knowledgeable in panel lining my kits after watching this vid.
Very thin point q-tips are good if you want to do multi-layer paint chipping: let say you have a paint layer that represents bare metal, then you seal it with the gloss clear, then paint layer that is "primer" (do not seal with gloss but paint should be either gloss or semi-gloss) and then another layer of actual body color. Dab a q-tip into something that can eat through paint (but not easily) and start rubbing off the paint: som times just damaging only one layer of paint and sometimes hitting the gloss coat of the "bare metal". You can even complicate things more if you put a "rust" (few tones of the rust colors in a random pattern) layer between clear coat that is protecting "metal" and "primer" so you would get even "rust" "eating" the model.

@@TheChanman001 i am going to pick up the thinner of the same brand. I heard you can use lighter fluid or deluted rubbing alcohol as a substitute though.
I guess as long as you know what kind of paint you're using you'll be fine. Some companies thinner may say Enamel but it's not pure and will wash off even lacquer.
@@TheChanman001 when i deside to paint it ill have to redo the liner but for the time being theyre just a straight build. Im duilding the build divers line and im working on the altra. Its the sixth ive finished and normally i have always used the blue marker (gx-01 i believe) but i saw that in a video and wanted to try it.
Very informative video. Thanks. I also just learned that Canadians pronounce the word decal differently from us in the States. We say “dee-cal” you say “deckull”. I’ve been to Canada several times but that was never a word that came up in conversation with anyone.
I watched this other clip that he used the thin marker for both some shading and line works using a tip and a erasor. But think I will try the Accent eventually.
if you use the thicker felt tip point instead of the "fine liner" it will do the same thing as that Tamiya liner is doing. and the felt tip is so small it can still be used for most lining jobs normally.
The tamiya panel line fluid actually is as dark as the gundam marker if you shake it correctly before usage. There is also a dark gray version of the tamiya fluid i would recommend for white panels. The only thing scarring me are the warning labels on the fluid comaired to the pens they are quite toxic.

Hi, in case you have not seen it, I have a newer video that demonstrates the Creos .5mm lead pencil for panel lines. You might like that option, I love it especially when I build my Penelope.
I have used the gundam marker 302 on a kit that i previously painted and topcoated with mr hobby premium matte topcoat, and when i wanted to remove the marker, it seems the topcoat somehow got removed with it because i managed to smear some of the paint underneath it. What can i use to properly remove the marker without affecting the topcoat? i used 90° alcohol because i only had that at the time.
I learnt fairly quickly that the panel line liquid can make the plastic brittle and even break. Would reccomend going a clear coat using mr hobby gloss or something similar before using.
This is actually a low percentage occurrence. I've used it on thousands of individual pieces and only once when I put way to much my accident that it happened. It was an easy fix. So if you think 1/2000 chance is too high coat everything. I don't coat before I use the liquid. In the end, do what you're most comfortable with. Gunpla is freedom!
I like both the gundam marker methods and tayima. I tried the liquid on 2 kits, however if too much is applied rip the plastic or if your tired and forget to clean up then rip the plastic too. Yeah...i learned thr hard way. Luckily for one only the sabers broke easy fix however for my red frame....the hand joint melted and a piece for the jets in the backpack melted due to me forgetting to clean it. I may stick to the gundam markers xP
How are your kits that you panel lined with the Tamiya panel line accent color? Wondering because it says on the warning that the plastic may become brittle? I haven't checked the kit that I painted with Tamiya panel liner. Kinda scared that it might crack LOL!
im using the gundam marker GM301 - TAMIYA PANEL LINE ACCENT COLOR is great...but its much better if you TOP COAT first...before you apply it...since it has thinner that makes plastic brittle and you will use X-20 thinner......(its in the bottle) but the GM301works fine..especially if youre only building it out of the box with out any heavy painting...its like the tamiya panel line..its also runny... just saying...
@@palor1204 It can, though its kind of more related to the wash, I think. As per a gloss any hobby clear gloss. Tamiya makes a good spray on clear, and there are paint on versions as well. You don't NEED to do it, but it will make things move more smoothly and also protect the plastic, as sometimes plastic has been known to crack when exposed to certain chemicals.
it also protects the plastic and paint from enamel as the solvents in the enamel panel liner can cause plastics to crumble and break. I would never ever put enamel washes on bare plastic.
@@gundamfan2020 I put Tamiya panel line washes on bare plastic all the time and only had one minor break in a pilot figure once when I accidently saturated the thing. In general if you're just panel lining or putting on reasonable amounts its fine. Its when you let it really sit in liquid form for long periods that it can cause issues.
Yeah this is a heavily discussed topic. I've had multiple replies. I've used on bare plastic on estimated 80% of my kits. That equals hundreds of parts, only once did I have a crack from it, and it was my own fault for applying TOO MUCH in one drop. So I'm a builder who is very comfortable using it on bare plastic. Bottom line I always tell people who ask, do what you're most comfortable with.
This is very informative and now I've ordered one panel accent color. One question, do you usually apply some clear top coat before panel lining your kits?
Yes I've started applying a Matte Spray on all my kits. It gives them a cool appearance, almost a grainy look, and a smoother feel. Would you like to see a video comparing an un-coated kit vs a matte sprayed kit? Thanks for the comment!
That would be really helpful since I'm planning to buy one myself. Also, can you do a comparison between an industrial top coat vs a one for model kits? I can't actually find any top coat for model kits here, and the most popular choice is the Bosny clear gloss/matte since there's also no Krylon available in my country
So is the tamiya paint bad for plastic? kind of scared now because i bought gundam markers to paint my 1/12 scale darth vader, and the last thing i want is for it to become brittle and break, hope i bought the right stuff.
I'm sorry what do you mean by panel wash? I use rubbing alcohol to wash off the panel lining liquid. As for the Tamiya Panel lining liquids I bought 1 off ebay, and the other from a local hobby store carried a lot of Tamiya stuff. I hope this answered your question, if not please let me know! :)
recently switched from gundam markers to the tamiya panel liner (X20 in the mail as my country / the neighboring one only sell X20-A which apparanetly does nothing >.>) quite a learning curve as to what works and what doesn't, picked of the kshatriya's binders and one of gundam wings sabers to try it out, amazing magic like for the saber, borderline useless for the binder :( kinda really need to source some good cotton swabs as the one's i have are pretty loose so i keep erasing lines >.> the gundam makers i just rubbed with a finger to thin them down a little though that also has many places were it doesn't really work
@@TheChanman001 found a good way to not use to much X20 is to shake the bottle take off the lid and rub the cottonswab on the lid, it'll make even the meaty somewhat soft cottonswabs useable (can't really find any hard/tight one's in the area and i've burned through atleast 150 on the MG unicorn full armor). though if you have to push to get a bit deeper it tends to easely go way to deep erasing your panel line though thats where the low amount of X20 tends to help as it takes a few swipes to erase it fully.
Good video! The comparison was great. I do have a question though: I'm using the liquid to do some looking on a painted model, I think because of the thinner it is naturally mixed with, it has corroded my paint job! Would using the marker solve this, or am I just doing something naturally wrong?? Thanks in advance.
I use Tamiya liquid panel line on my Tamiya painted kits, I have not had any problems with it washing/melting my paint or my kit. My thoughts are what type of paint are you using? Acrylic or Enamel? Is too much panel lining liquid being applied? What brand of panel liquid are you using? Next question you asked liquid or marker? My personal preference is still liquid it looks better. The thin marker looks like you drew the line with a marker. I hope this response helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Maybe I should do a 2018 video? 🤔
Chanman 001 I used Tamiya spray, I may have used too much like you suggested, first time I had tried panel lining. I just watched a ZakuAurillius video that went over order of painting operations, he ended up touching on 2 of the problems I experienced: 1) the liner didn't bleed well into the lines (thus my desire to use more). 2) using a clear top coat of a different paint base to help guard against mistakes & aid in the bleed/capulary. 🤔 What color liquid are you using? Did you shake it up? Was it think or thin consistency? As I give your question more thought, I can remember using a lot of liquid in the past to fill in larger areas of the model and there was no negative affect. Do you use Facebook? How much thinner are you using on the swab to clean it up? I was using a Gundam marker eraser on a test kit and i end up wiping away the entire panel line away! So I feel like I’m using too much. Thanks for this little tutorial btw

Nice video. Got to try the accent color. A while ago I spray a part with samurai spray paint and use gundam marker gm301 on the panel line. When I clean the excess using gundam marker eraser, the paint got damaged a bit. Any advice on that? Thanks.
Hmmmm.... Most likely the Samurai Spray Paint is Enamel based? That's why when you wash the gm301 with paint thinner the paint washes off as well. I have had that problem before. I only use the Gundam Markers on kits where I don't paint. If I am painting it with Tamiya paint I make sure to use the Accent Color because it doesn't make as big a mess when applying. Does this answer your question?
idk whether to use gray or black panel accent color... :/ I watched some of the video about this two panel accents, they said to use the gray one on the white parts and black for the colored parts. What's your opinion ?
My advice is always go with what "you" love most. I experimented with some grey on white, my personal opinion is that there isn't enough contrast to make the panel lines and the design pop out. Why don't you try both and see what you like better. Bottom line Gunpla is freedom of expression! Do what you like and what you think looks great! There are too many haters in the world to please, so don't try... Please yourself, but I'm sure you'll also have plenty of supporters out there too! Please make a video of your own to show off your work!!! Have fun!!!
Hi, they do the samething, but I do not know if chemically they are the same or not. That is a very old video, and I do not remember if I used Enamel thinner or Acrylic thinner. The clean off the excess liquid.
Hey dere! I heard that the Tamiya will melt/eat thru the model plastic and even acrylic paint due to the solvent in it, it even says on the official website that it will soften the plastic. People online saying you need to use an enamel base coat under it to protect it and assist the capillary action?!? I’m painting both gundams and warhammer minis. Was a gundam kit kid since the 90s but just got into 40k. Btw!!!; “DEH-kuhlz” lololol “Decals” is pronounced “DEE-Kalz” bro!!! 😉 🤜🏻🤛🏻

Hey! Great video, I learnt some things in it but I encounter an issue with my panel line accent color. I don't know when I can clean up my panel line. All the time the paint from the panel line is dry and I need to rub hard my Q-tip to remove it. So my question is after how much time I need to start the cleaning of the panel line? Usually I'm waiting 10 min but the paint is so dry
Well if you're using Tamiya Panel liquid on *unpainted* parts then it really doesn't matter how long you wait because you don't need to worry about accidentally washing off any paint. However if you have *painted* the parts before the panel liquid, then you will need to: 1) make sure you're not going to use a liquid that will wash off the paint. 2) Wash is quickly before it sets 3) Don't rub too long and remove the paint.
Chanman 001 OK I know why most of the time I Ça the remove the paint to have a clean panel lining, it's because I used a thinner for ACRILIC Paint. Rofl but thanks for the advice and the steps!

Hi there! I personally do not. I choose not to. I don't know if lighter fluid is cheaper than paint thinner or not but if it isn't a lot cheaper I'd suggest using thinner. Please read the past comments, I'm sure other viewers had shared comments on this topic. 😊
I have not noticed a change in color in my blue moulded plastic. What I have noticed is if I use too much thinner the plastic looks matte, not as shiny.
wondering is there any harm in using X20A instead of X20 to clean off the tamiya panel liner? appears i ordered X20-A and upon looking further X20 is just unoptainium were i live for some reason.
@@TheChanman001 good to know, had to pick it up because there's no X20 in my country for unknown reasons unfortunatly it does nothing for the tamiya panel liner :( gotta wait a week for the X20 to show up from 3 country's over :(
Either unpainted or Acrylic. Since the panel lining liquid is enamel based it it prevents the paint from coming off when I clean the excess panel liquid.

Ive been using the tamiya liner for the past 3 kits I have. I suddenly got paranoid though, is it really ok for me to have been using this without a respirator mask? Because the smell is quite strong.
Honestly wear a mask, they're more accessible now a days. I use industrial one like builders use for painting house or cars. Do it outside or near open window are other suggestions I make.
Hi, just a question. I've the same black panel line tamiya product, but I've painted my Vidar blue panels with TS50 spray, and I tried to use enamel over painted panel and color go away, how can I clean the panels after using this Tamiya Accent? My pain is see the color going away.
Hi Mike, I have the same problem when I make a mistake with panel line marker, and with too much Tamiya liquid. To be honest I am still working on the same problem. I have been experimenting by diluting the alcohol with water, I have also tried smaller amount of alcohol as well. Once I figured out a good solution, I'll let you know in another reply. Sorry I can give you a better answer...

Oh sorry for misunderstanding your question. Yes, you can use the Tamiya panel lining liquid after the TS50 spray. I mostly use TS paint, sometimes I use the panel lining liquid a few hours after painting with no problems so far. As for using Enamel paints on top of the TS50, I have not tried... For example if I used TS50 blue paint, but I also needed to have some black paint too, I would mask the ts50 and then use another TS black paint on top. Can I suggest you cut the Gunpla Tree and use the ts50 on that, after it dries apply your enamel paint to see if the Enamel damages the TS50 paint. That might be your best and safest way to test without, risk to Vidar!
Chanman 001 Thanks, I don't need to apply an enamel paint. Just worried about enamel to remove panel line excess. I was able to remove ts50 with enamel after two hours of painting with ts50. That's my pain :D so after days is safe enamel after panel line to remove excess?
I have a question. Is it necessary to put top coat first before applying any panel line? I heard tamiya panel line destroys the plastic. Also can you apply gundam marker even without applying top coat?
You can, I have not had issues, I suggest reading past comments, lots of discussions and then you can decide afterwards. It's up to your own comfort level. I never worry about it.
Hey man, do you mind a question? I'm using spray cans to custom or paint some pieces, but then how do I pannel line them? I hae been using the Accent Color and the markers too, but I feel like if I do that I will damage the paint itself and that would be a shame. Is there a way to pannel line such as this with a painted piece? so that then I can wipe out the extra without destroying the model. Maybe I need to applyy something else to the paint, or maybe is it that the enamel washes out the Tamiya spray cans for plastic? THANKS.
Hey there, you'll need to know what kind of paint you're using. Acrylic or Enamel. I use the Tamiya aerosols which are mostly acrylic. Then I use the panel line that is enamel. The key is this, acrylic thinner cannot wash off enamel, and vice versa.
@@TheChanman001 I use Tamiya for plastics spray cans. I guess they're acrylic? If so then I could panel line with the Accent Color I think. People tell me to put a simple gloss coat before pannel lining it, and after all, the Top Coat I have from Mr Hobby. Thank you!
Whoa whoa heads up!!!! I just used Tamiya *enamel* thinner but it washed off my Acrylic paint... It looks like their thinner is not PURE enamel thinner. Please be advised. I normally use Humbrol enamel thinner, no problem.
I agree Tamiya bottle looks better and It looks cleaner. but I heard that sometimes Tamiya Panel line accent can destory GUNPLA plastic for chemical reason. Haven't you had a problem like that ?

I noticed that on my tamiya panel line accent color, its really difficult to remove the excess ink even with the tamiya x20a thinner. I need to rub it extremely hard for minutes to even remove little ink. Im not drenching up the plastic with the ink but applies evenly like how you do in your video. Any tips why its happening to me only??
Tamiya X20A is an acrylic thinner. The panel lining liquid is enamel based. If you use an enamel thinner it should come right of with a stroke or two of the q-tip. Careful not to soak too much onto the swab! Hope this answer helps! I believe this might be the reason. Please let me know if it worked. I can experiment for you if it didn't.
My guess will be the same cause it just the liquid inside the pen. But you can't see how much is actually inside. Which is why either Tamiya bottle or try Creos 0.03mm pencil. I have a video about the pencil and how it compare to panel liquid.

Hi, I don't paint all my kits and I have used the Tamiya panel liquid on all my kits since 2015. None of them had any damage or melting. My bottles have not given me any problems. I have 2 bottles of black, 1 grey, 1 brown. I've used all 3 in different kits. So far so good.
I use it on bare plastic almost all the time. It has only happened to me once in 4 years. And the one instance I accidentally applied WAY too much. Luckily it was repaired easily. I appreciate the comment, and I get asked this question a lot. I can only share and respond based on my personal experience. So far over 40 kits built, hundreds of uses 1 accident, I think it's pretty safe! Maybe a bit of luck? Thx again!
I don't, but there are some builders who swear you must. I'd like to suggest you go back and read previous comments and questions. You'll see a lot of personal opinions from other builders. That might help you decide which option works better for you. But for me I don't coat before using the panel lining liquid.

The funny thing about English is there is American English and Rest if the world English! So it really depends on the speaker and where they're educated. Same goes for spelling. USA spells Color vs Canada spells it Colour. Not trying to say who's right or wrong, but hoping to expand perspective!

I've heard Australians and British sounding Gundam video reviews say Dee-Kals and I've heard American English sounding guys say both deck-els and dee-kals. I actually am very fascinated with different dictions of English spoken around the globe and was just wondering where geographically it came from as I was curious.
Jio Ragragio I'm in Van, BC, there are a few hobby stores that sell Gunpla. All of them sell Gundam Markers, Tamiya paints and accessories. 1 of my local stores even sell Mr. HOBBY stuff. As your local hobby store they should definitely be able to help you get the Tamiya stuff easy. Where are you in Canada?
Why black panel line on white plastic... Also what is the pros and cons on buying a panel line accent color (preferably gray and black) if i have a tamiya panel line pen (black)... The one thing k want from the panel line accent color is the paint flowing into the panel line without much effort... Also can i use the accent color on a airconditioned room? Cause u mentioned the strong smell (im just gonna wear a surgical mask) and will the smell stay in the room? For like 1-2 hours? Kind of a novice builder here hehe Thnx for the reply ^^
Hi I've tried 3 colors of panel line accent. Black stands out the most, then it was brown, grey didn't really stand out for me. I think it comes down to your own preference. The grey color is very subtle and can have a different effect on certain kits. As for accent color vs panel line pen, the liquid covers less surface area. The pen it is wider. Both are very important in stylizing your kit, both are great! On an unpainted kit the panel line liquid is very smooth flowing, it spreads quickly as you see in the video. However if you've painted the kit the liquid doesn't flow as smooth as unpainted. Lastly using panel liquid in an air conditioned room should be OK because the bottles are small, and you don't use a lot, unlike a spray can, so if you have a mask and a fan to blow the air, the smell won't last. The fan can blow away the smell in a few minutes. At least that's my experience. Let me know if you have anymore questions!
No I do not believe the panel line liquid affects the plastic. None of my kits have become brittle or shows any damage or melting. My panel lined kits have been built for over 2 years. They show no. Signs of damage.
Returning Gunpla Builder. It's been 10+ years. I've never panel lined and have a couple of questions after being fearmongered by others. Tons of back and forth from others that I absolutely need to make sure I use a top coat when using the Tamiya Panel Line Accent or even panel lining period. I've spent MANY hours trying to get a clear answer as to what is best for my situation. I just want to use the Tamiya Panel Line Accent to do my paneling. Is it okay to just panel line over bare plastic if I'm sparingly and good at cleanup? Or should I invest in some top coat to protect the plastic. I've heard people saying I should use a Lacquer top coat and to avoid using a matte finish because it "ruins" the panels and the liner isn't able to adhere properly afterwards. Also still unsure about the order of everything. Tons of misinformation everywhere it seems. I highly doubt a small amount of the Panel Liner is going to destroy my kits... Sorry if you get this question a lot, it's quite late here. I'm at my wits end with everyone's Elitism. **Edit** Thanks in advance even if you're not able to help.
Hey no problem! Ok I think I've built 200 or more kits, so that's thousands of individual plastic pieces. It's only happened once where the liquid cracked the plastic. So that's 1 out of 1000+? I'm comfy with it. However, it's worth buying Matte spray for the finish. You can buy plastic matte spray at Michael's for better value. Large spray can for $10? Lastly I've recently started using a mechanical lead pencil. Check out my video. You get great results no danger of cracks and fumes.
@@TheChanman001 Picking up some Clear Matte Lacquer, the Creos Mechanical Pencil Liner and some masking tape. Just wondering should I do decals first, then coat and finally panel lining with the pencil? Or use the spray as a finish over panel lining and decals. Kinda iffy with the order…
Not for enamel based paints. I've had some success with acrylic based paints. I recommend you try by painting on the useless sprue and then testing on that instead of the actual kit or piece of kit.
I've never had that happen on any of my kits thus far. I use it on all my kits. Over 3 years and no damage to the new or the old kits. I suspect that reason ppl comment on their cracking is a combination of a bad batch of plastic combined with bad batch of fluid? Know what I mean? Just unlucky...
I just recently received a message from another subscriber. He told me that he experienced melting plastic recently but he knew it was from excess liquid. It pooled and he ignored it. Then over a few minutes he saw the plastic warped only where it pooled.
I have not used instant glue myself. The key to glue is to have it "lightly" melt the plastic and truly seal/weld the pieces together. A good way to test is to use the outer sprue tree. Cut it into 2 pieces and then glue it with instant glue to see if it melts the plastic. You can tell if it oozes out when to press the pieces together. Hope this helps!
I have been reading that enamel paint like the Tamiya ones can make gunpla brittle. Has anybody actually experienced this? There is even a warning on the bottle that states that it can make some plastics brittle.
Out of all the years and all the kits, I've only experienced it once. And I know what caused it. It was TOO MUCH used. It wasn't paint either it was the panel lining liquid a huge drop landed on a rifle and sat on it for a long time... It was too late when I noticed it. That was the 1and only time my kit was damaged.
Yeah mine is small pen type panel lining.yup for me is difficult because when you make a line sometime the ink doesn't want go to line and and must delete by eraser,and when you delete by eraser sometime pane line disapear and waste time.meanwhile when using tamiya panel line it so easy and perfect thicknes of ink and no waste time.
Nizal Muhammad Well it doesn't matter if you mess up. Just wait like 2-5 minutes after messing up and erase using an eraser's flat side. That way it doesn't reach the etched plastic.

I've been using the fine tip Gundam marker, but after this video I'm definitely switching to the Tamiya liner. The way it basically filled the panels on its own was like watching sorcery lol.

@@cyandist that method is usually for markers and i never saw someone use finger to rub off the excess ink of the Tamiya panel line.
theres also the pour type markers which work about the same as tamiya
Just pointing out that the GM301 200 model is black in color and they are really deep and thick. I would recommend the GM302 which is grey that blends really nice with the white armor piece for anyone wanting to try out the 200 model gundam markers.
I've been panel lining with felt tip pens for years on models. Gunpla marker makes felt tips in grey and black, I use the grey for white parts and the black on everything else. They really do work fine, I tried to use the Tamiya brushes but I had already become so accustomed to felt pens that it wasn't that big a difference. The brushes made a bigger mess that had to be cleaned up whereas the felts tips leave hardly any cleanup. In the end it really does come down to personal preference because both can be applied with the same quality and you're not gaining or losing hardly anything by choosing one over the other.

Is it true that Tamiya causes the plastic to become brittle? I bought a gm13 mecha gray marker for panel lining but I'm worried that it might look bad compared to panel lines filled using Tamiya. However, I'm not sure if I should use the latter because I've read that using it without topcoating the plastic will make the plastic brittle
Hey there! From my personal experience, I'm not concerned with Tamiya panel liquid making the plastic brittle. I've built over 200 kits of all grades. Mathatically that's thousands of individual pieces or plastic parts. I've only experienced that brittleness issue once. In that instance I actually applied WAY TO MUCH liquid so that's on me not the liquid. Alternatively if you have not seen my video yet, I found the best panel lining tool. 0.03mm lead pencil. Check it out see what you think?
@@TheChanman001 Graphite panel lines? That's interesting, I'm going to have to look into that because graphite would be completely unbothered by enamels and topcoats. I have never experienced brittle plastic with Tamiya, but I haven't used it much either.
It works best after you top coat as demonstrated in the video but great results and easy clean up!

Very thin point q-tips are good if you want to do multi-layer paint chipping: let say you have a paint layer that represents bare metal, then you seal it with the gloss clear, then paint layer that is "primer" (do not seal with gloss but paint should be either gloss or semi-gloss) and then another layer of actual body color. Dab a q-tip into something that can eat through paint (but not easily) and start rubbing off the paint: som times just damaging only one layer of paint and sometimes hitting the gloss coat of the "bare metal". You can even complicate things more if you put a "rust" (few tones of the rust colors in a random pattern) layer between clear coat that is protecting "metal" and "primer" so you would get even "rust" "eating" the model.

@@TheChanman001 i am going to pick up the thinner of the same brand. I heard you can use lighter fluid or deluted rubbing alcohol as a substitute though.
I guess as long as you know what kind of paint you're using you'll be fine. Some companies thinner may say Enamel but it's not pure and will wash off even lacquer.

Its the sixth ive finished and normally i have always used the blue marker (gx-01 i believe) but i saw that in a video and wanted to try it.
Be careful on putting too much on unpainted/not top coated kits either. It could cause stress/ruin the plastic.

I watched this other clip that he used the thin marker for both some shading and line works using a tip and a erasor. But think I will try the Accent eventually.
I use a high polymer Eraser fir panel line clean up works good for the pens and brush Cleans both up perfectly
Dab the q-tip a few times in a tissue after putting alcohol. As a result, it lessens the smudge

I use tamiya dark grey for white color parts. Q-tips from Daiso store are 200 pcs for $1.50 with 2 different tips on each side. 👍
if you use the thicker felt tip point instead of the "fine liner" it will do the same thing as that Tamiya liner is doing. and the felt tip is so small it can still be used for most lining jobs normally.
The tamiya panel line fluid actually is as dark as the gundam marker if you shake it correctly before usage. There is also a dark gray version of the tamiya fluid i would recommend for white panels. The only thing scarring me are the warning labels on the fluid comaired to the pens they are quite toxic.

I have used the gundam marker 302 on a kit that i previously painted and topcoated with mr hobby premium matte topcoat, and when i wanted to remove the marker, it seems the topcoat somehow got removed with it because i managed to smear some of the paint underneath it. What can i use to properly remove the marker without affecting the topcoat? i used 90° alcohol because i only had that at the time.

I actually liked the smudge mark from the marker, kinda gives a damaged/blast mark on the parts.
I go down to a local bookstore for drawing markers 0.05 tip and they work pretty good plus its cheaper
Same some work well others not so much but i mainly habe used them for pannel lineing
Your normal pencil eraser works real good for clean up as well
I learnt fairly quickly that the panel line liquid can make the plastic brittle and even break. Would reccomend going a clear coat using mr hobby gloss or something similar before using.
true, i’ve been there. Bare plastic will eventually damage if ur using line liquid, need to coat first
This is actually a low percentage occurrence. I've used it on thousands of individual pieces and only once when I put way to much my accident that it happened. It was an easy fix. So if you think 1/2000 chance is too high coat everything. I don't coat before I use the liquid. In the end, do what you're most comfortable with. Gunpla is freedom!
I like both the gundam marker methods and tayima. I tried the liquid on 2 kits, however if too much is applied rip the plastic or if your tired and forget to clean up then rip the plastic too. Yeah...i learned thr hard way. Luckily for one only the sabers broke easy fix however for my red frame....the hand joint melted and a piece for the jets in the backpack melted due to me forgetting to clean it. I may stick to the gundam markers xP

Is the Tamiya x-20 compatible with the pour type gundam markers?
im using the gundam marker GM301 - TAMIYA PANEL LINE ACCENT COLOR is great...but its much better if you TOP COAT first...before you apply it...since it has thinner that makes plastic brittle and you will use X-20 thinner......(its in the bottle)
but the GM301works fine..especially if youre only building it out of the box with out any heavy painting...its like the tamiya panel line..its also runny...

A bit of an extra tip: Gloss coating the piece before panel lining helps the panel line was flow more evenly and freely.
Does it also help with the potential breakdown too? And is there a particular gloss you'd recommend for this?
@@palor1204 It can, though its kind of more related to the wash, I think. As per a gloss any hobby clear gloss. Tamiya makes a good spray on clear, and there are paint on versions as well. You don't NEED to do it, but it will make things move more smoothly and also protect the plastic, as sometimes plastic has been known to crack when exposed to certain chemicals.
it also protects the plastic and paint from enamel as the solvents in the enamel panel liner can cause plastics to crumble and break. I would never ever put enamel washes on bare plastic.
@@gundamfan2020 I put Tamiya panel line washes on bare plastic all the time and only had one minor break in a pilot figure once when I accidently saturated the thing. In general if you're just panel lining or putting on reasonable amounts its fine. Its when you let it really sit in liquid form for long periods that it can cause issues.
Yeah this is a heavily discussed topic. I've had multiple replies. I've used on bare plastic on estimated 80% of my kits. That equals hundreds of parts, only once did I have a crack from it, and it was my own fault for applying TOO MUCH in one drop. So I'm a builder who is very comfortable using it on bare plastic. Bottom line I always tell people who ask, do what you're most comfortable with.

Yes I've started applying a Matte Spray on all my kits. It gives them a cool appearance, almost a grainy look, and a smoother feel. Would you like to see a video comparing an un-coated kit vs a matte sprayed kit? Thanks for the comment!
That would be really helpful since I'm planning to buy one myself. Also, can you do a comparison between an industrial top coat vs a one for model kits? I can't actually find any top coat for model kits here, and the most popular choice is the Bosny clear gloss/matte since there's also no Krylon available in my country

I'm sorry what do you mean by panel wash? I use rubbing alcohol to wash off the panel lining liquid. As for the Tamiya Panel lining liquids I bought 1 off ebay, and the other from a local hobby store carried a lot of Tamiya stuff. I hope this answered your question, if not please let me know! :)
recently switched from gundam markers to the tamiya panel liner (X20 in the mail as my country / the neighboring one only sell X20-A which apparanetly does nothing >.>) quite a learning curve as to what works and what doesn't, picked of the kshatriya's binders and one of gundam wings sabers to try it out, amazing magic like for the saber, borderline useless for the binder :(
kinda really need to source some good cotton swabs as the one's i have are pretty loose so i keep erasing lines >.>
the gundam makers i just rubbed with a finger to thin them down a little though that also has many places were it doesn't really work
@@TheChanman001 found a good way to not use to much X20 is to shake the bottle take off the lid and rub the cottonswab on the lid, it'll make even the meaty somewhat soft cottonswabs useable (can't really find any hard/tight one's in the area and i've burned through atleast 150 on the MG unicorn full armor). though if you have to push to get a bit deeper it tends to easely go way to deep erasing your panel line though thats where the low amount of X20 tends to help as it takes a few swipes to erase it fully.
use a white pencil eraser to remove messed up gundam marker. no messy fluids needed.

I use Tamiya liquid panel line on my Tamiya painted kits, I have not had any problems with it washing/melting my paint or my kit. My thoughts are what type of paint are you using? Acrylic or Enamel? Is too much panel lining liquid being applied? What brand of panel liquid are you using? Next question you asked liquid or marker? My personal preference is still liquid it looks better. The thin marker looks like you drew the line with a marker. I hope this response helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Maybe I should do a 2018 video? 🤔
Chanman 001 I used Tamiya spray, I may have used too much like you suggested, first time I had tried panel lining. I just watched a ZakuAurillius video that went over order of painting operations, he ended up touching on 2 of the problems I experienced:
1) the liner didn't bleed well into the lines (thus my desire to use more).
2) using a clear top coat of a different paint base to help guard against mistakes & aid in the bleed/capulary.

How much thinner are you using on the swab to clean it up? I was using a Gundam marker eraser on a test kit and i end up wiping away the entire panel line away! So I feel like I’m using too much.

Depending on what I'm wiping off. In this case it's enamel thinner. If you're using Acrylic based paints then use acrylic thinner.

Is the fine-tip Blue gundam marker(GM01) actually black paint or is it dark blue?
dark blue. you would use it on panel lining a blue part, or at least that’s what i would do.
My fine tip GM01 200 is black. I just used it on a piece of paper. I also have GM02 200 which is gray. The marker cap indicates the color.
Nice video. Got to try the accent color. A while ago I spray a part with samurai spray paint and use gundam marker gm301 on the panel line. When I clean the excess using gundam marker eraser, the paint got damaged a bit. Any advice on that? Thanks.
Hmmmm.... Most likely the Samurai Spray Paint is Enamel based? That's why when you wash the gm301 with paint thinner the paint washes off as well. I have had that problem before. I only use the Gundam Markers on kits where I don't paint. If I am painting it with Tamiya paint I make sure to use the Accent Color because it doesn't make as big a mess when applying. Does this answer your question?

I watched some of the video about this two panel accents, they said to use the gray one on the white parts and black for the colored parts. What's your opinion ?
My advice is always go with what "you" love most. I experimented with some grey on white, my personal opinion is that there isn't enough contrast to make the panel lines and the design pop out. Why don't you try both and see what you like better. Bottom line Gunpla is freedom of expression! Do what you like and what you think looks great! There are too many haters in the world to please, so don't try... Please yourself, but I'm sure you'll also have plenty of supporters out there too! Please make a video of your own to show off your work!!! Have fun!!!

People online saying you need to use an enamel base coat under it to protect it and assist the capillary action?!? I’m painting both gundams and warhammer minis. The gundam marker might be smudging hard and more noticeable because you're using gmo1 or in otherwords black on white, try gm02/grey

Hey! Great video, I learnt some things in it but I encounter an issue with my panel line accent color. I don't know when I can clean up my panel line. All the time the paint from the panel line is dry and I need to rub hard my Q-tip to remove it. So my question is after how much time I need to start the cleaning of the panel line? Usually I'm waiting 10 min but the paint is so dry
Well if you're using Tamiya Panel liquid on *unpainted* parts then it really doesn't matter how long you wait because you don't need to worry about accidentally washing off any paint. However if you have *painted* the parts before the panel liquid, then you will need to: 1) make sure you're not going to use a liquid that will wash off the paint. 2) Wash is quickly before it sets 3) Don't rub too long and remove the paint.

Hi there! I personally do not. I choose not to. I don't know if lighter fluid is cheaper than paint thinner or not but if it isn't a lot cheaper I'd suggest using thinner. Please read the past comments, I'm sure other viewers had shared comments on this topic. 😊
what if the part is another color and not white? will the thinner worn that out as well?
I have not noticed a change in color in my blue moulded plastic. What I have noticed is if I use too much thinner the plastic looks matte, not as shiny.
How are these with with other paints and clear coats? Any negative reactions etc?
I've used them with mostly Tamiya and Mr.Hobby paints and top coats. No problem. I use a Humbrol thinner to clean off the excess, also no problem.

What kind of base coat paint was used? Lacquer? Or enamel/acrylic?
Either unpainted or Acrylic. Since the panel lining liquid is enamel based it it prevents the paint from coming off when I clean the excess panel liquid.

Ive been using the tamiya liner for the past 3 kits I have. I suddenly got paranoid though, is it really ok for me to have been using this without a respirator mask? Because the smell is quite strong.
Honestly wear a mask, they're more accessible now a days. I use industrial one like builders use for painting house or cars. Do it outside or near open window are other suggestions I make.
Hi, just a question. I've the same black panel line tamiya product, but I've painted my Vidar blue panels with TS50 spray, and I tried to use enamel over painted panel and color go away, how can I clean the panels after using this Tamiya Accent? My pain is see the color going away.
Hi Mike, I have the same problem when I make a mistake with panel line marker, and with too much Tamiya liquid. To be honest I am still working on the same problem. I have been experimenting by diluting the alcohol with water, I have also tried smaller amount of alcohol as well. Once I figured out a good solution, I'll let you know in another reply. Sorry I can give you a better answer...

Oh sorry for misunderstanding your question. Yes, you can use the Tamiya panel lining liquid after the TS50 spray. I mostly use TS paint, sometimes I use the panel lining liquid a few hours after painting with no problems so far. As for using Enamel paints on top of the TS50, I have not tried... For example if I used TS50 blue paint, but I also needed to have some black paint too, I would mask the ts50 and then use another TS black paint on top. Can I suggest you cut the Gunpla Tree and use the ts50 on that, after it dries apply your enamel paint to see if the Enamel damages the TS50 paint. That might be your best and safest way to test without, risk to Vidar!
Chanman 001 Thanks, I don't need to apply an enamel paint. Just worried about enamel to remove panel line excess. I was able to remove ts50 with enamel after two hours of painting with ts50. That's my pain :D so after days is safe enamel after panel line to remove excess?

You can, I have not had issues, I suggest reading past comments, lots of discussions and then you can decide afterwards. It's up to your own comfort level. I never worry about it.

Hey man, do you mind a question? I'm using spray cans to custom or paint some pieces, but then how do I pannel line them? I hae been using the Accent Color and the markers too, but I feel like if I do that I will damage the paint itself and that would be a shame. Is there a way to pannel line such as this with a painted piece? so that then I can wipe out the extra without destroying the model. Maybe I need to applyy something else to the paint, or maybe is it that the enamel washes out the Tamiya spray cans for plastic? THANKS.
Hey there, you'll need to know what kind of paint you're using. Acrylic or Enamel. I use the Tamiya aerosols which are mostly acrylic. Then I use the panel line that is enamel. The key is this, acrylic thinner cannot wash off enamel, and vice versa.
@@TheChanman001 I use Tamiya for plastics spray cans. I guess they're acrylic? If so then I could panel line with the Accent Color I think. People tell me to put a simple gloss coat before pannel lining it, and after all, the Top Coat I have from Mr Hobby. Thank you!
Whoa whoa heads up!!!! I just used Tamiya *enamel* thinner but it washed off my Acrylic paint... It looks like their thinner is not PURE enamel thinner. Please be advised. I normally use Humbrol enamel thinner, no problem.

I agree Tamiya bottle looks better and It looks cleaner. but I heard that sometimes Tamiya Panel line accent can destory GUNPLA plastic for chemical reason. Haven't you had a problem like that ?
Hi Nimbus, I've used the Tamiya Panel lining liquid for over a year now, and none of my Gunpla has shown signs of damage or melting.

I noticed that on my tamiya panel line accent color, its really difficult to remove the excess ink even with the tamiya x20a thinner. I need to rub it extremely hard for minutes to even remove little ink. Im not drenching up the plastic with the ink but applies evenly like how you do in your video. Any tips why its happening to me only??
Tamiya X20A is an acrylic thinner. The panel lining liquid is enamel based. If you use an enamel thinner it should come right of with a stroke or two of the q-tip. Careful not to soak too much onto the swab! Hope this answer helps! I believe this might be the reason. Please let me know if it worked. I can experiment for you if it didn't.

It depends on what kind of liner. If it's enamel based liner I use Humbrol enamel thinner. If it's acrylic based then I use Tamiya thinner.
The brand can vary. Just be able to determine if it's enamel or acrylic.
does acetone free nail polish remover works too for the markers?

My guess will be the same cause it just the liquid inside the pen. But you can't see how much is actually inside. Which is why either Tamiya bottle or try Creos 0.03mm pencil. I have a video about the pencil and how it compare to panel liquid.

Hi, I don't paint all my kits and I have used the Tamiya panel liquid on all my kits since 2015. None of them had any damage or melting. My bottles have not given me any problems. I have 2 bottles of black, 1 grey, 1 brown. I've used all 3 in different kits. So far so good.

For the pour type make sure u never use it on bare abs plastic.
It will literally crack the part. Ive witnessed it happen alot of times.
I use it on bare plastic almost all the time. It has only happened to me once in 4 years. And the one instance I accidentally applied WAY too much. Luckily it was repaired easily. I appreciate the comment, and I get asked this question a lot. I can only share and respond based on my personal experience. So far over 40 kits built, hundreds of uses 1 accident, I think it's pretty safe! Maybe a bit of luck? Thx again!

I don't, but there are some builders who swear you must. I'd like to suggest you go back and read previous comments and questions. You'll see a lot of personal opinions from other builders. That might help you decide which option works better for you. But for me I don't coat before using the panel lining liquid.

I've been watching alot of these kinds of vids lately and I have to ask, where does saying decals like "deck-els" come from? I've only ever heard them said like "Dee-Kals"
The funny thing about English is there is American English and Rest if the world English! So it really depends on the speaker and where they're educated. Same goes for spelling. USA spells Color vs Canada spells it Colour. Not trying to say who's right or wrong, but hoping to expand perspective!

I've heard Australians and British sounding Gundam video reviews say Dee-Kals and I've heard American English sounding guys say both deck-els and dee-kals. I actually am very fascinated with different dictions of English spoken around the globe and was just wondering where geographically it came from as I was curious.

Jio Ragragio I'm in Van, BC, there are a few hobby stores that sell Gunpla. All of them sell Gundam Markers, Tamiya paints and accessories. 1 of my local stores even sell Mr. HOBBY stuff. As your local hobby store they should definitely be able to help you get the Tamiya stuff easy. Where are you in Canada?

Also what is the pros and cons on buying a panel line accent color (preferably gray and black) if i have a tamiya panel line pen (black)... The one thing k want from the panel line accent color is the paint flowing into the panel line without much effort... Also can i use the accent color on a airconditioned room? Cause u mentioned the strong smell (im just gonna wear a surgical mask) and will the smell stay in the room? For like 1-2 hours? Kind of a novice builder here hehe

Hi I've tried 3 colors of panel line accent. Black stands out the most, then it was brown, grey didn't really stand out for me. I think it comes down to your own preference. The grey color is very subtle and can have a different effect on certain kits. As for accent color vs panel line pen, the liquid covers less surface area. The pen it is wider. Both are very important in stylizing your kit, both are great! On an unpainted kit the panel line liquid is very smooth flowing, it spreads quickly as you see in the video. However if you've painted the kit the liquid doesn't flow as smooth as unpainted. Lastly using panel liquid in an air conditioned room should be OK because the bottles are small, and you don't use a lot, unlike a spray can, so if you have a mask and a fan to blow the air, the smell won't last. The fan can blow away the smell in a few minutes. At least that's my experience. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

No I do not believe the panel line liquid affects the plastic. None of my kits have become brittle or shows any damage or melting. My panel lined kits have been built for over 2 years. They show no. Signs of damage.
Returning Gunpla Builder. It's been 10+ years. I've never panel lined and have a couple of questions after being fearmongered by others. Tons of back and forth from others that I absolutely need to make sure I use a top coat when using the Tamiya Panel Line Accent or even panel lining period. I've spent MANY hours trying to get a clear answer as to what is best for my situation. I just want to use the Tamiya Panel Line Accent to do my paneling. Is it okay to just panel line over bare plastic if I'm sparingly and good at cleanup? Or should I invest in some top coat to protect the plastic. I've heard people saying I should use a Lacquer top coat and to avoid using a matte finish because it "ruins" the panels and the liner isn't able to adhere properly afterwards. Also still unsure about the order of everything. Tons of misinformation everywhere it seems. I highly doubt a small amount of the Panel Liner is going to destroy my kits... Sorry if you get this question a lot, it's quite late here. I'm at my wits end with everyone's Elitism.

Hey no problem! Ok I think I've built 200 or more kits, so that's thousands of individual plastic pieces. It's only happened once where the liquid cracked the plastic. So that's 1 out of 1000+? I'm comfy with it. However, it's worth buying Matte spray for the finish. You can buy plastic matte spray at Michael's for better value. Large spray can for $10? Lastly I've recently started using a mechanical lead pencil. Check out my video. You get great results no danger of cracks and fumes.
@@TheChanman001 Picking up some Clear Matte Lacquer, the Creos Mechanical Pencil Liner and some masking tape. Just wondering should I do decals first, then coat and finally panel lining with the pencil? Or use the spray as a finish over panel lining and decals. Kinda iffy with the order…
First Matte Spray, then Pencil, then decals, finally another coat of matte spray to lock it all down.

Not for enamel based paints. I've had some success with acrylic based paints. I recommend you try by painting on the useless sprue and then testing on that instead of the actual kit or piece of kit.
Hi, i’ve just bought this tamiya accent color. Is it really give a crack if i put it too much on my gunpla?
I've never had that happen on any of my kits thus far. I use it on all my kits. Over 3 years and no damage to the new or the old kits. I suspect that reason ppl comment on their cracking is a combination of a bad batch of plastic combined with bad batch of fluid? Know what I mean? Just unlucky...

I just recently received a message from another subscriber. He told me that he experienced melting plastic recently but he knew it was from excess liquid. It pooled and he ignored it. Then over a few minutes he saw the plastic warped only where it pooled.

seam line removal can i use instant glue
I have not used instant glue myself. The key to glue is to have it "lightly" melt the plastic and truly seal/weld the pieces together. A good way to test is to use the outer sprue tree. Cut it into 2 pieces and then glue it with instant glue to see if it melts the plastic. You can tell if it oozes out when to press the pieces together. Hope this helps!
I have been reading that enamel paint like the Tamiya ones can make gunpla brittle. Has anybody actually experienced this? There is even a warning on the bottle that states that it can make some plastics brittle.
Out of all the years and all the kits, I've only experienced it once. And I know what caused it. It was TOO MUCH used. It wasn't paint either it was the panel lining liquid a huge drop landed on a rifle and sat on it for a long time... It was too late when I noticed it. That was the 1and only time my kit was damaged.

Yeah mine is small pen type panel lining.yup for me is difficult because when you make a line sometime the ink doesn't want go to line and and must delete by eraser,and when you delete by eraser sometime pane line disapear and waste time.meanwhile when using tamiya panel line it so easy and perfect thicknes of ink and no waste time.

Nizal Muhammad Well it doesn't matter if you mess up. Just wait like 2-5 minutes after messing up and erase using an eraser's flat side. That way it doesn't reach the etched plastic.
