  • Melbourne and Fremantle forward Jeff Farmer got dubbed 'Wizard' for his propensity to conjure the utterly miraculous. Plenty of highlights in the livewire's 483-goal, 249-game career in the AFL.

Classic... One of the best small forwards to ever play the game in my opinion!!

Betts is the only guy who could rival Farmer in the modern era, I think.

I was at that game where he took that screamer (Melbourne vs. Richmond, round 22 1998 at the MCG) that ended up being deservedly ranked as the 3rd best mark of the 20th Century, and gee did it make an impression on the whole crowd and other players in the match! The main 'live' camera angle of it doesn't do it justice as to how high he really got. I was sitting directly behind the Melbourne goals (Punt Road end) in the 2nd tier and not only were we all instantly saying that it was goal of the year but even when he then missed the shot on goal immediately afterwards most of the grandstand (including Richmond supporters) genuinely applauded him after the shot on goal (and not sarcastically either). I then had the fortune of meeting him a year later through the AFL schools program and when I asked him about that mark he said that in the moment he knew that he was really high off the ground but didn't realise exactly how high until he saw in a replay afterwards that his foot was on the back of Garry Lyon's shoulders while still standing upright, but that the calf twinge "when I landed should have been a sign".
For the rest of that match there were 3+ Richmond players attending pretty much every other contest involving Jeff Farmer, even if it was just him and not involving other Melbourne players.
I have never been an avid sports fan, but gee was I glad that we went to that particular game just to see that mark live, particularly as that was the only game of that season that I attended (due to performing in musicals pretty much every weekend from May to December, largely due to the 1998 Melbourne prof. production of Les Misérables).
While it was a shame he then left the Dees for Fremantle a few years later he is still remembered fondly by Melbourne fans, and for way more than just that mark. A truly amazing player (mostly for his time at Melbourne) who during his peak years could turn a contest and a game on its head in the blink of an eye and being the most explosive and most damaging forward pocket player to play for Melbourne in the 'modern' AFL era.

Been watching AFL football since the early 90's, and Jeff Farmers season in 2000 is the best that I've seen from a small forward

Milne never gets the respect he deserves imo best small forward of that entire era and still has more goals at Docklands than any other player.

The nine goals from about half way through the third quarter after being benched late in the second having barely touched it was an incredible day at the footy. The send off the Collingwood supporters gave him when he was dragged came back to haunt them. After he kicked his ninth he took a huge hanger and lined up for number 10. Finished with 9.1. And we all booed him off.
